THE ORDER:
HERBERT M. SCHULKIND: First Lieutenant, Field Artillery, United States Army, for gallantry in action in Germany on 19 September 1944. While acting as a forward observer, the enemy launched a counter attack against the unit with which First Lieutenant Schulkind was observing. First Lieutenant Schulkind, in spite of enemy fire and danger from exploding ammunition in a nearby burning half track, took a position under direct observation of the enemy and directed artillery fire on them. So effective was the combined tank and artillery fire directed that the enemy counter attack was completely routed. The action of First Lieutenant Schulkind reflects the highest traditions of the military service." — BY COMMAND OF MAJOR GENERAL LUNSFORD E. OLIVER

I do have difficulty with the correctness of poppy wearing over here. It is a gesture though.
Would we have been so brave as these men, I like to think so.

Avatar 5:51pm annie:

i'm racking my brain.. i think there's a knock knock joke involved
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Gary:

I had a joke earlier, but Ar musta mistice.

See, that's why I try to avoid pun time here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Doug Schulkind:

When you find it, Annie, it will be the pun to end all puns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Gary:

Knock knock.

Avatar 5:58pm annie:

a fellow was asked to sweep up some papers under a desk. his bos was pretty tough and so he did his best to get them all; getting down on his knees and reaching for them all, in among the dust bunnies. when he was finished he stood up and called the boss in to check his work. the boss took a flash light and ran it under into the darkness. he swiftly pulled out a stray sheet. the poor worker replied oh, my armistice!!"

Howdy, Doug and all! Saluting 1st Lt. Schulkind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Jeff Golick:

Hi!

Gallantry in action! That's a fine legacy, Doug. To Brian's comment above, I fear terribly that I would not have been as brave. (I feel similarly about the glory years of the Civil Rights Movement.)
Avatar 6:04pm Carmichael:

Good day, vets and others.
Avatar 6:05pm Matt from Springfield:

And amazing citation for your (Dad, I presume?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Doug Schulkind:

G'day to you Carmichael and Matt from Springfield!

Yes, my dear father. I wrote a story about the story of my father receiving the Silver Star, here: blog.wfmu.org...
Avatar 6:11pm ndbob:

wow Doug!
Avatar 6:13pm Matt from Springfield:

It's also on the Hall of Valor website, the most comprehensive listing of high military honors awarded:
projects.militarytimes.com...

But it's "unconfirmed", needing a citation - you could send them a copy and get it confirmed! The order's text will then appear on that webpage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from Springfield
I emailed that website earlier today with a photo of the Silver Star order signed by General Oliver
Avatar 6:17pm Carmichael:

Just realized my father earned a bronze star at Normandy. I never knew it until the VA paid for his headstone and stated it there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm davex:

Peace, everyone!
Avatar 6:19pm Matt from Springfield:

Excellent! I'm glad!

Also a nice story - with all the stories from your family, they could fill a book! (Despite not *actually* attending the March on Washington ;)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome, ngh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm davex:

Almeda surely remembered the original Armistice Day.
Avatar 6:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Sorry, "Ozark" gospel, Arkansas and all..

Wow, and she stopped singing THAT, because "no one wanted to hear it". Damn shame - when will humanity learn? When will humanity get some humanity in them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Almeda would have been 19 on Armistice Day.
Avatar 6:32pm Carmichael:

@Matt: good memory. Yes, I served in the USAF. Tons of fun ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Gary:

I thought this was something contemporary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm davex:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Jeff Golick:

My dad was Army during the Cold War. Gave my mother a scare when he was called to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis. She had visions of him wading ashore outside the glowing ruins of Havana and then not having a Bronx (and with it a girlfriend) to return to....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Doug Schulkind:

Big hugs to your dad and your mom, Listener James.
Avatar 6:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Cold War imagery, how long we lived with those fears.
Avatar 6:51pm ndbob:

indeed Matt - the Cuban Missile Crisis was fifth grade for me
Avatar 6:51pm Matt from Springfield:

Technically there hasn't been peace in Korea yet...

But music about that particular "police action" is pretty rare, glad Sister Rosetta contributed and you found this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Hard to rhyme with "police action."
Avatar 6:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Satis-faction? (Emphasis on the "Sateees")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Gary:

Whoa, really? Louis, Louis!
Avatar 6:55pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, didn't know Satchmo recorded this! And those backup girls provide an interesting contrast!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm davex:

Great cover - wow! And thanks, Doug, as always...
Avatar 6:57pm northguineahills:

Nice one, Doug! Peace out!
Avatar 6:57pm Matt from Springfield:

I was just in Berlin last month, went along the path where The Wall used to be. Totally unexpected, and a rare thing to happen in this era, but I like to think of that as a great monument to what can be possible.
