WOW! "Mercy, Mercy" is one of my favorite jazz pieces, found on Cannonball Adderly's PHOENIX LP. I've been listening to it for almost 40 years. I never knew it was a cover, never new it had lyrics. Love it!

Choo Choo, I could be wrong, but I think the Cannonball version is the original, and it's one of those things where the instrumental was such a hit, they wrote lyrics so vocalists could cover it. I assume you know that the Cannonball version was a big top 40 hit.
Avatar 11:43am
Michael Shelley:

Cannonball's version is the original - written by the keyboard player who went on to form Weather Report

One and all: thanks for the schooling. -- This issue is similiar to "Birdland" and Weather Report / Manhattan Transfer editions.

hard to say exactly - I think it was an attempt to make a version for that 1st lp - that they just didnt finish

Interesting that "Mercy" was written by the keyboardist. When the track was on AM radio when I was a sprat, I remember it being so dominated by the electric piano that I assumed that was Cannonball's instrument. I was surprised to find out later that he was a sax man, and more surprised to find out still later that he was one of the giants of jazz for years before the release of "Mercy". Youth ...
