Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
...1st chord uh wunna those I thot for sure we were in for BigStar 'SeptemberGurls'...:
- Intros that sound like other Intros (& make you think another song is coming) - a Thing - ?? ...nevermind...
...Like this !! : Identical tune to 'Zoot Suit' by the High Numbers (TheWh♂ ) - ?!???...
...& someone needs to finally address & articulate the notion of some Indian interpretations of WesternPop/Rawk as being the Original 'MashUps' (in quotes)...
Someone could make a whole Thesis out of The Beatles & India's effects & influences on each other ; I would even get all Joseph Campbell & start w/ comparing TheBeatles & the Myth of Krishna (a naughty Holy youngster - turning on all those Gopis @ once w/ his Music...)
...& the guy who did 'How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin' : www.youtube.com...
- could do the film doc as a follow-up !...
@RR Thanks for the YT link -- too long to check out during the show, but looks intriguing! Just put up a quickie video for a Kat-Kover yesterday, it's not the work I put into her "Black Crow Blues," but it fits the music... www.youtube.com...
@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: The High Numbers' "Zoot Suit" is a 100% steal off a song by the Detroit R&B group the Dynamics called "Misery." The New Piccadillys cover the original (which is a FANTASTIC song) -- I play it whenever I DJ out!
...The (mostly I guess?) British ripoff of R&B right then was a bit like alluding to Classical music in Rawk in later eras: just knowing anything about it - whatsoever - was like being some kind of Occultist @ that point...Actual Credit was for later
...& - quite obviously - just damn convenient in Business terms (nudge nudge)...
Very quiet here, rainy and cold so I had eight or nine kids and turned the lights off at 6:45. Got stuck with quite a few lobster claws as a result. Can I UPS you the remainder? They're uncooked:-P
Today's APOD is a beautiful celestial painting. Although Epimetheus kind of looks like a supermassive booger Jim Carrey (as Matthew Mahogany) might roll between his fingers in a Lincoln ad.
@Sem: Noooooo! We also had a blustery cold evening, but we managed to unload ALL our 50+ baggies of candy. True, we gave them out by the fistfuls, but at least they're gone.
@kat: lucky kids, that's the spirit. Didn't really give lobster claws, but some kind of gummi zombie dreck, serious junk food, and just nasty. Weather probably saved a few lives:-)
- credit to the Stones from the very earliest start (?) for being Champions of the Blues Roots & crediting where due (...so - who will prove me wrong w/ an example here)...
...Loved the ☆s outta the entire 1st set GF Sir...
"Prince played Saturday Night Live last night at the request of host Chris Rock, doing one 8-minute medley of songs instead of two separate short performances during the show. Here's the whole performance:

@Sem: We had one adorable kid who politely took just one baggie, and I urged him to take more. He wouldn't though. Guess he'd been brought up well.
@Glenn: Aw. Jim's rubber and your glue -- like the kind on the back of P.O. stamps, like the kind bearing his supermassive mug -- and .. however else that goes.
Yeah, that too. But his art is like obnoxious because he deiced to get a “studio” in the West Village to be “bohemian” and then he created some subpar street art crap.
Not starting a thing here, but I have found it super curious how it's considered a major no-no to criticize music / singers on the FMU comments, but everything else is fair game to trash and harshly, too. Wonder why that is?
Kat, is anyone talking about someone who is a local actor or playwright on their way to something? Or are we talking about a millionaire Hollywood actor who can stink at every role yet still have a career?
@kat330: There's not a "pure" problem with criticism per se, but on the WFMU comment board, people tend to be very passionate about their musical likes and dislikes.
I'm not going to be drawn further into it. I just see a real hypocrisy in comments, and it's bothered me from the get-go. SOME people are allowed to trash musical artists with impunity. Others express their opinion -- without resorting to cruelty -- and get PILED on by the group. 'Nuf said and I got to tend to food in the kitchen.
...NewHampshuh here can claim AdamSandler (& GG Allin...& The Shaggs) ; I thot Carrey was right for 'Mask' - but I don't need more
- as was CameronD in I think 1st flick
- OMG! she looked...
- uh...we were saying - ??...
- oh! - Carrey was good as AndyKaufman! ; he's a good living CartoonCharacter
...it's up to the Directors & Writers & Casting turds & MoneyMen to give these people something that'll work for their particular potentials ! Otherwise - I can't blame them for grasping the biggest payout.
...Ellipses also imply just a Duration of Time Passing (which may or may not imply Subtextual Thot goin' on): a thing I would like to be able to convey:..., ..., ...
(people go for [crickets])...I kinda think like a Musician...or something...
Just walking out the door to see Todd Rundgren at B.B. Kings. On Friday night on Long Island he covered "Muskrat Love".Hoping for more weirdness tonight.
@kat330: Life is not black & white. And there’s shades of grey to all interactions. If Jim Carrey’s ego was bruised by my comments, I will gladly buy him lunch on my dime.
Carrey was fine in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (and a few others), so was Adam Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love. Matthew Mahogany has been on a good streak despite being horrible in horrible films for years.
@Philo Exactly. Those two movies & roles I respect. But I respect performances & roles. I do not lionize stars as if they are Gods that walk amongst us.
...similar things about Robin Williams - whose Improv skills were enuff for me !
- but - I'm not actually nutty into Cinema like I am Music. So - I recuse myself @ a point.
I liked Robin Williams to a point, but I don’t trip over myself to just see a… THING… because Robin Williams is in it. That kind of fandom I don’t get.
Being quiet & introverted I find people like Carrey and Williams astounding. I mean I'll watch a Bergman or a Fellini film over anything any of them has done ever, any day, but it's a talent completely alien to me and as such highly interesting. In small doses.
I lived in Santa Barbara in SoCal a long while - & it gives you that sort of perspective on Celebrity & Class: your there, I'm here, you're Rich - I ain't - whatever. NYC I know not @ all - but it must be like that too.
- The other thing is the Market is all TopDown now - w/ everything (including Media) owned by a Few - who MarketTest everything into numbing banality
...Also: Tech has changed the nature of the Consumption: everything ever more sensationalistic (guns!! Car explosionsss!!) - & less reflective & accessible (instantly) - & then hence Disposable (preWar Wizard of Oz or KingKong being like actual Fairy Tales - another world altogether)...gripe & grumble...
Anyone been seeing Harry Shearer's Nixon tapes "show" on YouTube? We saw the first one last week but haven't gotten around to the newest one yet today.

I told my best friend I would give her $20 if she named any children she had Melody
- it's quite something Harry has to be able to inform about our grim world & & create & amuse all @ once like that...
@Gaylord : You're wonderful, you're impressive - everyone knows it, you know it.
- Apologies for being such a gabmonster tonight !...The last thing you wanna be is that person chattering over dinner while a great Jazzman plays, so to speak - altho' fun convo can be a testament to the Host if looked @ that way...
