Beg to differ with respect to Last's celebrity here. If the number of LPs in used bins during the '70s is a fair measure of an artist's former popularity, he was well-known. His records were ubiquitous. OTOH, he didn't get a lot of FM airplay back then.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am

James Last was the unevitable adult party music of 70ies Germany. Tons of gold and platinum selling albums all the rock people hated with passion. Though as a person he is reportetd as an extremely sweet guy. Quite a few prog-rockers and jazzers made a good living from working in his big band.

Fabio's title music comes from the rarest, cultiest and expensiest "Voodoo Party"
  11:18am
Dean:

Speaking of famous German musicians, I learned of Herbert Grönemeyer in the '80s, where his music was introduced to me as "the German Peter Gabriel." One tune, I recall, was "Bochum," about his home town. According to the wiki thing he's a megasuperstar. Guido, did his music go well with the prog crowd?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
Guido from Cologne:

Actually Grönemeyer started in an obscure late 70ies prog band ... which was not too bad actually, kinda fusion. He is not well loved by today's music underground though.

Actually the conparison with Peter gabriel might work in his role as a mentor (for instance he's responsible for deluxe re-issues of NEU), but not as an artist.

His first big hit was "Männer" (Males) , which was a surprise to all show-biz-pros, since it was very weird at the time (I must confess i -not getting the irony- hated it). Kinda new-wavish, but not a real exploitation production. He later on went more and more mainstream, becoming more and mor e an identification figure for his hometown Bochum and the whole "Ruhrpott" (the coal-mine and steel-cookers valley of Germany that went in heavy crisis in the mid-70ies).
