Who said that. I was down in Virginia where they close up early. Just came in from Broadway

Joe Frank's not creepy!
  1:58am
Martha:

Yes, he is -
Avatar 1:59am
Whooda:

@Mariano, that's exactly why I like him. Imagine going out with Joe Frank and listening to his stories over dinner, in the bar, wherever. Pretty soon your're going to ask him, "Damn Joe, where's that music coming from?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00am
mariano:

Hah! Ok, I'll concede the point, @Martha, though he's often damn funny too. It's Ree-bow, by the way.
  2:02am
P-90:

Wait-- you mean Joe Frank is creepy, but in a good way. ...right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03am
mariano:

@Whooda -- yeah, totally! I first started listening to him in San Fran back in the 90s when KPFA would play him late at night. I used to fall asleep to his strange monologues and skits.
Avatar 2:11am
Whooda:

@mariano I probably spent the first 20 years avoiding Joe Frank because I am too literal and would take him seriously. Now I can fully enjoy the rich flavor and robust aroma that is Joe Frank.
  2:12am
KP:

After really liking him at first I've found some Joe Frank is too creepy for me and that's saying a lot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14am
mariano:

This Enbi-whatever is creepy too, but I like it!
  2:22am
Martha:

I would not want to define the ways in which JF is creepy - though the combination of that Buddhist guy he excerpts and the misogyny is a good place to start -
  2:24am
Martha:

Yeah - and Enbilulugugal is a bit creepy - esp. the number of times they can work the word "goat" into a song title -
  2:24am
P-90:

I probably go back to about 1987 with Joe. I never thought his stuff was ever really that creepy. And I don't think of Joe himself as creepy because while his shows are sometimes about aspects of life that might be termed "creepy", his own persona in the shows is largely a vulnerable, sensitive Jack Lemmon kind of everyman being confronted by the oddness of it all, alternately bemused and exasperated....there's such a tongue-in-cheek streak of humor in his approach, it's easy not to take any of it too seriously. Maybe its not so much about "creepiness" as it is about absurdity?
  2:28am
Martha:

Maybe it's because I was once in a bar where they were looping him in the ladies room...
Avatar 2:29am
Whooda:

@P-90
That is a good observation, as if the creepiness factor is the idea that he can accept the absurdity so casually.
  2:31am
P-90:

No shit? That sounds like some self-conciously hipsterish kind of bar. Brooklyn perhaps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31am
mariano:

Oh yeah, the Buddhist guy, forgot about him, his oeuvre is so extensive. His misogyny, ok, you've given me something to think about there actually. And ok, he is definitely not the artist to loop in a ladies room!
  2:31am
P-90:

I wonder what they looped in the men's room...
Avatar 2:33am
Whooda:

@P-90 Maybe they looped Hillary Clinton speeches. THAT would be creepy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33am
mariano:

Don't say that name, Martha, you might summon him!
  2:36am
KP:

Joe Frank looped in the ladies'! Yeow!
Anyway, after hearing some great driving ones, and especially when behind wheel myself, the more intentionally bizarre ones rubbed me wrong way.
  2:38am
KP:

This speaks to me
  2:40am
Martha:

It's really great, isn't it? - just got it in here -
  2:43am
P-90:

@Whooda: I don't think Joe's tales are about accepting the absurd casually. Joe is often confused, frightened, exasperated, and exhausted by his adventures. He seems to me more to be struggling to keep cool and not be overwhelmed by it than casually accepting it. His theme is that's all any of us can do, his weird experiences are just slightly exaggerated, more colorful versions of the stuff we all have to deal with.
  2:45am
P-90:

@ DJ Martha: you sculpted another brilliant playlist for us tonight, by the way
  2:47am
KP:

Great stuff, Martha, I'm glad I made it here. Also you run a cool board
Avatar 2:48am
Whooda:

@P-90 I guess that's true. That reminds me of the feelings I sometimes have in dreams when the story line is implausible and sometimes frighting but not totally frighting.
  2:49am
Martha:

It was actually in a Jersey City bar, about 10 years ago, before the place became maybe, kind of, possibly, a bit hip - after I left, of course -
  2:50am
Martha:

Thanks for the good words - feel as though I lost my way in the middle somewhere but got back on track -
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52am
mariano:

Great show as always, thanks Martha! Didn't lose your way at all by my reckoning.
  2:55am
Martha:

Thanks all for checking in and for the kind words and input - have a great week!
Avatar 2:57am
Whooda:

Thanks for the show Martha, I liked your left turn at the doughnut shop.
  2:58am
P-90:

so funny, I believe that you felt like you got off-track and then back on-- but listening out here, you'd never guess that the flow of the mix wasn't 100% planned and intentional
