The Koliadnyky perform ancient winter ritual songs from the Carpathian mountains of Western Ukraine. It's a tradition that pre-dates Christianity and the songs are believed to have special powers. Today they're joined by special guest, acclaimed champion of the Ukrainian bandura, Juliian Kytasty.
The musicians are in New York for several upcoming musical and theatrical performances:
Tomorrow, Sunday December 21st: The Koliadnyky lead a workshop in Koliada songs organized by Ukrainian Village Voices at
All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church 206 E 11th St, New York. 4:30 until 6:30 pm. If you want to go,
RSVP to UkrainianVillageVoices AT gmail DOT com.
Tuesday, December 23rd: Koliadnyky perform at La Mama Galleria, 47 Great Jones Street at the opening of Volodymyr Klyuzko’s “Carpathian Photo Patterns” (which runs through January 4th).
Next weekend (December 27-28) Koliadnyky perform with Yara Arts Group in the performance piece Winter Light at La Mama Theatre, 66 East 4th St. Show times are 3 pm and 8 pm Saturday and 2 pm Sunday.
Big thanks to Virlana Tkacz of Yara Arts Group for making this happen. Find our more at http://www.brama.com/yara/.
Big thanks to our illustrious engineer Mark Koch and assistant Serge Zbrizher!
ALSO tonight: After the Koliadnyky session, we have something else from Western Ukraine:
A portion of Khroniky, an experimental folk opera recorded in the region by Sholto Dobie and Lucia Nimcova.
As Sholto describes it, "Khroniky begins as an attempt to present a contemporary chronicle of everyday life in the context of Ukraine's contested and unstable situation, both currently and historically. But rather than the overarching narratives of mainstream media, the folkopera, navigates songs and stories told in kitchens, workplaces and parties, in a polyphony of subjectivities."
You can follow along with this English Translation of tonight's selection from Khroniky:
