Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am ausmanx:

oh Scott, PLEASE. the US has selected Altidore. i mean, ALTIDORE ! anyway, no one will do WORSE than Australia, i'm proud to say. i think we could break records for goals conceded when we play Spain...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am braveness23:

Didn't mean to sound disrespectful to Scott. Good morning Scott! Good morning WFMU Land!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Scott McDowell:

I could tell you they're great, but I only know one song!
  9:15am marmalade kitty:

A non south american team has never won WC in samerica
  9:15am Tom G:

Altidore won't be the best striker at the WC but not close to the worst either. I'm also not sure the US had a plethora of other choices. Obvious strike options are limited.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Scott McDowell:

Huge Tim Cahill fan, ausmanx!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am ausmanx:

kinda surprised no one's talking about France, really. which might make them a dark horse. they've got the dream draw
  9:41am tonyb:

Uruguay!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Scott McDowell:

No European team has never won a WC in the Americas, fyi.
Avatar 9:42am bibi:

i usually like the US team spirit, they can play but they definitely cant compete for too long with big ones. not a whole world cup, but quarters maybe. well, imho.
ausman, well im french so i should like any french say they are going to fail, but i kind of think like you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Scott McDowell:

France could win it all or lose all three matches and go home :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am braveness23:

Ahhhooooo Werewolves of London! Oh wait... oops
Avatar 9:46am bibi:

argentina got loads of great players but it's been ages they havent played like a team. i think brazilians are so so nervous, i just wish they meet france sometimes, we are their worst memories (with uruguay).
@scott, totally agree. belgium, their team looks real good, but they are so unexperienced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Scott McDowell:

Whoever said Uraguay, another good team that no one talks about, also why I think England won't get out of their group - lose to Italy, lose to Uraguay, draw CR.
Avatar 9:49am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

World Cup predictions? Let me consult my octopus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am ausmanx:

don't know where the goals will come from for Belgium. Ghana will get out of Group G ahead of USA! i don't know enough about the Argentine defence, but who's going to stop Messi and Aguero up front? so there we are, Argentina v France in the final!
Avatar 9:50am northguineahills:

Altidore is only any good if US plays a 4-,4-2, he needs the extra support to produce, he's not a creator. That said, it might work against Portugal, but definitely not Germany (we need the extra midfielder) and probably not against Ghana's speed.
Avatar 9:51am bibi:

germany used to have great display few years ago but oezil is kind of down lately, watching them playing in 2010 & 2012 was such a pleasure.
  9:51am Tom G:

Lukaka has Belgium's goals taken care of.
  9:52am marmalade kitty:

Ghana were cheated last time by the hand of devil suarez. I'll be watching Ghana closely.. Real madrid are after Suarez..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Scott McDowell:

Belgium - so much talent but so young. Should be fun to watch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am common:

almost missed couldn't you wait. so good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am braveness23:

This song is driving my dog nuts. She thinks someone is knocking on the door.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Scott McDowell:

bibi, I think Germany will be tough but no striker! -- they only have Klose who can't play 90 min I don't think, can he? Vollande starts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Scott McDowell:

WC predictions! May 16 edition!

- Brasil - Argentina final
- Dark horse is Chile
- England won't get out of their group & will struggle to beat Costa Rica
- First round fun match: England-Italy in the rainforest in Manaus
- the usa will play a 4-4-2 in at least two games
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Ike:

I didn't like either candidate, but when corrupt old mayor Sharpe James endorsed Ras Baraka, that made me extremely suspicious and I reluctantly voted for Shavar Jeffries, despite my distaste for charter schools and all the Wall St. cash behind them. Not that it made a difference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am DCE:

nice no-neck
Avatar 10:41am bobdoesthings:

Am I correct that every tune by No-Neck is all improv and never recreated?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Scott McDowell:

yes you are correct
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Mike East:

@Ike - did you read the NYer article on the Newark school reforms yet? I'm in the middle of it. Kinda makes my head spin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Ike:

Nope, not yet. Trying to get to that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am common:

man, i would hate to be a kid now. the philly school system is sooooo fucked up. sure it's similar to nj.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am adrian in mpls:

@common - i agree. i worked in the rochester, ny public school system for a little while and it was horrible for the kids. either charter schools run like prisons or the regular public schools which were super underfunded and horrible learning environments.
Avatar 10:48am Marcel M:

Hi bob
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Ike:

We had really good public schools in my part of Maryland, so when people say the NJ or PA or NY school systems are really awful, I just have no mental framework for that at all. I keep thinking maybe they're exaggerating, which is probably unfair of me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am DCE:

all schools are f*ckd beyond repair at this point. the whole thing has to be re-engineered from start. my wife is a teacher and loves teaching but hates everything else about it.
  10:50am EL MUSGO:

Thanks Scott! Finally someone as crazy as I am... thinks Chile can make it. Thanks.
Avatar 10:50am Cecile:

we had an awful public school where I grew up, but since we were near a college and all the professors's kids went there, we all overachieved to the point where we could actually be useful to society.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

