The road! .....it burns!
  12:21pm JJ Koczan:

Just like the real thing -- no time to talk with so many bands playing!
Avatar 12:21pm Cecile:

I think you can take something for that, Rev.
  12:22pm Walter Roadburn:

Enjoying these tunes, and no production hassles. Napalm Death's performance was enhanced by the amazing visuals of Costin Chioreanu.

  12:30pm Walter Roadburn:

Lenny Kaye really enjoyed Goatess , he referred to the band at his seminar.
  12:32pm Walter Roadburn:

@coe thank you, its a team effort - roadburn's an artist driven festival. @dianne, great tracks - i'm having trouble coocking dinner..hahaha...
Avatar 12:34pm Diane Kamikaze:

I heard Lenny say that!! Roadburn is like one giant hug with the coolest people and music in the world. Thank you Walter, it's really all about the community you create!
Avatar 12:36pm Cecile:

it's like SF Worldcon for doom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm chris:

One of these days.... I'm gonna wake up at 3 am and buy tix when they go on sale... If I had a bucket list, Roadburn would be on it.
  12:37pm Walter Roadburn:

Roadburn's all about a community, thank you Diane. It was great to hear Lenny say that the bands at Roadburn are their own nuggets!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm coe:

Wow Lenny's stamp of approval that's something to be said right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm common:

this is the shit
Avatar 12:38pm V Priceless:

@ coe - 110%!
Avatar 12:41pm Luna:

Oh man, MANTAR was sooooo bloody good. Hanno was a kind chap as well, he gave me a beer before they started their set. Saw the day after and let him know my cassette never arrived via post, so he gave me one of the limited edition metal boxed cassette with goodies. He rules!

Avatar 12:48pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

MAGMAYARRRS! Kobaian salut!
  12:50pm Walter Roadburn:

Magma played to packed main stage! They were insanly good!
  12:50pm Dean:

Buddy of mine was featured in New Yorker for having created his own language inspired by Magma: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/12/24/121224fa_fact_foer We spent our youth in the '70s exploring the byways of prog. Magma was a favorite.
Avatar 12:55pm Diane Kamikaze:

Magma was one of my highlights for sure! I never heard of MANTAR prior to Roadburn, but I learned quick! They were great, hence my pic from halfway back in the room, I couldn't elbow myself up any closer to the stage!
Avatar 12:56pm Cecile:

magma make me giggle.
Avatar 12:56pm Diane Kamikaze:

And that is LENNY KAYE onstage with HARSH TOKE!!!
Avatar 12:57pm Cecile:

nice! Lenny knows a good band when he sees one.
  12:57pm sweir:

"harsh toke is good smoke" That was a great one for sure! Thank you Diane for the recap!
  12:59pm Walter Roadburn:

Lenny had so much fun jamming with Harsh Toke - they had actually never met.
Avatar 1:00pm V Priceless:

Nice! These Harsh Toke guys are kickin'!

Avatar 1:17pm Cecile:

Oh, Opeth.
  1:17pm Бїll:

Nice. Haven't heard Opeth in a long time
Avatar 1:18pm Cecile:

tylor, I would totally party with you and your friends if our paths ever cross.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm chris:

Right on! Lovin' Opeth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm chris:

Looking forward to reading it, Tylor!
  1:20pm r i s k y:

  1:20pm Walter Roadburn:

Mikael Akerfeldt was a great curator to work with, and his curated Roadburn-event will remain a special landmark in Roadburn history!
Avatar 1:20pm Cecile:

how were they Diane? They were good everytime I've seen them, but they've had like 2 lineup changes since I've seen them.
Avatar 1:20pm Cheri Pi:

I concur, we need to party with you tylor.
Avatar 1:22pm Luna:

Hadn't listened much to Noothgrush, and they were amazing. That singer dude was hilarious.
  1:22pm JJ Koczan:

Noothgrush were fantastic at Roadburn and had the best line of the show about corporate sabotage when their guitar head blew out.
Avatar 1:22pm Pseu Braun:

Rrrrrroadburn it down!
Avatar 1:23pm Luna:

That, and the "you break it, you buy it" comment, hahaha.
Avatar 1:23pm Cecile:

Avatar 1:24pm Cecile:

my friend visiting made me realize how much Finland means to me (by way of the U.P).
Avatar 1:24pm V Priceless:

Great pic DK!
  1:24pm Бїll:

Wait did you see the traditional Circle or the "new" Circle? (They traded names with another band I think)
  1:24pm Walter Roadburn:

It was one of the best Circle shows, according to the band.
Avatar 1:25pm Luna:

And yes, Walter, this was an insanely great curated event. I loved Promise and the Monster and Anglagaard (I may have spelled that wrong).
Avatar 1:25pm Cheri Pi:

go Finlandia Lions!
Avatar 1:25pm Cecile:

who curated it this year?
  1:26pm Tovarich Volk:

Circle epitomises the term 'Sisu'!
  1:26pm Walter Roadburn:

