December 2, 2014: Giving (Me A Headache) Tuesday
Today is Giving Tuesday. Did you know that? Good. I didn't either. We can be forgiven for not being aware of Giving Tuesday because it's a "tradition" that began two years ago. I heard about it for the first time yesterday. The idea is a noble one: we have a day when we give thanks, a day when we give gifts and now a day - the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving - when we give to charity. So cough it up, suckers!

i suggest that people give blood....doesnt take much time, and doesnt take any money at all. plus, if you do apheresis, you get to be hooked up to a machine that takes your blood a bit at a time, centrifuges and extracts what's needed, and returns your blood back to you! cool! (this takes longer). many people need all kinds of "blood products" all the time..
i also give bucks to transportation alternatives (rational transit advocacy)and the aclu, despite their dodgy/ambivalent stance on campaign financing.

apparently, gay men (or any man who has had sex with another man in the last twelve months) are not allowed to donate blood.
which is an unfortunate, archaic hold-over from the AIDS-scare era, i would think.
but recently there was an editorial abt this issue in the times, so maybe there's a change coming.