L-O-V-E this Ric Colbeck record!
Avatar 10:52am Cecile:

Also, toward the beginning of the 80s, a lot of kids dropped out in 11th grade and went to the local college because they weren't being challenged. Wish I would have done that!
Avatar 10:53am Cecile:

hi Doug!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Hi CC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Mike East:

we are in a good school district right now, but may be moving soon, so its a concern, but like Ike, I don't have much point of reference because I don't have much experience with shitty schools.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Scott McDowell:

DOUG! My radio brother, nice to see you.
Avatar 10:54am pgw in mntclr:

has this gotten a proper reissue?
Avatar 10:56am Cecile:

My friend went to a lousy school in Lower Michigan in a suburb but there wasn't that pressure to overshoot the goal. She has done amazingly in life and school, but college was a shock to her at first.
Avatar 10:56am Cecile:

got the Fujii?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am common:

@ADRIAN: prison is the right word
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Ike:

We *did* have way too many standardized tests in Maryland in the late 80s and early 90s though, so when people suggest there are even MORE of them now, that makes my head spin. That might be the biggest problem in education. That impeded us more than anything else, those stupid wastes of fucking teaching time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Philthy woman:

really dug that last one, by Ric Colbeck quartet
nice 1st radio sounds of my day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Uh, Doug? Don't you have somewhere else to be?
Avatar 11:00am Cecile:

we had them a few times. In a way they screwed me over because I do great on math standardized tests (lots of geometry and pictures) but struggle with it IRL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Scott McDowell:

I love when Doug shows up on my playlist during his show, the man has 8 arms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am adrian in mpls:

@Ike -- Yr absolutely right. The school i was in was "pre-testing" every 4 weeks to constantly assess how to adapt their teaching for the state tests. Absolute madness.
Avatar 11:02am Cecile:

I have heard of that. It's insane.

I'm convinced that just focusing on the three R's and teaching critical thinking is enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am adrian in mpls:

And you can see how students now at university are good at learning and reciting knowledge -- the endgame of over testing--and not so great at critical/abstract thinking.
Avatar 11:04am Rev. Turnip Druid:

PEOPLE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Philthy woman:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am sinister dexter:

woohoo! one of my favorite songs ... check out the Asa-Chang and Junray version
Avatar 11:05am Cecile:

Exactly. Teach people how to learn! Some rote has to be involved in education (grammar rules, times tables, memorizing verbs in languages) but you have to show how these rote tools can be used in business, government, medicine and the arts.
  11:06am OTB:

I went to public school in Kentucky. Standards so low that not an instrument has been devised to measure them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Ike:

I suppose I must have taught myself critical thinking. My parents helped too, obviously. That needs to be a public curriculum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Philthy woman:

oop- Anthropologic 1 & 2, that is...
thank gooooodness for archives I'll have to check out these goodies later when 'puter works. Anyway thnx for staring my day right Scott McDowell!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am DCE:

so glad that my son is going to a private high school (next year) where it's very hands-on and interactive and embracing of a "new" way to teach
Avatar 11:09am Cecile:

absolutely. I'm seeing it in my art classes. Nobody can critique. And don't get me started on the lack of imagination. Thank God our school makes you SKETCH before you start a project.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am adrian in mpls:

@Cecile - Agree 100%.
  11:09am mitsos:

My first comment
Hello WFMU :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am adrian in mpls:

Also, Chile is a good World Cup shout. They, at least, should be entertaining. A little worried about their striking options, though.
Avatar 11:10am Cecile:

This song KILLS IT.
Avatar 11:10am Cecile:

and hi, mitsos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

This track used to be the opening for the late, great WFMU deejay Raymond Franks' show.
Avatar 11:11am Cecile:

Also, too many school districts spend their money on tech when they should be spending it on teachers, and in some cases school supplies.
Avatar 11:12am Cecile:

what an opener, doug.

I mean, if you don't know how to do basic math, a calculator is just a crutch, and if you only use spellcheck, you never learn how to spelll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am sinister dexter:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am common:

couldn't agree with you more, cecile.
Avatar 11:17am Cecile:

and parents, it wouldn't kill you to read to your kids, or even watch a movie that does not involve talking animals or cars (although i love them).

*steps off soapbox*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am adrian in mpls:

@ Cecile - Right - if you don't know any principles/ideas behind something, actually being able to use math, shape language, etc. becomes pointless the instant someone is telling you how to do something
Avatar 11:18am Cecile:

Scott, is Asif Tshar behind this group?

Exactly, adrian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am adrian in mpls:

I'm kind of under the impression that Bryce is chronically late.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm braveness23:

Perhaps he has to slip into a deep meditative state before he can go on the air.

Avatar 12:16pm bobdoesthings:

to quote Bryce "I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order. " PSSSHH!!! yeah..
