Good Morning, DJ Samantha.
  12:06am
P-90:

It's the seventh edition of "Samantha",
a nice lucky number.

good evening.

Hi there, Samantha and Samanthanites!

Hi Samantha,Hi everyone.

Hmmmm, I had no idea Mr. Shields made music that sounded like this. Not surprising, but still a surprise. I like.
Avatar 12:22am
bobdoesthings:

@droll.. the playlist isn't up to the minute accurate.. a handful of songs have gone by since kevin shields
Avatar 12:24am
Droll:

Well, to the rubbish bin with Mr. Shields then!
Avatar 12:25am
Pat Byrne:

Nice show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29am
Gaylord Fields:

Samantha, you will keep me up past my bedtime the way you are going so far. This is exemplary programming!
Avatar 12:32am
bobdoesthings:

I believe Dva pronounced da-va I believe Ken has mentioned - russian word for "Two" and they sing in a made up language.
  12:34am
P-90:

Yes, "dva" is "two" in Russian
Avatar 12:37am
bobdoesthings:

is this inutilli right now? Hey Samantha could you put info in the "track" field so I can clicky star it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44am
Gaylord Fields:

@bobdoesthings: i can tell you as a WFMU veteran that it's really difficult to program a show and engineer said show and take care of the playlist all at once. So please carry on indulging Samantha during what is only her seventh WFMU program, and don't sweat the playlist's accuracy.
Avatar 12:46am
bobdoesthings:

@gaylord, ah I was worried I came off rude there. My apologies. It's all good, this show is great!! Just wanted to clarify to Droll before to be helpful. Cheers!
Avatar 12:48am
Droll:

Don't forget all the clipboards of paperwork that need initials and times and dates! DJs need extra time to break things, which usually happens spontaneously when a song ends and you just opened the mic.
  12:50am
rw:

7th show?! Go Samantha! Woo!!!
Avatar 12:51am
Droll:

... and binders full of PSAs, Soviet era EAS machines... It's a tough job, WFMU DJs earn every cent they're paid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51am
Tome:

...putting these wonderful ,,, all different shows every week ,, alone is just amazing what goes into it ,,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am
Gaylord Fields:

@bobdoesthings: And I don't want to seem overly protective of one of our best new DJs, but as someone who has a complicated relationship with the playlist and comments board myself, I know how hard it can be to multitask. Thanks for clarifying. And yes, this show is really phenomenal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58am
Ken From Hyde Park:

The "Static Kings" track sounds like what you'd get if you could record your dreams.
  1:00am
rw:

Huh... I wish my dreams sounded like this. Mostly I dream about work. Yuck.
Avatar 1:01am
bobdoesthings:

@gaylord - all good man. I'm loving this setlist... Loving every track!! Gotta follow from now on for sure, you ain't kidding about "best new DJ".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02am
Ken From Hyde Park:

I dreamed the other night that I dropped my cell phone and the case broke. In the dream, I said "No problem. This is a dream. When I wake up, my phone will be just fine." It sure would've been weird to wake up and find my phone broken. Hoo boy.
Avatar 1:08am
bobdoesthings:

@ken from HP - you have lucid dreams a lot? I'm always so happy when I experience ones that I can actually acknowledge it's a dream.. rarely ever happens.
Avatar 1:09am
listener mark:

Hello Samantha, happy seventh show. Excellent! Inutili was already favorited already from before. You are playing my favorites.
  1:10am
rw:

@Ken: Not that I'd wish your cell phone broken, but it would have been pretty mind blowing.
  1:12am
P-90:

@ Ken; like bob said, lucid dreams like that are considered to be very rare
some folks have tried techniques to make them happen more ffrequently, apparently with practice one can learn to consciously "direct" the dream
Avatar 1:13am
bobdoesthings:

One time I realized I was in a dream.. and in a panic decided I had to do something bold and I jumped over a counter at a fast food like place and tackled the cashier.. I then woke up.. UGH.. Right when I realize I can fuck with my reality...
  1:15am
P-90:

That's something else they say, that you can learn not to wake up upon realizing that you are lucid in your dream, which tends to happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17am
coelacanth:

i may be dreaming lucidly, but i don't know. I've such a poor relationship with sleep that i dont know if i'm totally asleep during all those dreams in which i know i am dreaming.
Avatar 1:17am
bobdoesthings:

Oh so is lucid dreaming only the realization? And not the actual control of events in the dream?
Avatar 1:18am
bobdoesthings:

Like if I have the realization that it's a dream but don't have the mental capacity to control the events/experiences. Is that considered "lucid"? Or is it when you're actively participating?
  1:19am
P-90:

"lucid dreaming" = being aware that you are asleep and dreaming
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19am
coelacanth:

bob (dt) yes. knowing it's a dream makes it "lucid",i'm pretty sure.
Avatar 1:21am
bobdoesthings:

Ah.. so is there a term for the ability to control outcomes or make active decisions?
Avatar 1:21am
Kurt Gottschalk:

hold the phone, is sammy a commie? this changes EVERYTHING!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am
coelacanth:

that's called "awesome".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Off to dreamland. If I experience anything interesting, I'll post a report. Take care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22am
Gaylord Fields:

I had always heard that if you have a falling dream and you hit the ground instead of waking before making impact, that means you will have died in your sleep in real life (which defies logic, because how would anyone know what a dead person's last dream was). When I finally had a falling dream, I hit the ground, exclaimed "Bullshit!" and woke up.
  1:22am
P-90:

