Frank London & Lewis Kahn talk Judeo-Latin Music + a visit with Chinese fiddle master Guo Gan

Lewis Kahn (L), Guo Gan (R).

First, Frank London (Klezmatics, Frank London Klezmer-Brass All Stars, etc.) and Lewis Kahn (Fania All-Stars, Orchestra Harlow, etc.) talk about the long-running love affair between Jewish musicians and Latin music. Lewis is among many special guests participating in Sunday afternoon's big Town Hall concert, "The Klezmatics Present Havana Nagila".

Later, we meet Guo Gan, master of the erhu - the Chinese spike fiddle. Guo plays plenty of traditional music, but he's no purist: He's exploring ways to blend jazz with Chinese traditions. And he has collaborated with everyone from Chinese and Japanese traditional musicians to classical piano great Lang-Lang to French multi-culti jazz players like Ibrahim Maalouf and Nguyen Le and the venerable French world music band Lo'Jo. Guo is in town to perform solo and in yet another cross-genre collaboration - with the Helen Sung Jazz Trio - this Tuesday evening at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall.

Special thanks to our translator, Ruihan Yang, who is also a talented young musician and composer.

Chinese erhu master play music unbecoming of our great leader. Maybe time for 're-education' summer camp for esteemed master of heresy. :)