Jussi was in tears at Loop's headline performance.
Avatar 1:26pm Cecile:

you know it, Tovarich!
Avatar 1:26pm Diane Kamikaze:

Circle were one of the best performances I saw at the fest! They came out to the stage, stripped down, changed their clothes into spandex and warm up gear and proceeded to slay everyone...while laughing. Genius!
Avatar 1:27pm Cheri Pi:

Hi Wallter! Greetings from Cincinnati. Cecile it was Mikael Akerfeldt from Circle who curated
Avatar 1:28pm Cecile:

he did a nice job. Boy he knows his stuff. (Even thought Steven Wilson beat him at prog trivia. :D)
Avatar 1:28pm Cheri Pi:

I mean OPETH! I have Circle on the brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm braveness23:

B23 here! Greetings x2 from Cincinnati!
  1:29pm Walter Roadburn:

It was Mikael Ackerfeldt from Opeth.
Avatar 1:29pm Cheri Pi:

Steven who?
Avatar 1:29pm Cheri Pi:

Windhand !!
Avatar 1:30pm Cecile:

very cool. Someday I will get to an artist-curated festival. That would be awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm chris:

Windhand <3
  1:31pm Walter Roadburn:

I meant Mikael Akerfeldt, of course - sorry for the typo
Avatar 1:31pm Cheri Pi:

B23 and I represent an entire city. It's a tiring responsibility.
Avatar 1:32pm Cecile:

THe title of the new SW album made me roll my eyeballs back in my head.

I think you both could have said he was Miwerrtegtdfgreer Akerzxcvvhb from Bon Jovi and I would have gotten it. hahahhaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm braveness23:

Nonsense, CP. Sophia23 sports her WFMU shirts and stickers and is holding up the 8 year old contingent
Avatar 1:34pm V Priceless:

(sidebar) DK - you see the line-up for Scion Rock Fest on left coast in a few weeks? Good chunk of it reads like an extended Fun Machine set, including Windhand!
  1:34pm Walter Roadburn:

I heard that Circle changed their stage-outfit on stage as well after the show - bloody genius.
Avatar 1:36pm Pseu Braun:

Goblin live in NJ was awesome, so glad you got to see them.
Avatar 1:36pm Cheri Pi:

rolls eyes in unison with Cecile.
Avatar 1:37pm Cheri Pi:

wonderful B23! twisting young minds.
Avatar 1:38pm northguineahills:

Didn't Circle give their name to some random band for the year for live touring purposes, or was that last year?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm common:

man, i wish i could've gone!
Avatar 1:41pm Luna:

Oh man, that would be great Diane.
Avatar 1:41pm thunderish' Jay:

hi every1 .. roadburn UAU .. nice pictures .. thanks Diane.. busy here .. l8r
  1:41pm r i s k y:

Damn Whitehorse, Body and Gnaw... Thats a solid lineup, def be at that show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm braveness23:

CP, I overheard Sophia23 talking to her best friend the other day talking about starting a band. Sophia23 suggested the name 'The Screaming Blue Jays'. Her friend emphatically agreed to the name and suggested that they have a very aggressive sound. Sophia23 then stopped the conversation to demand to her friend that the name was HER idea.
  1:43pm Walter Roadburn:

About Circle: that was last year!
Avatar 1:44pm Cecile:

wow, a Three's Company tribute song?
Avatar 1:45pm Cheri Pi:

LOL, that's s so precious B23!!
Avatar 1:46pm Cecile:

it is, isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm common:

just had to click the whole thingy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm coe:

Off topic for a second anybody hear the new Weedeater track that Scion posted for free. Holy poop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm braveness23:

CP, I have actually spent time fretting over the fact that it might be creepy if I hang around my daughters bands as much as I'd like to. I was deeply relieved when she told her friend "my dad can do the sounds when we play out and record cuz he's really good at that". I'm in!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm chris:

I'm with you @common, gonna break Kenzo's clicky starry thingy one of these days...
  1:53pm Walter Roadburn:

"When I die, I hope to go to Roadburn", Yob's Mike Scheidt said about the fest - goosebumbs! What a compliment!
Avatar 1:53pm Pseu Braun:

This Yob is sick
  1:54pm ?:

I am just tuned in, missed so much! What a lineup... holy cow!
  1:55pm Don S.:

Avatar 1:55pm Luna:

Yes, that quote is greatest, and I hope I go to Roadburn when I die too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm chris:

@Walter, he's not alone, brudda. :-)
  1:55pm ?:

asleep behind the wheel of life
Avatar 1:55pm Cecile:

walter, you deserve it.
Avatar 1:56pm Cecile:

It's either Roadburn, Captain Beefheart's trailer or an all-you-can eat shrimp buffet.
Avatar 1:57pm Diane Kamikaze:

I love that Mike is such a quirky, quiet, fun guy and then we he ROARS onstage, it's like, um... wow! Genius. And WALTER, Roadburn IS 'heaven'...What you do is a service to us all! :)
  1:59pm djelrock:

