@peter: Please do. It's spectacular!

Thanks for supplying the link, tilde-L!

Jack:

Wow. Thank you everybody for this flashback. I was born and grew up in Long Beach CA area (Lakewood) and P.O.P. was wonderful. We probably went there a dozen times when I was a kid, couldn't get enough. I think I might have old 8mm home movies of the family there. I haven't even thought of it in decades; suddenly I'm 11 again!

Jack:

(I missed the first part of the show, I'll listen to the archive, but I will definitely get this book.) Thanks again.

...perfect Summer (holiday weekend) show
...lord - those line-ups !!...

Boggles the mind just how run down that part of Santa Monica / Venice was at that time (and until the '90s really), probably had lost to do with the demise of POP (I live in Venice, btw)
Avatar 6:05pm
Peteski:

Let me ask then: Did the "bad" neighborhood (that part Santa Monica / Venice was pretty run down) have anything to do with the parks demise? Being that Anaheim was pure white suburban and practically empty? Crazy how people at that time didn't place being at the beach as a winning element.

that Ritchie Valens tune is epic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Peteski: I'll ask my guests. Thanks for the question!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
Gaylord Fields:

@SeanG: He was seventeen! Poor kid never made it to effin' 18!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Angel Baby' a fave of John Lennon's; the flipside is reportedly some kinda classic breakdown (??) - I've always wanted to hear
- yeah - even Buddy Holly was only 22 (!!!)

JakeGould:

Effing great show. Also, makes me wistful for those times where lots of land would just have amusement parks just because. Great era.

My favorite ride was the Diving Bell!!! It was scary! and cool!
  6:32pm
JakeGould:

@Jack, was that a diving bell that just dunked into a n above ground pool? They had one of those at Astroland. Liked that!
  6:35pm
Jack:

Jake, yes, a big iron tank you were strapped in, and then a lot of hydraulic clanking and you'd be lowered into..like, maybe 20 feet of water! But there were fishes and sharks and things swimming in it.
  6:37pm
JakeGould:

In Astroland it was mainly murky water & a shark or whale. They actually still have the shark or whale somewhere behind the Cyclone in Coney Island.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...here's 'Angel Baby''s flip :
www.youtube.com...
...I overstated what I read about it; what's notable actually is the contrast between the A (Pop) & B (raw R&B)-sides
- & what *that* says about the Era ;
...it's always interested me that the Common Myth was there was nothing between Elvis joining the Army & The Beatles arriving - the ways this is - & is **not** true - as illustrated very well exactly in previous sets right here...
  6:39pm
Jack:

From the bottom of the tank, you'd look up through the portholes and see the light streaming through the water, and the sea life. It was transcendental (for a kid) I so wanted to become a marine biologist.
  6:43pm
JakeGould:

“It was transcendental (for a kid) I so wanted to become a marine biologist.” It was weird to me because there was an aquarium 1 block away & the ocean another block away. So it seemed like a weird fun distraction to the reality that was close by.

i thought the big brother track was frank zappa. so embarrassed.

Mike Sin spun this same Mothers track earlier today. Getting my Zappa fix today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Gaylord Fields:

My concern is that it's not especially good form to toot your own horn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Nardo: That makes me feel I made a good choice, because Mike Sin is the real deal!
  6:51pm
