Rana Ghose on Charanjit Singh and New Indie India

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

In India, independent DIY rock and electronic music-making are still very new. Rana Ghose of Delhi's REProduce Artists agency is a key player on India's growing indie scene. In addition to nurturing a bevy of young artists, he has a notable veteran on his roster: Charanjit Singh, the ex-Bollywood keyboardist who broke new ground with his early 80s electronic transformation of Indian classical music, Synthesizing - Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat. Rana is bringing Charanjit Singh to New York for performances on Sunday July 27th (Globalfest, at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors), and Saturday August 2nd (PS 1's Warm Up). He'll share Charanjit's story and music and introduce us to some of India's rising stars.

Good evening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Rob W:

northguineahills: The reissue generated a lot of interest, including lots of play on WFMU. We're going to play three more tracks from it during this hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Rob W:

Good evening MK!
Avatar 7:18pm dk:

if i recall, when the 10 Ragas reissue first came out, there were a lot of people dead convinced that it must actually be a recently-produced hoax -- it was just so far ahead of its time people just didn't believe it could be real. chanranjit's just that amazing.
  7:21pm marmalade kitty:

chanranjit's awesome!
Avatar 7:23pm dk:

it'd be interesting to hear classical versions of these ragas back-to-back against charanjit's take.
  7:24pm marmalade kitty:

Charanjit even
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Rob W:

dk - yes, a good idea... but I didn't prepare it! Plus the way ragas are normally played, they are usually a LOT longer.
Avatar 7:32pm dk:

well, the context you've given for the sound effects and so on helps a lot with understanding what he's doing.

i'm just amazed that, sitting smack between phuture's 'acid trax' and donna summer's 'i feel love', charanjit's basically the bridge to acid that nobody actually knew existed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm common:

yep hello
Avatar 7:36pm northguineahills:

Definitely hitting PS1 next week. Thanks for the heads up, Rob!
Avatar 7:41pm dk:

ooh, this earlier charanjit track is awesome.
  7:47pm KK in MK:

all of these Charanjit Singh tracks have been excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Rob W:

Thanks everyone...
Avatar 7:55pm dk:

  8:06pm marmalade kitty:

far out show.
I found one or two of Charanjits "10 ragas.." on youtube which are dated 1982.
Thanks as ever for bringin the tunes for us
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Rob W:

Thanks MK. I know this part is a little different from the usual thing for me, but wanted to give a little taste of this bit of India...
Avatar 8:10pm dk:

this audio pervert thing sounds like if peak-period peter gabriel was coming up today.
Avatar 8:14pm dk:

... not so much on this bappi lahiri rework, however.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Would you say overall that India~Bollywood prefigured (were they earlier) Sampling - or @ least Mash-Ups in this way ? I've had this thot before listening to this Program on other weeks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...off-topic or a tangent, maybe;
...'Mash-Up' by another name, maybe: just how one Culture naturally echoes another from a distance in its' own 'dialect'...
  8:30pm marmalade kitty:

I discovered a great north east geordie jazz quartet at manchesters annual jazz festival MJF; Zoe Gilby Quartet
I think it's the first time i've ever heard geordie scat :)
  8:40pm vanya moscow:
