Xylouris-White - New Dimensions in Drum and (Cretan) Lute

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

George Xylouris, brilliant laouto (lute) player from the Greek island of Crete, and Jim White, visionary drummer with Australia's Dirty Three among others, have joined forces. On their debut album Goats (Other Music), Xylouris-White deftly deconstruct traditional style songs from Crete as well as taking off on fully modern improvisatory journeys. Hear the full dynamic range of Xylouris-White live tonight on WFMU!

Xylouris White play their last NY show of the current tour this Thursday (Nov 6), 8 pm, at Berg'n Restaurant, 899 Bergen St in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. After that they head off to Western Europe for dates in November and December. Tour dates at the bottom of their Other Music label page, here.

i'm a pretty huge dirty three fan, so it's great to hear jim white working in another context. he seems like a bit of an under-acknowledged genius.

also, this final xylouris-white song is just perfect. love it.

We Brits always seem to hit Greece in the summer time suffering from seasonal affected disorder, just for some sun! But I hear the best time to visit is in November when the flowers come out all over the mountains and pleins!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Rob W:

Thanks Dennis! MK - Katie and I were last in Greece in October (2012) actually and you'd think I'd remember but I don't remember if the flowers were in full force yet!

Ace Mr. Weisberg ! - As Ever ☆
- every track rewarding & Live performers always a true Treat ( - & no Tricks !)

...random reflections re Xylouris-White ;
- Pretty sure what he was saying about Tuning was it's like a Violin : the lowest strings *in tone* on a Guitar in standard tuning - EADG - in reverse order - GDAE ;
...it can be confusing to say 'low' or 'high' because that could mean in Tone or in Location on the neck !
Dirty Three features Violin, of course, so that's an obvious connection. I'm pretty sure I've heard Yardbirds riffs in their stuff - which makes it a small world as far as *my* 'background' !...
...W/ the Course of strings on the laouto - it can remind somewhat of a 12-string guitar. When paired w/ a 'Rawk' drummer - I can't help but think of the Byrds - & they of course were influenced by Shankar & Coltrane (notably influenced by Shankar & Babatunde himself anyhow) & all manner of things, & instrumental in ushering in Psychedelia & improvisational & modal elements into Rawk : not so far from this !
...I have a Smithsonian CD of what I suppose is their best guess about Ancient Greek Music : the approach to Scales & Timbres is pretty different form what we are generally used to now : it sounds sort of stereotypically 'Ancient Egyptian' (to my untrained ear anyhow)
- altho' Crete was & probably is distinct from Greece anyhow...They both of course have immensely deep & Ancient Mystical Ritual Traditions that involved Music & Dance ; not sure how that relates precisely ! - but crosses my mind hearing this rich & evocative Music w/ somewhat minimal instrumentation of one drummer & one stringed player...
