...when I were an impressionable (& eventually stoned) young'un, would listen to Jerry Goodwin 'The Duke of Madness' on WBCN Boston @ night whilst sleeping - & was given the gift of incomprehensible dreams. I thot such could never be again - but Lo' - after this significant fraction of a Century - there be Internet & FMU...I can dodder off into senility & oblivion in nocturnal delusion...like the Vikings sent the ancient & enfeebled off to sea to die on ice flows...goin' back to bed...

I think Fogerty considers Fortunate Son to be a very patriotic song. It was inspired by his experiences in the service, whether you served or refused, or even were a "fortunate son" who got out of the draft because of your family connections, you were all in the same boat, no one was buying into that Vietnam agenda. Or at least that's how he interprets it.
