I just tumbled onto the greatest Tumblr ever, My Husband's Stupid Record Collection:

Yeah, that was making the rounds here at FMU. Haven't had a chance to check it out myself, though.

Evening, @mariano. Yeah, it's brand new. Produced by Amy Denio.

Ooh, thanks, PSS!

great start to the show! killer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm

It's not some one-dimensional put-down blog; she actually listens to the stuff and tries to figure it out, and even likes some of it.

Hey, @jeff. Thanks.

Missed having this show last week, but you can't beat Hoof And Mouth for outrageous weirdness, and of course it was fun spotting you in the band, Dave.

pss, I love hearing how different players sound on the same tubs with the same mic setup. Evan and Dennis are such natural listener/players -- they never take their eyes off the singer (except during gratuitous fills). DM is a natural bassist (according to him).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I'm really enjoying that tumblr.
  10:23pm
JakeGould:

Is “My Husband's Stupid Record Collection” ironic?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
pacific standard simon:

@Jake - I think the root of the title is in her admission that she's had to help move all those records 5 times in 9 years (!!!). IRONY.

@Droll - you think about music in an interesting way.
Avatar 10:29pm
Dave Mandl:

@droll: I don't know about "natural," but I am a bassist, true.
Avatar 10:29pm
Droll:

pss, I'll take that as the pejorative as which it was intended. Thank you for noticing!

My wife frequently refers to my stuff as "those goddam comic books" or "those stupid cassettes", but she'll defend to the death my right to have the things I really want. When I moved up here, I dumped 2/3 of my record collection because I haven't owned a working turntable in years.

How could you not like the girl who gave us the phrase, "Old school hipster music?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
pacific standard simon:

It's easy to be nice to smart, charming kids. I wouldn't necessarily want to listen to her radio show, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
pacific standard simon:

Jeez, that sounds patronizing. Well, fuck it.
Avatar 10:39pm
Dave Mandl:

Well, if you like this show, good chance you wouldn't like hers (musically).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
mariano:

I learn so much on every show. Never heard DeGennaro before, this is beautiful.
  10:44pm
P-90:

Val could have a mini "show-within-a-show" as an occasional part of World of Echo. Ten minutes to play whatever she thinks the ancient wizened hipsters should get turned on to. With spoken introductions written by and starring Val.
  10:45pm
P-90:

Gruppenfuhrer Ken would love it
Avatar 10:45pm
Dave Mandl:

@mariano: Funny thing is, I included a track of his on my Marathon premium. His stuff is really hard to find. I've just got a few things in digital form that I think were on cassette originally.
Avatar 10:45pm
Dave Mandl:

@P-90: Ha. She'd probably love that. The main problem is that it's too late on a school night.
  10:47pm
JakeGould:

Well, I like the title “My Husband's Stupid Record Collection” , but the content is just blah, blah, blah, blah. If she did one paragraph per record I would like it. Now? It just seems like some NPR joke.
  10:49pm
Carmichael:

Hi Dave, eating a gift of jalapeño pistachios whilst listening. Wonderful set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm

Talk to Doug Schulkind -- maybe Val could do something from home, possibly as a part of one of Doug's shows (or Bodega Pop).
  10:49pm
P-90:

@Dave: I was thinking you would produce her segments in advance. See? there's no way out...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Andrew Waterloo:

That Matthew DeGennaro is available at www.softabuse.com and they're listing another one as coming soon.
  10:51pm
JakeGould:

Well, the think is the complaining about schlepping media from place to place is one thing. Decent concept. But her extremely Brooklyn hipster self-conscious self-deprecation is nauseating. “This project was my idea, inspired by maybe one too many glasses of wine last weekend, when I was in charge of changing the music.” Good grief!
  10:51pm
P-90:

@ Andrew W.: thanks for the link, real curious about him now
  10:52pm
ccrides:

Bonus tracks are nice!!!...:)O(:..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Actually if you go through the catalogue they have 2 CDs available as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
pacific standard simon:

@Jake - my reaction is just the opposite. I like that she gets into the details of her reactions to what she's hearing. Too many posters on Tumblr spend too little time thinking before posting, for my taste. Regarding your second comment, well, that's real life!
  10:57pm
JakeGould:

Well, I disagree. I find Tumblr to be perfect for short combos of images & test. Like Twitter & Flickr combined. But it is so, so, so, so self-aware… And then I found this… “Her husband is Alex Goodman from On the Media.” Arrrgh! A media aware person who works in the media is now commenting on the media, in the media on the web. Sorry, but… No.