This is getting cut off a lot today. Crrerrrrrap
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm mariano:

@coe: No, but definitely going to check it out, thanks!
  2:00pm Walter Roadburn:

Thank you, Cecile - makes me blush.
Avatar 2:00pm Whosondephone:

  2:01pm ?:

Are these live sets?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm mariano:

Last show, the good Rev Turnip Druid came up with the idea of death polka or black polka. The vocals would have to be along the lines of Indian!
Avatar 2:02pm Cecile:

in my pants.
  2:02pm Walter Roadburn:

Indian played to a packed Het Patronaat, but could easily have played the main stage, as there was line of 1500 people still trying to get in - it was insane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm chris:

Already starred! And that graphic behind the stage is killer!
Avatar 2:03pm Luna:

yep, I tried to get in, but gave up...I sure hope they come to Albuquerque soon
Avatar 2:04pm V Priceless:

Dang Cecile...I was deliberately fighting the "In Your Pants" urge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm coe:

Really loving the Indian
Avatar 2:05pm V Priceless:

Avatar 2:05pm Cecile:

I was too, V. but it clawed its way out of me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Mutant:

Please talk about the Loop set!
Avatar 2:06pm V Priceless:

It's just too funny to avoid, IMO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm chris:

Killer blog post, @tylordurand! Thanks for sharing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm common:

this loop is great! they're coming to philly soon. hope i can make it.
  2:10pm Walter Roadburn:

Loop was amazing. Maybe I'm biased
as I have been waiting for 23 years to finally see them - they had a rocky start, but after 2 songs, they were on fire for the next 90 minutes! Great set list, and Hampson played some mean guitar.
Avatar 2:10pm Cecile:

I know, V. Just have to use it sparingly. hahhaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Mutant:

I already have tix for the Loop show in Seattle. I hope it meets expectations
Avatar 2:13pm northguineahills:

I've always dug anything that Hampson has done, be it Loop, Main, or under his given name.
  2:13pm Walter Roadburn:

@tylordurand what a great read! That pic of you reading metro on the train to Tilburg is priceless. Is so tipical Dutch!
Avatar 2:14pm Cecile:

damn this drummer is feeling it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm chris:

I can not imagine how loud this Inter Arma must have been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm coe:

So bummed had to skip the Loop NYC show it would have been so great almost a week to the day after seeing Godflesh. Don't even want to know if it was good or not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Mutant:

I missed the Godflesh show :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm common:

also missed the godflesh boohoo.
Avatar 2:20pm V Priceless:

great band name!
Avatar 2:21pm Cecile:

Sounds like the title of a Drexciya album! hahha
  2:21pm tylordurand:

Thanks for reading and commenting! Much appreciated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm coe:

Godflesh for me was a running joke with my friends and I. Was supposed to see them 3 or 4 times over a 20 year period and something always happened. They even walked off stage at one point after the second song (because they forgot their water and I don't think they had a road crew) and we all looked at each other like Oh God this really can't be happening but they came right back :)
Avatar 2:27pm Diane Kamikaze:

Loop was breathtaking and mesmerizing. There was a lot of dancing and also some very attentive stillness on the part of the audience. Greatness was certainly present.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Mutant:

Avatar 2:30pm Cecile:

Jesus, lady-Candlemass! Awesome
Avatar 2:31pm V Priceless:

I heard a Mellotron in there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm coe:

@dk that is so cool to hear.
Avatar 2:39pm Cecile:

I guessed right:
" Jennie-Ann Smith [vocs for Avatarium] : AVATARIUM started out as a project from Leif Edling (CANDLEMASS) and Mikael Åkerfeldt (OPETH). Unfortunately, Mikael wasn't able to really commit himself due to time constraints."
  2:39pm JJ Koczan:

Triptykon -- the deepest burn of the Afterburner. Absolutely scathing on stage.
  2:44pm Clay:

We need some Savatage!
Avatar 2:45pm Cecile:

Did they play Roadburn this year? Thought not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm chris:

Gawd how I love the doominess!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

What an excellent show today. If you need an assistant to travel with you next year, please look me up.
  2:47pm Walter Roadburn:

Second that, JJ. Triptykon easily ranks among the absolute highlights of the festival. What a scorching performance!
  2:49pm Walter Roadburn:

Dianne, thank you so much for the great recap. It was great seeing you, and talk to you at Roadburn.
Avatar 2:49pm V Priceless:

On behalf of your minions, Diane, I hereby bestow all kinds of unauthorized thanks upon you for your tireless efforts in orchestrating this fab RB recap! As you are no doubt aware, You Rock!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm common:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm mariano:

Thanks DK!
Avatar 3:07pm Diane Kamikaze:

AAAAK! I was using Spotify for the last song and although I said I was going to play Anciients, I ended up playing Obelyskkh! The playlist has been corrected; look up both bands, it was difficult to choose who to leave OUT of this year's recap! I guess that's a good problem to have! xo
