There was a pretty rich music scene in much of the 90s and KBOO was much more involved. There are bands whose sole recordings were recorded live off the air at KBOO.
Part of it was The Church of Northwest Music show, with lots and lots of local bands appearing on the air. Sadly, it ended sometime in the late 90s/ early oughties.

Much of it still being recorded on open reel, DAT. I think local DJ Jay Bozich has a really huge local band archive, since he did most of the live sound at KBOO and several Portland venues.

I think Meltzer was in it due to his association with the band Smegma. The guy who shot and directed it is a member of the Portland OR faction of Smegma.

Found an interview w/ him that mentions the club. I knew Meltzer in LA, got him a speaking gig at my college alma mater, visited him at KPFK when he did the overnight show, used to correspond with him. (Took him to dinner at Higgins in Portland.) Was reading some of his stuff last night. Wish he had a regular writing gig.

Satyricon was really amazing. Another place and time. Almost all of that part of PDX is completely unrecognizable to me now. It's been made safe for upper-middle class white kids now. A place to shop and stare lovingly into the eyes of their iPads in outdoor cafes.

Much like the beloved Al's Bar east of downtown L.A. It and the Masque were the L.A. punk venues of the late '70s. Al's closed in '01, I believe, and became a trendy disco or or gallery or something of the sort. In the heyday, what a joint! Best jukebox ever. Saw many a show there.

The Satyricon made a few feeble attempts at comebacks, with a series of sleazy owners.. The PDX music scene changed a lot by then. It was finally knocked down and a Ronald McDonald House corporate office was built on it.
At one point, sleazy landlords conspired to blow up the whole block the 'Con was on, due to all of the heroin activity. The doc claims the PDX police helped them sweep people out of the area as the guys bombed the bodega next door.

Continuing with the "back in the day" punk lore, here's Al's Bar's facade, famous for its airplane: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/164029611400764423/ Entry was via the door beneath the canopy marked, "American Hotel." I kid you not, on our wedding day my wife and I held a "reception" at Al's. Drunk Horse played.

The owner was a really cool Greek dude named George. He really loved any kind of arty weirdness, so he turned the tavern into a nightclub/cabaret. It was only by default that it became Portland's punk rock club in the 80s. Lots of cool poetry and performance (and sex and drugs) went on in there.

John and his twin brother Paul were precocious, to say the least. They were both very artistically adept. We used to create one-off faux-progressive rock LPs and smuggle them *into* record stores. They consisted of beat-up vinyl slipped into covers painted by them, with artist names like Stregone Cosmico, suitably Italian. Once, a mutual friend fell for it and bought the record.
