I think I can now name two Taylor Swift songs. For me now, the ratio of media TS references encountered to identifiable songs is 600 to 2.

@VP: speaking of the NFL, the history of the Super Bowl half-time show is hilarious. George Burns once performed! Carol Channing has performed twice! The performing group with the most half-time shows under its belt? Up With People! Good grief, people!

@Rev. TD: true, but if we'd stopped after Channing, there wouldn't have been a Prince half-time show, and Kurt would not be happy. Or Edward James Olmos narrating a half-time show about the "Tapestry of Nations". Or the Indiana Jones-themed half-time show. Come on, those last two sound like must-sees!

And if we'd stopped after the first Channing show, we wouldn't have gotten the second one, which was a tribute to Louis Armstrong with Ella Fitzgerald and Al Hirt. I just want to know what those 3 did...

I'm not a huge Taylor Swift fan, but I salute her for having the business acumen from a young age to hang on to her song rights and actively manage how her music is distributed and marketed. Managing to make a living in music, do what you want, and also not have all your money stolen through bad business deals, shady managers etc. is a good thing, considering the long history of bands, singers and songwriters who are good at the music bit but don't understand the business side, and end up getting shafted as a result.

@Cecile: I think an actual tapestry might make for a more appetising line-up than the original Tapestry of Nations line-up was.

These half-time info bits weird me out. I never realised the U2 half-time show was supposed to be a 9/11 tribute.
And George Burns starring in a half-time show that starts with "Ghost Riders in the Sky" and ends with "When You Wish Upon a Star"? Ooo-kay...
The Indiana Jones half-time show starred Miami Sound Machine, Tony Bennett and Patti Labelle? Whuh?

rothwell nailed it. From Einbond's Wordpress page: "Texts, fragments, translations, and paraphrases — from Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, Matsuo Basho, and Douglas Huebler among others — come together with field recordings, solar data, internet searches, found objects, and vocal and instrumental samples from the performers themselves in a work that could be described by a term borrowed from concrete poetry: verbivocovisual."