@Carmichael: Thanks. And welcome, Jake, Andrew, ccrides,

ccrides:

Overtones of 'Georgie Girl' kept running through my mind..?..hehehe
  11:00pm
JakeGould:

There’s basically a “learned helplessness” in the whole thing I cannot swallow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Andrew Waterloo:

A lot of those metafilter comments are stuck on the fact that she's a woman instead of normal person among record collectors.
Avatar 11:01pm
Dave Mandl:

@Andrew: Thanks. Yeah, the LP is pretty available, but I think some of the other things I have by DeGennaro were cassette-only. I could be wrong.
  11:02pm
JakeGould:

Well, we have to agree to disagree. Because I used to have a decent sized record & CD collection… Then when MP3s became a thing, I sold them off… Sorry… But it saves my back, space & money… Money which I can then toss back to places WFMU!
Avatar 11:03pm
Droll:

[back from dinner break]
Methinks yinz need to put "Social Media" back on the shelf it belongs -- value what editors do.

And as far as DJ Val, I'd listen to her show before anything on ClearChannel/Viacom.

DM, So, do you eventually go back to a 3 hour show like Jonsey gets his hour back?
Avatar 11:05pm
Dave Mandl:

@Droll: No idea. The change to the Sunday grid (not just me) may be permanent, but we'll find out when the next schedule is announced--in May, I think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
pacific standard simon:

Apparently, most of those Metafilter commenters have never been in a relationship with someone who doesn't share their musical involvement.

@Jake - Never heard of "On The Media", but I'll go Google it later.
Avatar 11:05pm
Dave Mandl:

I appreciate it, though!
  11:08pm
JakeGould:

Her husband shows up in the MetaFilter thread and says, “We started this thing two weeks ago with no goal other than to get to know each other better.” Nothing says you will get to know each other better than talking about each other in 3rd person via a Tumblr blog!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Ike:

Sometimes "On the Media" is an excellent show, much better & with more critical thinking than a lot of NPR, and sometimes it's basically the same media criticism offered by the Daily Show & the Colbert Report but without humor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Andrew Waterloo:

PSS, Apparently most of the Metafilter commenters have never had a large record collection either. There's probably a good chunk of music that they do listen to together.
Avatar 11:11pm
Droll:

. o O ( If only these 15-minute slots of fame were handed out more fairly... )
  11:13pm
JakeGould:

Okay, since I should like a negative nelly I will say this: If they did their own podcast or radio show where they spend 30 minutes picking & album and then both critiquing it in real-time… Okay… That is something… But as a blog, I was scrolling & saying to myself, “Is there going to be a picture of her with a glass of wine & an album cover?” BINGO! YES!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
pacific standard simon:

Whoah, Jake, take it easy! I think the 'getting to know each other better' part is in the 'listening together and talking' part, not the 'writing a cute blog post' part.

I wonder if you guys would like a tumblr of Val going through her dad's LPs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm

Probably wouldn't be any irony there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
pacific standard simon:

"Crap!" "Ugh!" "No way!" "I'm not listening to this!" "Dad, you ARE an old-school hipster."
  11:24pm
JakeGould:

The “On the Media” blog has an entry on her blog and they even say “her review of some terrible Anthrax record”… That is just hipster snottiness right there. www.onthemedia.org...
Avatar 11:24pm
Droll:

12539, I think she's already expressed her opinion about "Old school hipster music": she probably couldn't muster a Tweet to review the entire FMU record library... Which is precisely why her voice is so important!

“My wife's limited musical interest sometimes drives me nuts…” All’s I gotta say is: I don’t care about anyone else’s personal musical taste. And my only pet peeve is I cannot understand folks who don’t understand that 99.9% of people out there will not agree with anyone else’s taste on anything.
