Guten TZAG @ Guido and everyone on every side of The Pond

@ DJ Bill Mac: Your birthday horoscope says that in the forthcoming year, you will see new professional and personal opportunities open up. Your social life will be animated, and it's a good year to put energy into a special project; but beware the tendency to be impatient: it can be costly. You share your birth date with Sid Vicious, John Wilkes Booth, Fred Astaire, and Bono.

Yes - Cardigan. The local brewery made up a specially labelled Crabstock ale for the day and it was Barley Saturday which means a procession of tractors old and new amongst other things on the day - quite surreal! Sendelica, Earthling Society and Jack Ellister particularly good. Would have loved to do Helsinki or NY.

The missus was telling me about it this week. It's on my iPod (a black hole of new stuff every time I turn it on). I thought she was talking about McArthur Park or Little Green Apples), then I heard it. In my mind Clarence Carters' only claim to fame was that Strokin song

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39am

Should of got Julian Cope to compile a list. Maconie is a bit swayed as he has to keep a BBC6 music audience interested and we all know how bad BBC6 is now….
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40am
Brian in UK:

Was BBC6 ever Good?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40am
Fran:

Weird can be good and often is. Weird can also be awful and its the old word of warning regarding quality control i.e. just because it was released in an original run of 50 on a small label in 1978 doesn't mean its any good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41am

Crispy Ambulance are touring again I believe.

Julian Cope: www.headheritage.co.uk...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45am
Fran:

Was BBC6 any good? Its never been great and often rubbish but occasionally reaches a peak of mediocrity which for mainstream UK radio is perhaps ironically to be applauded as an achievement of sorts. BBC Radio 3's Late Junction programme is probably better than many so called esoteric programmes on other BBC channels
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45am
Wynford Eagle:

@Brian in UK: Love Crispy Ambulance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47am
Fran:

I know where Brian is coming from regarding Mercury Marmite! I quite like them - far fewer missteps than The Flaming Lips who are so inconsistent and increasingly not interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am
Stanley:

@Fran - I gave up on Late Junction some time ago. It got a bit too "smooth alternative" for me and its obsession with Scandinavian jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49am
Fran:

Depends on the presenter Stanley - Max Reinhardt is still very good
Avatar 4:49am
Bill Mac:

Didn't the Lips make it unto the list for their 4 CD set that you have to cue up simultaneously for maximum listening pleasure? Some great songs but I do not get them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49am
Brian in UK:

Bill love or hate. Car Wash Hair is Fab. The early stuff on Fresh before Sony came in with the big bucks is good but a bit messy.

@Fran I hate with a purple passion the word esoteric. Had all the early Lips but they have slowly faded. Death Hit best record of the 90s!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50am
Stanley:

Fiona Talkington, I seem to recall was the culprit. What was that BBC show of experimental electronic stuff called? I remember the 'artistes' came mainly from Belgium.
Avatar 4:51am

@Brian - I remember the first time I heard that one. A record store we walked into was playing it.

Ask Bill about the Lips he is the MAN.
Used to have Zaireeka too much hassle, great idea though. All CD players move at a different speed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am
Fran:

The 4CD nonsense Zaireeka was reissued on RSD - my comment to the shopkeeper was to place the 4 CDs in four seperate towns so that it couldn't be bought by some poor fool with more money than sense - although they may then have gone for the ridiculously overpriced Soundgarden box set!
Avatar 4:52am
Bill Mac:

@Brian You channel one group from a band and everyone thinks you're an expert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53am
Wynford Eagle:

Well i really liked the Iggy Pop shows, and yes late junction is a bastion of strangeness - been listening for years, like nick luscombe, verity sharpe (where she gone?) but remember the campaign to save bbc 6? well we did save it but they then added all the shite you don't need, and presenters, like the blonde one, but do like giles petersen / keris matthews. BBC Wales puts out a great programme featuring welsh up coming and established bands, and no it's not all manics and stereophonics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54am
Fran:

Yes Fiona Talkington - she is probably responsible for a cohort of British Society going to bed wearing a polo neck sweater to read coffee table books listening to chamber jazz on ECM or similar labels - that isn't to say ECM haven't released good things!! I do long for the days of more maverick BBC DJs such as Andy Kershaw!
Avatar 4:54am

@Brian Mark Kozelek coming to London - I care! Although I'd care more if he came to Leeds or Manchester. He is a big favourite of mine. BBC6 could and should be better, but falls short alas and is patience-testingly smug. @Fran re:Weird stuff - I concurr - Sorry I joined these discussions late, that's what happens when you leave the computer for 5 minutes! p.s. I like Stuart Mac, sorry...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56am

I like Stuart Mac myself - its just that The Freak Zone and Freakier Zone's are about as freaky as Housewife's Choice with Jimmy Young!

@Fran haha - now Jimmy Young, there was a show! I suspect there has never been a better summation of Fiona Talkington and yes Kershaw was passionate and had an edge about him. When I was a student I got to interview Peel in his home. An exceedingly lovely man! I asked him if Andy would be up to giving me an interview. He said "I wouldn't if I were you, he's in a bad place right now...I didn't bother.

@Fran saw William Parker, Hamid Drake & John Dikeman last Wednesday very uplifting. What a drummer is Hamid. Then Nick Lowe & John Doe on Thursday. And the car passed its MOT. So a satisfactory week all in all.

So the Bonzoes are normal? Comedy is never taken seriously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19am

I remember seeing the Fall supporting The Magic Band a few years ago and Mark E. was prowling drunkenly annoying the rest of the band by twanging and hitting things as they were trying to play - I'm amazed the drummer didn't paradiddle him to death!

just too much weirdness in my life to tell. i've got about 10 of the albums listed, but for me the most recent incarnation of 'something strange and beautiful has to be lonnie holley. Oh, don't get me started on Tim Buckley…he's never far from my mind, or turntable

I was there at Cafe Oto Brian and yes amazing stuff. As a very inferior drummer who still tries, Hamid is sensational but I love William Parker and John Dikeman's work too - I posted a few photos on my Facebook page if you are interested - nothing great but evocative!

@Andy well it is certainly true now as they tour as Three Bonzoes and a piano. Sad.

Ramases - Space Hymns:
'One glance at the grammatically challenged and logic-dodging sleevenotes will convince you that Mister Ram (Martin to his Earth Mum) was a couple of coins short of a hexagram. Sounding like a Norwegian Eurovision entry on "Oh Mister", a druggy New Seekers on "And The Whole World", and Reg Presley singing over a Unicorn-era Bolan backing on "Quaser One", this is a genuine prog-oddity. It would be nice to report that he's thrusting religious pamphlets at passers-by as we speak, but apparently he committed suicide in the 1990s. The future 10cc provide punchy production and some meaty beaty backing.
