MrFab:

This tape is nicely Residents-y.

The Question Of The Day: When (and why) did The Residents jump the shark? I suggest after 'Stars & Hank Forever' in '86, afterwards they seem to have lost their sense of humor, and became overly reliant on routine synth sounds. Prove me wrong!
Avatar 1:00pm
still b/p:

For no graspable reason, it struck me right away that "Was your Thai food robot-tested?" would fit nicely in the lyric meter of Eno's song, Miss Shapiro.
Avatar 1:00pm
Tony Coulter:

@ MrFab: For me, the Residential rot had already set in by "George & James." They got lazy -- and too reliant on samplers.
Avatar 1:09pm

pretty cool stuff here, Tony
Avatar 1:28pm
Tony Coulter:

So, next week's program will a special themed show -- but it's kind of hard for me to put the theme in words. Everything will be from the '80s (with an occasional late '70s outlier) and will be from the U.S. There will be lots of new wave and some power pop. It'll be heavy on self-released and regional/small-label stuff.
Avatar 1:28pm
Tony Coulter:

@ DCE: Glad you approve!!

Rev. Turnip Druid:

I'm with Tony on the Residential Rot. The American Composer Series felt like a disposable basement-tapes project. I'll take anything up to that point. My first exposure to their sound was Eskimo, so that has a special place in my heart valves.

I have close comrades that swear it's all good up to the elvis record, but that one really didn't work on me ay-tall.

However: 'not available' is one of the finest works of all humankind.

@Rich - that sounds right. The tide pulled away gradually after that point. I did dig the mole show "extraneous" ep (intermission) but that's about it on the timeline, i think..
Avatar 1:39pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Yeah, I'm sure departing members had a lot to do with the decline as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
Rich in Washington:

I think sometimes concepts just have a halflife of their own. I have to say, some of the Residents recent instrumental albums are quite nice on their own. Nothing spectacular, but nice and interesting listening. I can't really follow their proper albums, really. The storyteller stuff. I think it's kind of worn out.

whoa, that flute line was right off "children of the sun" from the 2nd hawkwind record. Nice flashbacky.
Avatar 1:50pm
Tony Coulter:

The funny thing about a tape like this, if this had come out on vinyl when it was recorded (mid-'70s), say on Brain or sumpin', it'd probably be fairly well known and appreciated. Being on cassette, it pretty much vanished without a trace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm

MrFab:

One reason I pushed the golden age to '86 was the "Kaw-Liga" 12" that used MJ's "Billie Jean" beat, one of the first mashups I ever heard. i'm sure that must have had some kind of impact on me.

Tony, perhaps the concept for next week's show can be boiled down to: "DIY New Wave"? One of my fave genres, so really looking forward to that one.
Avatar 1:55pm
Tony Coulter:

@ MrFab: Yeah, that is kind of the concept of next week's show -- except there will also be a smattering of power pop, and a wee bit of failed major-label new wave. Nothing avant or harsh, though -- just fun in the '80s sun.

Too bad we never got Herbert to opine on the GIF/GIF pronunciation debate.
@Santos: I owe myself a viddy at the Jodorowsky film for sure. I have a soft spot for the baroque mess that is the Lynch film. Plus we'll never see another sci-fi film with that many practical (vs. CGI) effects again.

Many thanks, Tony; looking fwd to the Oct specials!
