Hi Kurt, bye Bryce -- great show! -- the animation's not showing up, fyi.

working on it, thanks!

Let me describe it to you mariano: A happy turtle, in the throws of the sudden realization that it is friday. Colors flash abound as he realizes how much of his life has is wasted during his working hours, eagerly awaiting his chance to start anew--for tomorrow is saturday!

mariano:

@?: Hah! It's the shabbos turtle!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm

My, now that is a lovely turtle!

It's singing "Happy Together" because it's a Turtle. I'll be quiet now.

hello all... It's Friday. Again!

Caryn:

Hello all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
Caryn:

Heh, they're previewing the Eurovision candidates on tv. Interesting contrast to Kurt's show.
Avatar 3:40pm
Cecile:

how scary are the costumes, Caryn?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Caryn:

Mostly hohum, Cecile. I only briefly saw one video where I couldn't figure out if the singer was a woman with a painted-on moustache or a bearded man in a beaded gown. That's the only one that's left me puzzled for now. Other than that, boring but cheesy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Caryn:

The crazy costumes are saved for the actual contest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
joe:

I hear so much about Eurovision I've never bothered to follow through with it. I will have to one of these years.
Avatar 3:45pm
Mark Helsten:

ahh. I love hearing the Zeds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
Parq:

Caryn, this is neat. Right now I am able to frame all three of your comments in the box, which means three Gene Wilders tumbling in synch.
Avatar 3:47pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

haQ that's canadian for "zs" i guess, mark?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Possible Eurovision web site (via Australia?). I see the bearded person. www.sbs.com.au...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Caryn:

@Parq: triple the Gene, triple the fun!

@joe: it's always more entertaining for the eyes than the ears. And best enjoyed in a group while under the influence, for maximum snarky commentary and giggles.
Avatar 3:55pm
Carmichael:

Heya Kurt! Freaky skippy music. May want to nudge the turntable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Caryn:

@Ken: thanks for that link. Okay, Austrian transvestite. And typically, the Russians are threatening to boycott because of it. Sigh... I also realised I have no idea who Finland is sending to Eurovision. Not that I care particularly.
Avatar 3:55pm
Mark Helsten:

I'll be catching some zeds, if anyone needs me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
joe:

@Caryn yeah I got that it tends to be unintentional theater of the absurd.
Avatar 4:01pm
Studio B Ben:

Yay! It's my winning announcement! Thanks, Kurt! I can't wait!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Caryn:

@joe: oh, it's a fully intentional theater of the absurd. An open embracing of everything weird, kitch, ridiculous, camp, and the occasional band that turns into a boat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm
joe:

OK now i'm sold
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Parq:

For reasons I won't bore you with, "Hello Dolly" has been on my mind all week, so thanks for making me smile.
Avatar 4:15pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

tell, parq! there's a big dolly anniversary coming up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
Parq:

Oh, it's not much. A bunch of work colleagues and I just put on a little show for one of our favorite people, named Betty, and so the opening song was "Hello Betty". That's all.
Avatar 4:21pm
Cecile:

Caryn - it's all kind of been downhill for Suomi since Lordi.
Avatar 4:28pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

ah, i see parq. it's the 50th anniversary of the movie next month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
joe:

@Cecile I had heard Lordi had done it. i think that is actually how I became exposed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
Caryn:

@joe: I think the best thing is the huge variety of weirdness on offer. Sure, there are bound to be a few boring pop jingles and power ballads, but there's always a nice mixture of Israeli transsexuals singing about Cleopatra, British groups dressed like flight attendants, Norwegian yodelers, and Romanian opera singers putting on weird Dracula-inspired shows. The Greeks have given us everything from the aforementioned band that turned into a boat to accordion-playing punk rockers singing about the glories of free booze, we Finns have sent in everything from monster-masked horror rockers to guys singing about the special feeling you get when you bounce your buttcheeks against someone else's, and the Russians have given us grannies literally baking bread on stage while singing about how nice their cats are, while the Ukrainians once sent this act, which at the time created a stir not with their clothes (which are pretty standard-issue Eurovision) but for the chorus that some people thought said "Russia goodbye" (ah, the irony of that now years later): www.youtube.com...

Caryn:

This show is a nice consolation for missing the jazz festival I usually attend. The quartet consisting of 3 drummers and a guitarist seemed especially interesting this year.
Avatar 4:53pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

caryn, what fest is that? i've gone to the jazz festival in tampere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
Caryn:

@Kurt: April Jazz. It's in Espoo. I've volunteered and performed there before. This year, a few old friends are performing, as are some interesting acts. The new Fela Kuti musical also just premiered in Helsinki.
Avatar 4:59pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

ah, nice. would love to get back to finland one day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm
Caryn:

And on Saturday, they're premiering a new microtonal orchestral piece. It'll be live on the radio, though, so I can catch it. Would be curious in seeing the microtonal accordion and guitar they've constructed, though. And the microtonal pianos being constructed for the next piece.

Kurt, great vacation-day-cleaning-house-music. You help make me sooo domesticated!

I'm sure microtonal instruments are all well and good, but how do they compare with an 8-bit violin? moonmilk.com...

@caryn dear god I feel like I have missed so much :) Thank you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm

@joe: no probs. Gotta say, that's the typical response of people introduced to all the insanity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
Santos L Halper:

It may be out there somewhere, but I have yet to hear a Fela track that wasn't extremely groovy. Thanks Kurt!
Avatar 5:39pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks for tuning in santos! and everyone out there in radioland.

Caryn, a friend of mine wrote a song for Buck's Fizz to play at Eurovision many years back. I believe it may have won.

@Carm: John Danter or Andy Hill?

@Caryn: I was incorrect, it wasn't the Eurovision song. He wrote Run For Your Life and If You Can't Stand the Heat. Just as asides. He's not a songwriter per se, but a musician.
