So this is Uriah Heep, the only one of the Big Four I never ever listened to.
Avatar 3:29am
Bill Mac:

@Brian No that was Sabbath
Avatar 3:31am
Bill Mac:

Oddly enough I heard them early on but not Sabbath until much later unfortunately. Who are the other of the big four?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32am
Brian in UK:

Just compounding my ignorance!
The Sweet?
  3:32am
Emile:

Zep and Deep Purple, supposedly. I came to Sabbath later, too, in a big way.
Avatar 3:33am
Bill Mac:

Of course! and I call myself a DJ!
Avatar 3:33am
Andy in Berlin:

I thought the big four were Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeath. Is there another big four?
  3:35am

Ha, we're talking about a different era... the old man era... and now you're face is mine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35am
Brian in UK:

@Andy would that not be the second generation devils spawn.
Avatar 3:36am
Bill Mac:

I'll just let you guys discuss - funny I'm a 70s guy and I probably would've been able to name the 80s metal band quicker.

Emile:

likin' this owl thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37am

I was indoctrinated with the first series of Game of Thrones whilst on holiday. Sex & intrigue.

But for me Uriah Heep was band I knew was popular but never heard... same with Iron Butterfly...

It's 'glam' just kind of a sham category??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47am
Brian in UK:

Bay City Rollers
  3:47am

Slade was 'glam' I guess
  3:48am
P-90:

bay city rollers

Slade! :)
Avatar 3:48am
Jay/London:

good morning Bill and all. Remember the clocks spring forward this weekend in the UK
  3:49am
Emile:

Yeah, let's just call it 70's rock instead!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51am
Brian in UK:

In the Sixties the R 'n B bands all became 'hippie' bands. Same with glam just following the trend trying to make a buck.
  3:52am
P-90:

maybe the key is to view Glam as a period that many bands of several "categories" passed through, rather than as a category unto itself...
  3:53am
Emile:

Don't forget the 'skiffle' bands, which I think we just didn't have in the States, who morphed into the Who, the Beatles, Stones, etc....
Avatar 3:54am
Bill Mac:

@P-90 You had to have a category to tell them apart from Prog bands right?
  3:56am
Marmalade Kitty:

Wizard - Roy wood
Avatar 3:57am
Whooda:

@P-90 I remember Todd Rundgren pandering to the glam crowd for a period...he looked totally ridiculous.
Avatar 3:59am
Jay/London:

then there's Kiss !
  4:00am
Emile:

Zero Hour listerners want to know: did Bill Mac paint his face??
Avatar 4:00am
Andy in Berlin:

my vote for worst offender would have been Eno in the Roxy Music days.
  4:03am
P-90:

is Kiss a glam band? they came out of that scene.
Yes, gabriel was Glam in the beginning, but was Genesis a Glam band? T.Rex was a Glam band if anyone was, but do we remember Marc Bolan or Bowie for that matter as "Glam" artists?
p.s., I started writing this before Bill came on mic and mentioned Kiss
  4:05am
Emile:

Exactly, Bill. Most of these labels were media-influenced, and music lovers didn't really have anything to say about it...
Avatar 4:05am
Andy in Berlin:

I never got Kiss even then. And a few years ago I was doing research for a movie and I bought a bootleg Kiss concert video on Ebay and the actual concert was like a Mad Magazine parody of a Kiss concert.
  4:08am
P-90:

Like Bill just said, at some particular point in time many aspiring acts were Glam in some aspect of their musical ( or more often visual) style, but most were not "Glam bands". Like I said before, it should be seen as a "period" rather than a "category".
  4:10am
The Missus:

don't forget NEW YORK DOLLS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11am
Brian in UK:

Did anyone ever have the Hall & Oats Silver Album. Now that is embarassing, inner sleeve posed almost naked with makeup. Awful.
Avatar 4:12am
Bill Mac:

Yup, another band unjustly lumped into the "glam bag". Hall & Oates too? Naked and makeup? Awful indeed!
  4:18am
P-90:

I feel relieved that I dodged the bullet and never saw that Hall & Oates sleeve, I can't imagine it and I'd rather not. But another example of my point about Glam...
Avatar 4:18am
Bill Mac:

@Brian Just had a look at the H&O Cover. very feminine for sure.
Avatar 4:18am
Whooda:

Short of an official description, I always took "Glam" to mean homosexual / bi-sexual in the makeup and costume trademark. For me, beginning with David Bowie.
Avatar 4:29am
Whooda:

Watching old western on tv right now and realize that Native Americans were Glam before Glam was cool. Face paint and feathers galore.
  4:31am
The Missus:

@Brian is this the H&O inner sleeve you speak ... http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VTZjrOFLAKg/SQ47oLieb6I/AAAAAAAADSk/QFY8_gZbOt0/s400/IMG_4525.JPG

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37am
Brian in UK:

Can anyone describe their ideal Salt Beef Sandwich with emphasis on thickness and volume of beef?
  4:44am
P-90:

We don't actually use the term "salt beef" in the States... can you describe it? Is it like corned beef?
Avatar 4:44am
Whooda:

@Brian Corned Beef Brisket is a salted beef that can be served in thick slices
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45am
Brian in UK:

The reason I ask is that I had one last week with sourdough and emmental and it was toasted. Good but not the real thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am
Brian in UK:

@ Whooda, think you are on the right lines. I'm a bit confused now, maybe it's just a UK thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am
Brian in UK:

It is brisket that had been in brine for a week or so. Loverly grub. Sorry Bill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53am
Brian in UK:

Better go do a Rufus Thomas.
  4:54am
P-90:

OK that sounds like what we call "corned beef". It's hard to find the "real deal" here too
  5:02am
Waldo Jeffers:

Pass me the scissors. Ouch.
Avatar 5:04am
Whooda:

@Brian, Yes exactly, corned beef is soaked in brine for extended time then cooked with bakery spices plus bay and mustard: cinnamon, brown sugar, ginger, clove and allspice.
Avatar 5:04am
Whooda:

1972 our junior high school English teacher and the gay librarian took several weeks from our English study time and we studied Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. The librarian was sacked for that and the teacher was disiplined harshly. Bowie not particularly appreciated in rural Oklahoma in 1972.
Avatar 5:05am
Bill Mac:

@Waldo Yeah, who opens a package like that?
Avatar 5:12am
Bill Mac:

@Whooda - Yeah that might've been considered pushing it back then. I had a music appreciation class in 73 and we used to listen to national lampoon. whoever could keep a straight face at the jokes was given an 'A' for the days' work.
Avatar 5:13am
Whooda:

I didn't understand what Ziggy Stardust was all about but was sure glad it replaced English class.

We've had quite a few McCartney reissues float thru here this past year... and it doesn't surprise me that Wings were together longer than the Beatles. Seems par for the course when you get down to it.

I was just teasing cuz you said you shut down on Beatles post-break-up.
Also: Thanks for the Bobby Sherman, I 've had a gripe for a while that FMU unfairly underrepresents Bobby's stuff...
