Tipsy Oxcart: A New Generation of Balkan Musical Mayhem!

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

It all began in the late aughts when Jeremy Bloom founded Balkan-style teen band Group Pubeski. After a detour into competitive whistling (which got him on America's Got Talent), a now grown-up Jeremy and friends unleashed the riotous Tipsy Oxcart.

Massive thanks to our illustrious engineer, Glenn Luttman!

Hi, Rob! Been a while since I don't listen to your show live
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Rob W:

Hi doca, thanks for stopping by in real time! And good evening everyone, thanks for listening in real time or in the future!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm davex:

Hey, Rob, how's it going? Great sounds as always...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Rob W:

Thanks Dave! So far so good...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm The Count of Al Dente:

By the way, I watched an episode of Portlandia that's from this year and they had a shot of two of the cast speaking into WFMU microphones. There was a WFMU banner up on the wall behind them, so I'm guessing it was from one of the live broadcasts somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Rob W:

Yep, heard about the Portlandia episode though I haven't seen it yet myself. Word on the street is that Tom S. from the Best Show on WFMU had something do with it - !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm The Count of Al Dente:

Someone with the sweet hook-ups. I can see Tom involved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm davex:

Compliments to the band - enjoying their French-Turkish-Serbian mix from Germany...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Rob W:

Thanks davex, they'll appreciate the compliment!
  6:57pm Mdurek:

Ohh interesting fills and harmony make this stand out from doo wop which uses the same intro bass line. :). Haha I much prefer this!!!
Avatar 6:59pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

The Tipsy Oxcart fellow said this is a song popular in various places. I'm curious how much of this is contemporary versus strictly more traditional music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm KK:

Piggybacking on Davex's comment - totally agree. most def looking forward to catching them live at some point in the future.
  7:02pm Mdurek:

Just glad the jam took those turns :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Rob W:

Pete - I can ask the question but they did say they're playing mostly traditional songs, however the songs change from place to place and musician to musician, might just have been played by a solo fiddler in the old days, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Rob W:

Pete - I should say, some of the songs could be fairly modern, some more traditional - I'll ask about that. Thanks!
  7:12pm Mdurek:

They play sick bassist tunes! Such even 16ths :)
  7:12pm JakeGould:

Late to the show, but good show from what I am hearing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Rob W:

Thanks Jake and thanks KK and Mdurek!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm maestroso:

Wow, Rob, this is great. Loving this set.
  7:21pm Jonathan:

Please thank the band member who made the movie reference. Found a copy online in 12 seconds. Actual title is "Chia e tazi pesen?" or "Whose is this song?: directed by Adela Peeva and released in Bulgaria in 2003. Copy I found is hardcoded with english subtitles.
Cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Rob W:

Thanks Maestroso! Jonathan, that's great, thanks for the detailed info!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm KK:

Oh the Pajudshko! This is one of the most fun oros to dance. Typically at parties the band plays it faster and faster until only a few people are left on the floor.
  7:27pm Mdurek:

Very inspired by all this! Damn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm KK:

interesting take, very cool
  7:32pm Mdurek:

Gonna try to come out Friday.
Avatar 7:38pm Bonnie Brown:

Tipsy Oxcart was excellent. Thanks Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Rob W:

Thanks Bonnie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm KK:

That BraAgas is really amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm maestroso:

Oh man, I've really been digging the Luzmila Carpio tracks that I've been hearing on F
MU. And now I discover via Wikipedia that she is Bolivia's ambassador to France!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm davex:

Finally got to hear a full show live again - well worth it, band and all - thanks, Rob!
