This Skip James song is amazing. (I admit to first having heard it in 'Ghost World'.)
  9:57pm
P-90:

Oh yeah, Some Skip James for Thanksgiving. There's always room in any mix for some Delta Blues, IMO
  10:01pm
HollyT:

D, I'm sure you must've read the story about Sherman Hemsley (George Jefferson) being a HUGE gong fan, and putting Daevid Allen up in his NY apt, and it being a total den of iniquity?
Avatar 10:01pm
Dave Mandl:

@Holly: Was that in Ghost World? I didn't remember.
  10:02pm
Eric the Half a Bee:

Saw Daevid w/Bill Laswell, New York Gong, at Kent State in the late '70s. Put THAT in your pipe and have yourself a cup of tea, eh, mate?
Avatar 10:02pm
Dave Mandl:

@Holly: Yes indeed. There are some really amazing stories about Sherman flying Daevid Allen out to Hollywood etc.
  10:02pm
HollyT:

Yes. It's sort of a major plot point, in fact.
  10:03pm
Carmichael:

@Holly, I also heard about that from other FMU jocks.
  10:03pm
HollyT:

@DM, you're right, it was Hollywood, not NY. And Sherman supposedly had an LSD lab in his basement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Someone said that if Son House was a spooky tree on a hill, & Skip James was an eerie wind, then Robert Johnson was that wind thru that tree.
  10:06pm
P-90:

@HollyT: I don't remember that from Ghost World either, but I am familiar with the exploits of my prog-fanatic brother Sherman H.
  10:07pm
HollyT:

@RevolutionRabbit, in that case, what I want to know is: who was the crow that coasted along the eerie wind to land in the spooky tree?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I also read someone asked why one would believe what Daevid Allen said about that & it was probably apocryphal - but it's better if it's not...

There's a scene from The Jeffersons where George Jefferson is grooving to a Nektar song!

Man, you guys need to watch GW again. Enid buys the record from Seymour on a whim. She finally listens to it weeks later, and it changes her life. It's quite an amazing scene. Anyone who's ever had that moment (as I'm sure we all have) of first hearing a song/artist and KNOWING you would never be quite the same again, will totally get it.

For my money, "Let it Bleed" is the most consistently brilliant of the top 3-4 Stones albums.
re: ">2%": So? It's a fuggin' holiday. This set, w/ the Stones and Faces, now this was REAL "free form" set, Son
  10:39pm
JakeGould:

“The band initially recorded the track called "Country Honk", in London in early March 1969. Brian Jones was present during these sessions and may have played on the first handful of takes and demos. It was his last recording session with the band. The song was transformed into the familiar electric, riff-based hit single "Honky Tonk Women" sometime in the spring of 1969, prior to Mick Taylor's joining the group.”
Avatar 10:40pm
Dave Mandl:

@P-90: Why, thanks.
  10:43pm
JakeGould:

“Richards has repeatedly stated that "Country Honk" is how "Honky Tonk Women" was originally written.” Sorry for my OCD on this, but I like it when there is evidence of positive creative growth in something familiar.

I'm not taking it for granted, because it's the first fireplace I've had since I was a boy, and it requires a lot of maintenance. Also, when the the blackout was over, I still had to go to work and do 7 hours worth of stuff in 5 hours.

I used to have a pile of fake logs with some transparent bits, and a flame-colored plastic thing behind the logs that lit up and rotated when you plugged it in. It was similar to a fire, except it wasn't warm and the motor made a whirring noise.
