@fred, we went to talk to merzbow after the gig, my gf spoke to him in japanese. he hardly looked surprised and tried talking as fast and low as possible so that she couldnt understand, but she did. he's been forced to smile (well smile like merzbow can smile). i took advantage of the situation to check his exhaustive pedalboard, mainly cheesy guitar pedals (like good ol dod deathmetal) and some really rare stuff he didnt want to give details on... argh.
