OK Tony. It's 9 o'clock and I want to rock!

Hey Carmichael! Rocking has commenced.

This music really a grease with me!
Avatar 12:07pm

Today's show is strictly boot city, so you'll get plenty of that hiss I promised you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm

"Atlanta Sports Arena" huh...I love how things were just what they were back then. No corporate sponshorships.

Hola, Doug! Or should I say greasings....

The oily band gets the turn.

So, I guess this will be blindingly obvious to most of you, but: Hampton Grease Band are the band in the top photograph; Pearls Before Swine are below.

Hey fleep, you oily bird!

Spectacled fellow looks like he could be Woody Allen's freaky brother.
Avatar 12:15pm

Greets, still b/p! The spectacled one is Tom Rapp, leader of PBS.

obligatory Peter Gunn theme...every band MUST COVER
Avatar 12:18pm
northguineahills:

Isn't Tom Rapp a practicing attorney?
Avatar 12:20pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, NGH! He is indeed. Perhaps his ads read: Don't take the rap -- get Rapp.
Avatar 12:23pm
Carmichael:

I stole my line from Elton John. He is 97 years old today.
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, general question: I have loads of these kinds of concert tapes, but haven't played too many of them on Tape Hiss because of sound quality and tape speed issues. Should I play more of this kind of stuff -- or mostly stick to "official" releases? What say you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Gary:

Good Lord, Tony ... seriously? You should totally play them. This is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
holland oats:

as they said in the arrowsmith video, "let's bootleg!"
Avatar 12:25pm
northguineahills:

You should play all of the above, Tony.
Avatar 12:31pm

You can always let 'em roll and see if they get too draggy-whacked and then bail, or insta-poll the assembled connoisseurs and peanut gallery appraisers-without-portfolio.

Uncle Michael:

It's been so long since I've heard this that I'd forgotten it existed!
Avatar 12:33pm
Tony Coulter:

True. Need to get me a tape deck with pitch control -- that would help. Guess I will wear my boots more often.
Avatar 12:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, Uncle Michael!

(That "true" was aimed at still b/p)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Uncle Michael:

Hey, ho!

You could capture the tape to digital and adjust the speed in software?
Avatar 12:37pm
still b/p:

I thought about suggesting that but worried that bottles, rocks and scorn would be thrown at me. I'm assuming that original media is purposefully and philosophically The Way for the program.
  12:37pm
Dean:

The vibe here is a little bit Pere Ubu, a little bit Nihilist Spasm Band. What are "sound quality and tape speed issues"? Never heard of 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Uncle Michael:

Eh. It's a 128k mp3 right now, either way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Rich in Washington:

I too want a pitch-controlled tape deck. I am surprised that so few have it.
Software is difficult, as it's sometimes hit or miss, where application is concerned. If you could adjust pitch on the fly, it would be easier.
That's me using Audacity, though.
I do know that you can do it while capturing with Audio Hijack but it's helpful to know what the deviation is, pitchwise, beforehand.
Avatar 12:39pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Uncle Michael & still b/p: You can do it that way, yes, fer sure -- but it's a lot more laborious than twiddling away until everything sounds right. I vote pitch control.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
DavID Thomas:

I think most tape decks have a small trim pot on the circuit board but you'd be foolish to mess with it, unless your deck was slow/fast on everything.

btw: excellent mix for today's show. Been a huge fan of both for ages. Pearls Before Swine was my gateway into the entire musical underground, at about age ten. . . .

One odd thing I discovered preparing for this show is that there seem to be very few photos of PBS out there -- judging from google images, anyhow.

Never got to see Hampton Grease (I was 4 yrs old when this show took place) but did catch Glenn Phillips at progday 2005. Not the same of course, but groovy...
Avatar 1:10pm

I caught Hampton's Aquarium Rescue Unit in the late '90s/early 2000s. There was definitely more than a bit of Grease Band flavor. 'Twas great.

I have a lunch date now, but thank you so much for sharing that great HGB bootleg, Tony.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm

Again, throwing in my vote for more live bootlegs in the future ... & see you around!

Brian in UK:

Sounds as mellow as an early Seventies British audience at say the Roundhouse.
Avatar 1:32pm

@ Gary: Your vote has been counted. I for one find live song intros entertaining. Tom Rapp's are pretty freeform.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm

Funny how Rapp is obviously influenced by Dylan -- and yet is so unlike Dylan.
Avatar 🥁 2:11pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Agreed TC. Funny though - despite all the comparisons, I completely dig Rapp but have never had the slightest taste for Dylan, in any of his incarnations.
Avatar 2:12pm
Tony Coulter:

Same here, actually. I like 2 or 3 Dylan songs, at best.
Avatar 2:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Tho Dave Mandl tells me I might like "Blood on the Tracks."
Avatar 2:16pm
Carmichael:

I agree with the EchoDave. If any Dylan albums are accessible, Blood on the Tracks is one.
  2:21pm
Dean:

BotT is a point of entry, for sure. So is Infidels, believe it or not, if only because Sly & Robbie carry so much weight. But the real Dylan treat to me remains his work with The Band, Planet Waves and The Basement Tapes. Solid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm
Uncle Michael:

I like Bob Dylan very much. There, I said it. The Dylan I don't like is bar far the shorter list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm

BOTT is indeed, a masterpiece.
