@RevRabbit -- I have listened to it a couple of times, yes! Very surreal to me to hear Skinner talk social commentary (which is I'm sure not what Shearer would want to hear, but still!)

The McBain saga!
  12:56pm
P-90:

I go so far back, I remember when Harry Shearer was in a "Firesign Theater"-style comedy group (along with Lenny and Squiggy!) called The Credibility Gap, which put out a couple of records in the seventies. And Shearer had a long-running bit on KCRW about George H. W. Bush dictating notes for his memoirs. "Two Bad Neighbors," when the Bushes move in next door, was partially created to capitalize on Shearer's long-term experience doing that "character."
Also, in L.A., the local free weekly paper carried "Life in Hell", the Groening comic which directly begat The Simpsons. Overnight, this local underground comic dude was suddenly on the Tracy Ullman show with animated sketches, then BOOM! the Big Time.

Also, there was a chain of "Long John Silver's" greasy fast-seafood restaurants in the suburbs (which had dopey "all-you-can eat' promotions). Yes, i remember Captain D's too. But Long John Silver's had the weird fish nets, fiberglass ship's steering wheels, Triton pitchforks, starfish embedded in the acrylic tabletops, light fixtures that looked like old nautical oil-lamps, all that kitschy deco. I believe they also had TV commercials for years with an actor doing the whole pirate bit: "Aaargh, two-for-one seafood platters all weekend long, avast ye mateys!" He was basically a less-bitter Capt. McAllister, their "Ronald McDonald"-like figurehead.

P-90:

@listener james: It's fascinating to see how the voices evolve; often these cartoon voices start with a strong element of an impression of a famous voice, then they become their own thing over time. Homer himself started as much more of a straight Walter Matthau voice. Somewhere there's a clip of the late Phil Hartman discussing this process on a Conan talk show. He had just created a bunch of voices for a syndicated "Dennis the Menace" show.
  1:52pm
sugarwolf:

@Amanda haha yes to Sassy magazine generation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
