Hi, Gaylord and folks on board! All I could ever wish for anyone weather-wise is what we've enjoyed here in SO IN the past 18 hours. In a word, glorious.
Of course, we are earnestly hoping to move from the area, but if still stuck here, you *will* meet up with us for a beer or whatever poison's your pleasure. Martini included.
Ha! Yes, I know what "natch" means -- I was asking *why* is it natural you'd like Eero??
...Screamin'LordSutch will always be Jack for me...he only killed five dames, & took out a few organs ? Worse things happen in BurgerKings *these* days...
...ahh...FMU SundayEve...I have rum
...oh - Hi everybody !...
I was thinking this was just for you, glenn. Too left for you, eh? Maybe we should exchange places, because Indiana is as right-red as you can get -- well, not exactly, but close enough.
@glenn: Our little exchange reminds me I got a polling call yesterday. She started by saying "would you answer a few questions about quality of life in Indiana?" I replied: You can write down that given our current governor and attorney general, quality of life in Indiana sucks, and thank you for calling at dinnertime. [click]
@steve: That's Ms. Humphrey and her soulful flautism for ya!
6:30pm
P-90:
@ Gaylord: And your Jedi apprentice Ms. Samantha hit another home run this morning. There are now more really good WFMU DJ's than there are slots to fill, to a greater degree than I can ever remember.
@P-90: I read Samantha's playlist, and I was gobsmacked! I can't wait to give it a proper listen! And when she becomes approved for daytime fill-ins, you better believe you'll find her here when I'm away!
P-90/pss: long seemed inevitable to me ! ; on other hand, just choosing between BodegaPop & main stream on Wed.P.M. already hard...I certainly haven't timeslots open for Archives or anything !!...
I loved the track from "Modern Chinese Folk Songs" earlier. The singer's name is actually Yang Hsien (楊弦). More info on this mid-70s LP is here: tiny.cc... .
...I know JulianCope later sorta denounced ScottWalker - but I always associate when heard...which for me is pleasant...
6:39pm
P-90:
@ RevRab:There's a point, you're right, multiple streams with competing live shows is an issue for listeners. The "embarrassment of riches" effect...
I'ts also already an issue with Shulkind, Uncle M., and Amanda. the archive is a digital-age godsend, but sometimes you kinda wanna listen live, it's part of the traditional radio "experience."
@Rob W: Thanks! I'll update the playlist to reflect that, and I'll make notes on my copy as to the various performers. (By the way, I enjoyed the group you had on yesterday, Bombay Rickey; the singer was appropriately operatic.)
...the Bombay Rickey singer left my jaw on the floor as soon as they hit their Swingin' Mozart thang !
...someone 'famously' quoted efd as saying Archives are like mixtapes w/ people talking
- but MaryWing made the point last night that you can FastForward & Skip & stuff...
@pss: I was smacked around when I was a brand newbie on the comments for dissing Rod Stewart. I was rather stunned a DJ would do that in a FREEFORMat. But OTOH, you can get "smacked around" for liking something -- like the flute -- on certain boards. ;)
@glenn: At least in your world, people have the excuse of not being Americans.
6:50pm
P-90:
I caught Bombay Rickey too, lot's of fun, very impressive.
Does anyone else find that some shows "work" well on archive, like podcasts or "mixtapes with patter"?
For example, Rex's show works great for me as a pre-recorded package of bon-bons, while Dave the Spazz does something very similar, but it's got more of a Murray the K/Wolfman Jack vibe, something you want to share live, as it's happening.
@kat330 - I wasn't really "smacked around" by UM -- he's a friend -- although I did cause some trouble on another show that clearly wasn't meant for me by ranting about Katy Perry.
Cool or uncool isn't quite what the issue is with Stewart, but I certainly figured *every*one is entitled to have an opinion without being piled on. Seems to run against the Freeform model. Now, being needlessly rude about anything goes beyond, but just saying "don't care for," it certainly should not be discouraged (which I think it is in general).
@pss: Yeah, I know you didn't mean in any serious way. But since that early experience of mine, I've felt a constraint that I don't think a listener -- a donator esp. -- should have to worry about.
And again the Stewart love comes out. I get it -- most of you love him! I just happen not to. :)
I do think there's a difference is saying one doesn't care for Rod Stewart and one doesn't care for Scott Walker -- in the WFMU universe. Whether that difference is bad is immaterial to me right now, but there is a difference.
...Rod is a fantastic singer who - @ various times - has had Tastes I relate to more or less
...which brings us to the question of Mainstream Pop / 'The Hits' (taped a Hollies CD called 'Not the Hits Again!' - & that title stays w/ me...) & how that relates to FreeForm Culture - & Community as it is right here...

@glenn - I kinda liked that painter dude as The Ripper, even though he was probably just a Victorian troll.
