Hello. I got the trifecta earlier today, switching back & forth between 91.1, 90.1, and 91.9 FM. Some parts of Ramsey, Ringwood, etc. get all 3, but no single one of them is clear everywhere around there, hence the switching back & forth.

Hey Ike, Droll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Cubicle Carl:

The window of getting any FM signal clear is very small.
Avatar 10:11pm
Dave Mandl:

I get a solid signal in Middle Brooklyn, but I tend to listen online anyway.
  10:12pm
JakeGould:

Solid as a rock on 91.1FM out here in Bay Ridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Cubicle Carl:

Bay Ridge is pretty good, and much of Brooklyn is good, but since I only drive through the area, I find that if traffic is clear, I only have 10-15 mins. of good FM.
Avatar 10:15pm
Dave Mandl:

I would think Bay Ridge would be excellent. You're right near the water, pretty clear path to our transmitter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Ike:

Some weekends, I find the area around Flatbush and Kensington harsh listening for FMU because of that scumbag Haitian pirate at 90.9 causing interference. But I was there on a Monday evening recently and they weren't on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Ike:

Correction: Wednesday, not Monday.
  10:22pm
JakeGould:

Hey Dave, I’m not right near the water. But up on the 4th floor of a building that just gets good signals. My 4G LTE speed on my phone goes up to 18Mbps which is just nuts.

Very K. Crimsonish guitar thing going on there

Funnily enough, Robert Fripp was a big fan of McLaughlin.

Fripp interviewing McLaughlin: www.elephant-talk.com...
  10:40pm
P-90:

Yeah, they've had a mutual admiration thing going since the old days. This is not the first time I've heard john McL. play something that was strikingly Frippian....tempting to guess Fripp got more inspiration from McL. than the other way 'round, but who knows?
Avatar 10:42pm
Dave Mandl:

Listen to the opening guitar chords of Crimson's "Red." It *is* John McLaughlin.

Avatar 10:44pm
Dave Mandl:

Sorry, I don't mean literally. I mean Fripp sounds exactly like him.
Avatar 10:47pm
Droll:

Yes and no... By then Fripp was using his New Standard Tuning, so there are lots of chord voicings and intervals in KC never heard from the hand of McLaughlin. Having said that, yes, the similarity is striking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Cubicle Carl:

Dylan once said that this is what his real voice sounds like and the rest was a put on.
Avatar 10:49pm
Droll:

And by "striking similarity" I don't mean the legal term for plagiarism.
Avatar 10:49pm
Dave Mandl:

@Carl: It's like two octaves lower.
@Droll: Too late!
  10:56pm
Carmichael:

Dave, thanks for the Sandy Denny. Great memories.
  10:56pm
P-90:

McLaughlin was very influential among the prog guitar players, Steve Howe describes the guitar intro to Close to the Edge as his favorite bit (of his) ever, and it may be the most directly Mclaughlin-inspired thing he's ever done
  10:57pm
Ed in Scotchland:

Funnily enough, I used to stay only a few more minutes walk away from Rupert St...
Avatar 10:59pm

@Carichael: Any time.
@P-90: I didn't know that about Steve Howe. That's very interesting.
@Ed: Very cool. Maybe you can find some more of those tapes?

OK, Giants lost, life sucks, I'm here. Also, I missed some good music... :(

I saw Fairport one time many years ago in a barn in Northern california. Simon Nicol announced the break, took off his guitar and sat down next to me. He asked if I would stay for the remainder of the show. I laughed.

Is this Terry and Gay Woods? Yoish, you're killing it, Dave!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm

Dave, one thing I like about your show is that I never know what kind of mood you'll be in when you pick the music. A lot of DJs, you know what to expect -- and that's fine -- but YOU definitely have MOODS. It's a feature.

The Final Stretch can't even be over two hours long anymore... This sucks. You go back to 3 hours when Glenn Jones does? Right?

Sometimes I wonder what Andre Breton (a notorious music hater) would have thought if he could have heard music like this.
Avatar 11:35pm

pss, He would have hated it, of course.

Breton hated music? Had no idea. As usual, another thing learned via FMU...

Solaris! Read the novel last year, waaaaaay trippier than even the Tarkovsky version, if you can imagine.

The Geuzen were the Dutch Protestants who went on to form the Netherlands we know today, right? As opposed to the Catholic Flemish.

Ja?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm

Well, there was at least one Dutch jerk named Hans who had a credit for background vocals on the English Settlement album.
