	9:50am ausmanx: don't know where the goals will come from for Belgium. Ghana will get out of Group G ahead of USA! i don't know enough about the Argentine defence, but who's going to stop Messi and Aguero up front? so there we are, Argentina v France in the final!
	9:50am northguineahills: Altidore is only any good if US plays a 4-,4-2, he needs the extra support to produce, he's not a creator. That said, it might work against Portugal, but definitely not Germany (we need the extra midfielder) and probably not against Ghana's speed.

	10:38am Ike: I didn't like either candidate, but when corrupt old mayor Sharpe James endorsed Ras Baraka, that made me extremely suspicious and I reluctantly voted for Shavar Jeffries, despite my distaste for charter schools and all the Wall St. cash behind them. Not that it made a difference.

	10:47am adrian in mpls: @common - i agree. i worked in the rochester, ny public school system for a little while and it was horrible for the kids. either charter schools run like prisons or the regular public schools which were super underfunded and horrible learning environments.

	10:48am Ike: We had really good public schools in my part of Maryland, so when people say the NJ or PA or NY school systems are really awful, I just have no mental framework for that at all. I keep thinking maybe they're exaggerating, which is probably unfair of me.
	10:48am DCE: all schools are f*ckd beyond repair at this point. the whole thing has to be re-engineered from start. my wife is a teacher and loves teaching but hates everything else about it.

	10:50am Cecile: we had an awful public school where I grew up, but since we were near a college and all the professors's kids went there, we all overachieved to the point where we could actually be useful to society.

	10:52am Cecile: Also, toward the beginning of the 80s, a lot of kids dropped out in 11th grade and went to the local college because they weren't being challenged. Wish I would have done that!

	10:56am Cecile: My friend went to a lousy school in Lower Michigan in a suburb but there wasn't that pressure to overshoot the goal. She has done amazingly in life and school, but college was a shock to her at first.

	10:58am Ike: We did have way too many standardized tests in Maryland in the late 80s and early 90s though, so when people suggest there are even MORE of them now, that makes my head spin. That might be the biggest problem in education. That impeded us more than anything else, those stupid wastes of fucking teaching time.

	11:01am adrian in mpls: @Ike -- Yr absolutely right. The school i was in was "pre-testing" every 4 weeks to constantly assess how to adapt their teaching for the state tests. Absolute madness.
	11:02am Cecile: I have heard of that. It's insane. I'm convinced that just focusing on the three R's and teaching critical thinking is enough.
	11:03am adrian in mpls: And you can see how students now at university are good at learning and reciting knowledge -- the endgame of over testing--and not so great at critical/abstract thinking.

	11:05am Cecile: Exactly. Teach people how to learn! Some rote has to be involved in education (grammar rules, times tables, memorizing verbs in languages) but you have to show how these rote tools can be used in business, government, medicine and the arts.
	11:06am OTB: I went to public school in Kentucky. Standards so low that not an instrument has been devised to measure them.
	11:07am Ike: I suppose I must have taught myself critical thinking. My parents helped too, obviously. That needs to be a public curriculum.
