Favoriting October 21, 2014: Little Record, Big Hole
Singles Going Steady week is back on WFMU. It happens every October, during our Silent Fundraiser, and is a celebration of those little records with the big hole, 7" singles.

The first records I remember encountering were 45 RPM singles owned by my mother and my sisters. I inherited some of them but they tend to be in terrible shape because the sleeves long ago went missing (my sisters, in a common practice, discarded the sleeves and transported the records stacked in a carrier).

Some people feel the 7" single is the perfect audio format. Fairly portable, one song per side (usually); massive sonic signature (wide grooves) and (sometimes) a great picture sleeve: there's a reason why hit singles continue to rule the music charts, even if 45s are only being produced by a handful of companies these days, like our friends at Norton Records.

I never specifically collected 45s, though I do remember being handed quite a few by friends in bands, back in the day (some years ago I sold my copy of the Heart Attack single for almost four figures). I was going to spin some of those tonight, along with recently acquired 45s of a more bizarre nature: singles manufactured for use with a portable electronic game caller. But I left them all in a WFMU tote bag at work (there was a moment of sheer panic when I thought I left them on the bus!). So I'm calling an audible and making a last minute switch: let's talk about being single, about going steady and how you know he or she is "the one". Please call 201-209-WFMU and tell me about your new love. I'll also play some of the pre-Nico show music, German versions of 60's pop songs.

i like sally and laura from the dick van dyke show. sally's voice sounds like she smokes a cigar and drinks a cup of kerosene just to wake up.

Lewis:

please tell me you left them in the office and didn't loose them!

Hi Chris. I'm home sick and loving hearing you live for a change. Love your show. Hi dale and Lewis

hi Rachel - hope you are feeling better soon

Marcel M:

Oh man I know that feeling. Left a guitar behind at a gig. Brought two along and wasn't used to carrying two and missed it during the idiot check. Thankfully my friend was still at the bar an hour after we left and no one had taken it. It was the most expensive guitar I had bought at that time so I was freaked.

dale:

have some drambuie raechel - whatever you have you'll feel better.

t_J:

It's such a bummer.. I always had distractions like that naturally

dale:

i have a nick cave and shane macgowan cassette single of them covering louis armstrong's 'what a wonderful world.' i should toss it up on ebay for giggles.

Caryn:

You know, the only 7" singles I have are the ones I've won during WFMU Marathons. I'm more into albums. Relatives have so many singles, I'll probably end up with them at some point anyway.

People buy 45s people JEEEZUS!

honor blackman played herra in the jason and the argonauts movie and she was truly a goddess.

Oh no... he called it... VINYL!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Marcel M:

Chris there are like 1,000 cool record stores in NYC......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Marcel M:

Don't have to go to Urban.
Avatar 6:25pm
t_J:

I used to call it as well but appreciate the correction and agree with it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
dale:

salvation army and goodwill were the best record stores, but how many copies of the smothers brothers live at the green onion do you need?
Avatar 6:27pm
Caryn:

I think if you just refer to the recording format (be it a single, EP or album), referring to vinyl is okay. But never call an individual vinyl record "a vinyl".
  6:28pm
Raechel:

Thanks everybody! I feel better already but I still might try the Drambuie cure dale. This and Hearty White are my favs so it's kind of nice being home sick tonight.
Avatar 6:28pm
Caryn:

@dale: ooh, I wouldn't mind a copy of that. Our SA stores obviously don't have the same quality of records on sale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
dale:

this guy sounds like he was on diane's kamikaze fun machine.
Avatar 6:29pm
t_J:

what about all the record usage for decor, as a listener collector that gives me dubious feelings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Marcel M:

John Zorn is pretty much the only actually FAMOUS recent Avant Garde musician so its probably him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Marcel M:

That annoys me too t_J
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
dale:

caryn - it's on youtube. can be (ahem) borrowed from there. unless you meant the smothers brothers, but that's probably up there too
Avatar 6:32pm
Caryn:

@dale: I did mean the Smothers Brothers. Seriously, compared to the records the local SA store has, that's really high quality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
Marcel M:

So I think at some point people started referring to CDs as records. So people started calling them vinyl. Not really sure what it has to do with being, "hipster."
Avatar 6:34pm
t_J:

you should have a special record bag to carry.. even tough it was an occasional spinning it's a must for every record collector owner, but sleep deprivation can surely reduce your presence awareness
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
dale:

chris - my wife threw out her no means no tee shirt, but thankfully kept her flipper tee from the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
dale:

caryn - the salvay here barely has any records anymore. i don't know if it's a generational thing but i just don't think things like records get donated any more.
Avatar 6:40pm
t_J:

try watching Psychic TV full show on youtube .. good healing vibes as well Raechel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Marcel M:

I had left it in the band "back room." So not as bad as that! But was still stupid for sure.
Avatar 6:43pm
Caryn:

@dale: yeah, donations are quite rare. The most common means that records make their way to SA and such is when a dead person's possessions are all donated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
Marcel M:

87 SG Standard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm

Yeah Les Paul also said, "Lets make em' gold so it looks fancy!" He pretended that he invented it till the day he died... I still think hes awesome don't get me wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Marcel M:

Thanks Chris! Enjoyed the show even though you forgot the 45s! Do it next week! Screw it! Bye all.
  6:58pm
Raechel:

Good show Chris. Goodnight to everybody on the comment list!
  6:58pm
P-90:

"I'm picturing......a Gisbson, some sort of ES 335--- a tobacco sunburst ES 335,,,? " If there was still such a thing as "nightclub acts", you could do a "Chris T.: Guitar Psychic" act.
...and the SG is not "way, way, way off", it's still a Gibson, a not-too distant cousin of the ES 335.
Hey Chris, I'm really glad you got separated from your 45's, the show you improvised in their place was very enjoyable. "See" you next week.
Avatar 6:59pm

Bye, everyone! Bye, guitar psychic Chris!

Zats...I was away for a moment and missed the fate of the record bag. I guess I'll need to check the archive.

OH MAN! I feel your pain re lost (or stolen) records...that stings. Sorry for your loss.
  4:58pm

Or your *ALMOST* loss.
