Hi every fellow listener! Hello Jason!

I was just about to say what bobdoesthings said, and I really like it!
Avatar 9:29pm
northguineahills:

The new Liars sounds a bit like Vatican Shadow.
Avatar 9:30pm
bobdoesthings:

@northguineahills.. I like the old Liars .. not sure if I'm into the synthy/edm stuff..
Avatar 9:35pm
northguineahills:

I have some old Liars stuff.

on a different note, but EDM to me seems to be a descriptive as rock. The first time I heard of it was when Anthony Bourdain used it to describe the night scene somewhere. I could be wrong, maybe it's something more specific (I learn a lot from the WFMU comment boards).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Andrew Waterloo:

EDM seems to be a catch all for cold sequenced music
Avatar 9:38pm
bobdoesthings:

yeahhhh I know I am not using that term correctly.. you know what I mean though.
Avatar 9:39pm
bobdoesthings:

on a funny sidenote.. I almost pursued a lady on a dating website until she listed EDM as her type of music. dealbreaker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I like EDM and I thought it was close enough for that Liars song, but EDM is like shoegaze where some will debate the finer points, but most just like a particular texture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Andrew Waterloo:

My dealbreaker is variations on "I like everything"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Jason:

I like everything!
Avatar 9:47pm
northguineahills:

Uhmmm, I like many things, just depends on how pedantic one wants to be on the music categories.

I have to admit I hate most EDM (and I love a lot of house/techno/etc), but I also hate most music that I hear out and about.
Avatar 9:47pm
northguineahills:

RIP Dj Rashad.
Avatar 9:48pm
bobdoesthings:

@jason Oh you!

@AW - I guess I don't really know what EDM is haha.. I'm trying to remember what band she mentioned that I looked up on youtube... ergghh oh well. It was like super cutesy, dance pop with synths and high pitched cutesy cloying vocals and just ... ughh deplorable
Avatar 9:50pm
bobdoesthings:

When people I don't know ask me what music I am into ... I am really at a loss. I don't know how to respond other than say "I like a lot of things.. just has to have the right feel to it."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Bob.. yah.. I tend to think of Front 242. But, then again I used to hang out a bar the played industrial music and power noise.
Avatar 9:51pm
bobdoesthings:

Also.. I feel like the more years I spend listening to WFMU the more open I am to anything. It's not like when I was a teenager and was like "hardcore punk motherfucker!! now lets steal booze from our parents and go loiter somewhere!!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
coelacanth:

olá Jason, Everyone.
  9:53pm
Colin:

I don't have bad connotations with edm like i do with idm.

And i really don't like it when people say they like everything but country.
  9:53pm
Flanders:

so you still steal booze from your parents but listen to a wider range of stuff?
Avatar 9:53pm
northguineahills:

@bobdoesthings: I'm also at a loss when people ask me what music I like. Even if the random stranger at a party has A decent taste in music, it's usually a rather narrow spectrum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Andrew Waterloo:

yah.. I get annoyed with "I like everything" because extremely vague (I mean list a couple groups at least) and anyone can say it.
Avatar 9:54pm
bobdoesthings:

@colin .. ahh is that "intelligent" dance music? like prefuse 73 or something?

@flanders.. nahh I'm a big boy now.. I get drunk all on my own.
Avatar 9:55pm
northguineahills:

I'd have to say, there isn't much country music post-1983 I like. (w/ the obvious exceptions, if they are 'country')
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
coelacanth:

bob (dt) yes,i get slightly flustered by that question... but i might answer,"i like music that makes me Feel...and i like music that makes me think...I don't like much music that does neither."
Avatar 9:57pm
northguineahills:

I like IDM unless it suffers from the overt structuralism that math rock suffered from in the late 90s.
Avatar 9:57pm
bobdoesthings:

@north yeahh.. but even still.. I don't like country much either.. but recently that one Laura Cantrell song has gotten a bunch of airplay.. now it's a guilty pleasure of mine. I can really like any genre if it's got a good feel or i'm in the right mindset..

@coelacanth - I like that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I still don't how to answer the question.. I've been trying to say something that starts a conversation but it's difficult.
Avatar 10:00pm
bobdoesthings:

I've also tried to answer it with mentioning WFMU.. god the blank stares I've gotten..
  10:02pm
Colin:

@bob... Yeah. I think they started using the term around aphex twin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I had a guy approach me about my Goblin shirt a couple days ago.. he even looked them up on youtube.. and told him, I said it's great that you're interested, most people clam up when they hear about something unfamiiiar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Aphex Twin, Autechre, Plaid.. I think IDM comes more out of a loss to describe it.. I mean it was sort of in the dance scene, and looked like like the guys that do house, but came from somewhere else.
Avatar 10:05pm
northguineahills:

that's always welcoming, andrew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Andrew Waterloo:

This has been a good set for drinking beer and reallocating memory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
coelacanth:

There's been tension between myself & this guy in my town, going back to a minor incident years ago. Once at the pub he beat me to the jukebox and i said "i'm glad it's you.I always learn something when you're on the jukebox." ..We're quite friendly now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
coelacanth:

isn't "edm" a very general term?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Jason:

is this EDM right now?
Avatar 10:13pm
bobdoesthings:

I sort of hate all these niche subgenre classifications. I have a friend who once debated the difference between black metal, death metal, doom metal, stoner metal, and liek 3-4 other types.. When does it end... I'll leave these things up to the academics and nerdy music writers needing terms in which to define the music. ya know.. I'm fine with sounding like an idiot, I know what I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
coelacanth:

it's electronic;and someone,somewhere can dance to it,so...Yes?
Avatar 10:15pm
bobdoesthings:

@coelacanth.. but... are they dancing intelligently? or just regular? that's where the E or I comes into play
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

There's some series on VH-1 Classic I've seen a few times on Saturday nights. The guy explores various sub-genres of metal. It's kind of neat to see the interviews with the musicians.

Ken, I've seen that show too. It's a fucking joke of a series I think.
  10:19pm
Colin:

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what i like more, what I'm listening to right now or country music
Avatar 10:19pm
bobdoesthings:

@rory.. I've seen it as well. but honestly.. it's just cool it exists on TV.. better than it not be represented at all .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
coelacanth:

bobdoesthings That's a funny question, but there's something to it...The music is fairly devoid of "soul",so,for someone in his/her un-altered state, it would be an intellectual process to dance to it,no?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm

It'll be a fun World Cup. Hopefully, Brazil won't annex the Falklands or some nonsense like what occurred right after the Olympics recently.

Rio de Janeiro is a pretty rough spot for a big event such as the World Cup.
