marmalade kitty, I'm assuming you meant "say it as it looks" in your first comment - so more like a rhyme with "get in," right?

@Robert - muhhumara (roasted red pepper, walnut, pomegranate molasses dip) - very delicious, making for a friend w. cancer.
  10:16pm
marmalade kitty:

cret in get in.. yup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- my understanding is etymology of 'cretin' is actually a contraction of 'Christian' - as an insult (sounds French-ish)...
  Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
12539:

@MK, same way you say Eton, as it sounds, right? :)
  10:19pm
Robert:

I take it the peppers are skinned after the roasting, because easier. What happens if the skins are left on? Too hard to mix? How about chopping before roasting, leaving skins on throughout? Or is your friend's condition such that the skins would be bad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm

...so hey i was just pointing out that there are always exceptions to the "rules" in english. (though, particularly in american english.)
. . . but here,the general rule is that when there's a double consonant after a vowel,the vowel is "short";when it's a single consonant,the vowel is "long".

I worked briefly at a nursing home with an actual medical cretin who proclaimed, "I'm a cretin." Poor thing. I'm supposing the medical meaning of cretinism to have been a relatively late development.
  11:32pm
Robert:

I tried to get her to say the names of 2-digit numbers, but it was beyond her. She could only say it was a [name of 1-digit numeral in tens place] "and" a [name of 1-digit numeral in ones place].
  Swag For Life Member 11:33pm

@Robert: Actually, the medical definition appears to be at the origin of the term as we know it.

  Swag For Life Member 11:40pm

@Robert, no, not like "mongoloid" - see www.etymonline.com... and en.wikipedia.org...
It seems to have entered the language as a medical term.
  11:43pm
Robert:

Thanks, 12359. That's what I used to think, but later doubted. The term does seem to be recent, though. I just imagined an older and less specific usage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
coelacanth:

-just curious,Robert. I've been acquainted with at least 1 person who was "severely retarded" (the accepted term at the time) who was usually quite happy, except if she was being challenged very hard.
  11:49pm
Robert:

Is not "retarded" (preceded by "mentally" or other applicable adverb, e.g. physically, developmentally, etc.) not still accepted when used precisely? It applies in any case normal development is held back.

But I know what you mean about being challenged very hard. This lady got upset at my attempts to get her to pronounce 2-dig. nos. I was activity dir. briefly at the nursing home, and couldn't figure out much else to do for/with her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Alex of Chicago:

Thanks for the shoutout, Evan. Great show as always.

The attempt to back-figure another etymology based on something like geography (Crete) makes sense given the use of some of Boeotian as an insult.

marmalade kitty:

People will go to any length, stop at nothing, to insult one another! sheesh!
lurklurk..definite goodnight x
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm

yeah Robert i know it's still a technically correct term,& shouldn't offend when it's not meant to; but some folks do get upset by the term, because they don't know that it's actually correct.
