Hello all! I am currently experiencing difficulties with the stream -- hopefully they won't be experienced on your end. May make it hard for me to comment today.... (Fingers crossed.)

Are you upstreaming without a paddle?
Greetings, Tony, Listener James, DCE, Doug, fellow listeners!

did you say Fred Frith was in this group? or did I mishear?
Avatar 12:11pm
Tony Coulter:

Hello again, everybody! Still dealing with problems over here -- hopefully not for much longer.

@ DCE: Yes, Frith was in this group....
Avatar 12:11pm
steve:

hey Tony and friends. 10 seconds in, i like where this is going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Rich in Washington:

This is great. I have woefully little of Skeleton Crew in my collection - mainly on compilations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
DCE:

yes, I can hear that now.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
listener james from westwood:

It's entirely new to me and I'm happy to make its acquaintance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
cklequ:

This is reminding me a track on this old Eugene Chadbourne record i used to have on constant rotation.

Come to think of it, Fred Frith may have made an appearance or two on that album.

Hola, Tapeheads
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm

good use of samples
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

OK -- things seem to be calming down on the technical difficulties front. So, greetings again, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
DCE:

you mean you got the tape back INTO the cassette, Tony?
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes! It was touch and go, but I managed to jam it in there.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
listener james from westwood:

There was probably a point at which scattered, shattered CDs overtook strands of discarded tape as the audio detritus one saw while creeping along a highway in heavy traffic. Now it's probably Microsoft Zunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
DCE:

this is really good!
Avatar 1:11pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: I used to see cassette tape hanging from trees -- can't get that with CDs.
Avatar 1:12pm
Tony Coulter:

@ DCE: Glad you like it! Their two studio albums are well worth seeking out.

Tony: Not hardly! Not unless you hang 'em as holiday ornaments!
Avatar 1:24pm

OK, nice to finally listen to some hiss after a long time gone.
Avatar 1:24pm
Tony Coulter:

Debile Menthol broke up way back in '84, but there were some excellent offshoots that were much more long-lived, like L'Ensemble Rayé and Nimal
Avatar 1:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya Carmichael!

Durn, it's still cutting out on me. Maybe you can re-run this episode, Sir Tony.

Me too, unfortunately.

yeah, I don't think anything is playing right now, actually

Regular stream for WFMU was also giving me grief when I experimentally tried that, too.
Avatar 1:31pm

I am awaiting word form central command, as the problem doesn't seem to be on my end.

MrFab:

Yes! But I had to close the Pop-up and open it again for it to play.
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

Ah, good. I think I will re-air this show at some point nonetheless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
Doug Schulkind:

If you re-start your iTunes or pop-up players, the show is still running on the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
Doug Schulkind:

Whatever problem is occurring, it is station-wide. People lost the audio for Joe Belock's show running over on the Mothership.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm

Yay! You're back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm

Our mighty Tech Buddha Jeff Moore is on the case. All praises to the TBJM!

Avatar 1:51pm
Tony Coulter:

Funny thing about these lo-fi live recordings -- if you listen to them long enough, the ear adjusts and they start to sound just fine (to moi, at least). That's one reason I decided to play all live recordings today.
Avatar 2:05pm
northguineahills:

@Tony: I just found some crappy mix tapes of mine from the 90s that baked in the sun and probably had drinks spilled on them, and except for the worst examples, they still sound ok by me.
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

That'll be my next show: Tapes drenched in soda or maybe cat piss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
Rich in Washington:

@Tony: the Missus and I were talking about that very thing: your brain becomes the filter/descrambler of less-than-optimal media. I grew up in a distant, rural area and television reception and sometimes radio was wretched. I have tapes that are virtually unlistenable today but my mind can filter and optimize it internally.
Avatar 2:16pm
Tony Coulter:

The only kind of sound I can't deal with is low-quality mp3's -- they hurt my ears, quite literally. They sort of create unpleasant vibrations in my inner ear. Other than that, I'm good.
  2:16pm
Dean:

The hi-fi/lo-fi theme here makes me think of Ward Marston, who has transcribed from 78s to digital numerous vocal recitals and operas from the turn of the 20th century. I wouldn't characterize the CDs as "hi-fi," but the sound is resplendent, not despite but because of the fidelity to the original media from which they were transcribed.
Avatar 2:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Many of those early 78s seem to capture vocals in a very lifelike way -- orchestras, not so much, maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm
Rich in Washington:

bad analog media doesn't seem to do that but, like you say, bad digital media seems really bad to my ears, too.
I wonder if youngsters who cut their teeth on Napster, etc. feel the same way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Rich in Washington:

Bad, lo-rez MP3s or other digital files give me this weird resonant vibrational feeling in my neckbones. I have no idea why.
Avatar 2:28pm
Tony Coulter:

Neckbones are the tuning forks of the soul, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
Doug Schulkind:

The neckbone is connected to the hissbone.
Avatar 2:38pm
Tony Coulter:

Just checked, and the club where this tape was recorded is still in business. So, next time you're in Poznan, remember to check out Nurt.
  2:39pm
Dean:

"Next time you're in Poznan, remember to check out Nurt." If I had a nickel for every time I was given that advice...
Avatar 2:40pm
Tony Coulter:

... you'd be five cents richer?
  2:40pm
Dean:

More cowbell?
Avatar 2:54pm
Ike:

Cool show, at least the parts where the stream wasn't cutting out. (Also had a bit of trouble towards the end of Trouble's show.) Maybe you could rerun those tapes eventually.
Avatar 2:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey Ike! I think I will do just that....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:01pm

Many thanks, Tony, for the Tuesday hissage!
Avatar 3:02pm

Thanks Tony, another great tape hiss!

Many thanks for tuning in, everyone -- see you next time!