@ bob: Experiments done with this have involved learning to take conscious action in the dream, like you did when you tackled the cashier (!), but not waking up after the first action or two taken, like you did
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22am
coelacanth:

'night Ken. Make 'em good ones.
Avatar 1:24am
bobdoesthings:

@gaylord HAHAHAH that's great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am
Gaylord Fields:

I was a lucid and skeptical dreamer in my adolescence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26am
coelacanth:

Gaylord,i've had 2 falling dreams i recall. As you,in one i did hit the ground,then awoke.(i didn't exclaim"bullshit"!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am
coelacanth:

...the other i awoke right as i realized i could not grasp anything at the top edge of a bottomless hole through the earth,so i experienced extreme terror, and woke up.
  1:29am
P-90:

@ DJ Gaylord: I've actually been shot more than once in dreams, fallen from heights, been attacked by wild animals; no worries, you can die repeatedly in dreams.
In the movie "Inception", they did a special kind of dreaming, in which you had to avoid getting killed in the dream because you would wake up immediately and be out of the action
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am
coelacanth:

(i guess that's not really a "falling" dream.)
Avatar 1:30am
listener mark:

Hypnagogic dreams or hypnapompic dreams?
Avatar 1:31am
bobdoesthings:

the only other one where I controlled my dream was a bear was chasing me in a busy suburban town center.. chasing me around a little town square.. and then I was realized it was a dream and just nonchalantly walked up the the charging bear and slapped wrestled with him like it was my cat.. and walked off. oh man I'm talking about dreams again.. I should go to bed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34am
Gaylord Fields:

My subsconscous got its revenge when it pulled a double nightmare on me: I woke up from some stupid medium-scary nightmare with the requisite sense of relief, only to glance in the corner of my bedroom to see a figure of a man standing there — who subsequently came apart at all his joints and collapsed in a heap! After that, I really, truly woke up, pee-pants scared, and determined not to go back to sleep that night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am
Gaylord Fields:

*subconscious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am
coelacanth:

P-90 that sounds like a cool movie.

Yes i've definitely controlled dreams...When they become too absurd to believe,i realize it's a dream and stop taking it seriously.
  1:36am
P-90:

As a kid I had a just a couple of really terrifying "falling" dreams, very vivid and memorable, I'm sure they were inspired by growing up in tall apartment buildings and being very aware of the danger of heights.
In these dreams, I would just fall and keep falling, without ever hitting the ground. And always accompanied by Carl Stalling's "falling" music from many Looney Tunes --you must know it, with the swirling strings and the rolling snare drum?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am
coelacanth:

Holy shit Gaylord,that's terrifying!
  1:41am
P-90:

@ Gaylord: The genuine "dream within a dream", with the clear awareness of waking up that turns out not to be true, is also considered to be very rare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41am
Gaylord Fields:

@coelacanth: I must have been around 11 or 12 years old when that mega-nightmare occurred. I think I slept with the light on for several weeks afterward.
Avatar 1:42am
bobdoesthings:

this reminds me of joe mcgasko's bed music
Avatar 1:42am
bobdoesthings:

wait is it?
Avatar 1:43am
Droll:

BDT - Hah! I was thinking the same thing!
  1:44am
Santos L Halper:

I think close to it bob. I finally shazam'ed it today and it was from this record...
Avatar 1:45am
bobdoesthings:

I can't believe I don't remember because I definitely have asked Joe via comment boards what it was more than once...
  1:45am
Santos L Halper:

Was called Crystal Clear; this must be the vocal version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45am
Gaylord Fields:

@P-90: It happened only that once, that I can recall, and that's more than enough.

Also, as an adult, I have many more recurring dreams than when I was a child.
  1:46am
rw:

Kevin Ayers. I think Samantha may be commenting on all the dream talk.
Avatar 1:47am
bobdoesthings:

alright. time to be a responsible bob and get some sleep. adios commentors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47am
coelacanth:

Yeah I've had a few dreams that profoundly affected me for months.(or,forever?);some crazy scary ones.

I used to so often awake from bizarre dreams that i eventually took them for granted,to some degree.
  1:47am
rw:

Sweet dreams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am

sweet lucid dreams.bob dt.
Avatar 1:48am

I've had dreams that ended when an alarm clock or other loud noise would work it's way into the dream until it becomes the focus of my attention, then I'm awake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50am
Gaylord Fields:

G'night, all! I'm off to have my most common form of dream: The kind where I wake up and have no recollection of having dreamt.
  1:51am
rw:

I have those all the time... I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52am
coelacanth:

well, that's kinda boring; but it amounts to the most useful, restful sleep!
...g'night Gaylord.
  1:53am
rw:

Yes. G'night Mr. Fields!
  1:53am
P-90:

Some people report they never remember their dreams, often they even think they don't have them at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58am
Gaylord Fields:

Final remark, and then sleepytime: I'll often wake with zero indication of having even dreamt — until something I encounter during the day will jog my memory and the dream emerges from nowhere!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59am
coelacanth:

i think the prevailing attitude in psychological studies is that without the mental activity that results in dreams, one would eventually lose sanity. ...which may happen with serious alcoholics, since one doesn't reach alpha state when drunk.
Avatar 2:01am
Kurt Gottschalk:

i had a dream gaylord fell on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03am

okay i'm going to see if i can muster up some fmu dj-falling-upon-each-other dreams,& take control of them (the dreams, that is!)...I don't know what most of them look like so the focus will probably be on various squeaky sounds they make as they're being landed upon. I plan to wake up laughing.

Thank you Samantha for a brilliant program! (i'm coming back for it again.)
