What time is it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Par-tay time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Gary:

I believe it's spelled Par-TAY
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Doug Schulkind:

I defer to you, gaRY.

evening Doug, Gary, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello, ndbob!

Howdy, Doug and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Hidey hidey hidey ho, Listener James!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm listener james from westwood:

Ooh, you remind me of one of my favorite New Year's Eve parties, featuring among other things "The Blues Brothers" and lots of piƱa coladas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Doug Schulkind:

What could go wrong, amirite, Listener James?!
Avatar 6:07pm ndbob:

Heya James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Doug Schulkind:

I once talked on the phone with Slide Hampton. An elegant gentleman. An impeccable stylist. (And that was just his phone manners. He was a helluva trombonist, too.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Doug Schulkind:

This is one of the most recorded songs in human history. It's crazy that Thelonious Monk was essentially cheated out 2/3 of the royalties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Doug Schulkind:

The late, great Raphe Malik on trumpet here. This was recorded at Sam Rivers' loft Studio Rivbea in '72.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Gary:

Wow, just read the Wikipedia page for the song. I didn't know most of it, but I especially didn't know about the "versions" that Emanuele Arciuli commissioned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Like Malik, Jimmy Lyons died young. The both passed in their mid-50s. Bru tal.

I looked long and hard for the Frederic Rzewski version, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm davex:

Hey, it is indeed around midnight around here.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm listener james from westwood:

I'm of half a mind to shift my new year's celebration to my birthday, which is almost smack dab in the middle of the year. It's more meaningful to me than an artificial calendar and the weather's a lot less depressing. (The Southern Hemisphere really won the coin toss on 12/31 weather.)
Avatar 6:24pm Holly in NC:

How-DY from Hol-LY!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:25pm listener james from westwood:

Hello, ndbob, Gary, davex, and Holly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Doug Schulkind:

davex! Holly in NC! So glad you could come!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm davex:

Hey Doug, Holly, James, Gary....
Avatar 6:31pm ndbob:

Heya Holly and Dave!
Avatar 6:33pm Richard from Venezuela:

Happy New Year to Doug and listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Richard!! How have you been?!
Avatar 6:34pm Richard from Venezuela:

Good. Chillin' with this amazing set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
FYI, there is a video on YouTube of Emanuele Arciuli performing George Crumb's version.
Avatar 6:35pm northguineahills:

Howdy Doody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Doug Schulkind:

Enn Gee Aiche!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Doug Schulkind:

George Russell's arrangement here is so fantastic. Of course, anything with Eric Dolphy could be described as such.
Avatar 6:38pm Holly in NC:

I used to have a hard time reconciling Baden Powell with Sir. Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts. Seriously confused ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Doug Schulkind:

One was a repressed homosexual, the other wasn't. Do I even need to go further?
Avatar 6:40pm doca:

Hey guys, happy new year to all! I'm checking in late today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Happy old year, doca!
Avatar 6:41pm doca:

Oh I'm missing some Round About Midnight tunes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Doug Schulkind:

We're going a bit long this evening. There's no Kaminsky Kamoutsky toes to step on, at least.
Avatar 6:43pm doca:

@Holly: Baden Powell's father put this name on him because he was a fan of Sir. Robert Baden-Powell.
@Doug: Really? I was going to say you could do a show well over one hour of only Round About Midnight versions
Avatar 6:43pm northguineahills:

@Holly: As an Eagle Scout, I always had the same problem.
  6:45pm Carmichael:

Is it too late to give the drummer some?? I have been out doing constructive thongs, like getting drunk on my week off.
  6:45pm Carmichael:

Ha ha, "things" ....
Avatar 6:47pm doca:

docaca
Avatar 6:48pm northguineahills:

jaja, doca!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

@Carmichael
Constructive Thongs is rated XXX, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Gary:

Hey, wait -- I think I bought a CD by this guy at the WFMU record fair
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
For a long while, he was giving his stuff away online. Then he started selling it. Now some is even "out of print."
Avatar 6:52pm doca:

The boy's a merchandising wonder
Avatar 6:56pm ndbob:

I need to get going - excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm davex:

Thanks for rounding out my day, Doug! And good night everyone...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Doug Schulkind:

I could have filled six hours with version of this song and only been getting started. No self-respecting improvisor from the 1950s to the present day hasn't played 'Round Midnight at some point.

@davex
You square!
Avatar 6:57pm Holly in NC:

@ngh - Gold Award holdin' Girl Scout here ;-) (Eagle equivalent)
I remember watching a "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" contestant blow their chances by not knowing that that Juliette Low founded the US Girl Scouts in Savannah Georgia, and crying in frustration.

@doca - Seriously?! That's amazing!
Avatar 6:58pm northguineahills:

Super awesome happy New Year, y'all!

I knew it was founded in Savannah, but forgot the founder's name.
Avatar 6:59pm doca:

@Holly: Yeah it's not like they accidentally have the same name.
  6:59pm Carmichael:

Happy New Year was founded in Savannah?!?
Avatar 7:00pm doca:

@Doug: That Jimmy Lyons box set was released by Ayler in 1972 or recorded in 1972 and later released by Ayler?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Doug Schulkind:

So long, ndbob. Have a wonderful tomorrow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Let's get microtonal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Doug Schulkind:

@doca
The Jimmy Lyons performance from 1972 was never released until Ayler included it on their 5-CD boxed set a few years ago.
Avatar 7:03pm doca:

@Doug: Yeah stupid question, I was just thinking about the date over there. That Ayler box set is amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Doug Schulkind:

@doca
If you hunt around a bit, the Jimmy Lyons box set is downloadable...
Avatar 7:05pm doca:

Yeah I got it on soulseek a few years ago, then my external HD crashed and I lost all the jazz I've got (I have almost always to rely on illegal ways of getting music. Sorry)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Gary:

This is so beautiful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Doug Schulkind:

No apologies necessary in this corner of the Internet, doca.
Avatar 7:06pm doca:

@Doug: Do you remember or stumbled upon a blog called moneydown that put online whole discographies of free jazz musicians to download a few years ago?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

Thanks for another great evening Doug!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm listener james from westwood:

Love these single-song surveys. Thanks, Doug!! Happy New Year to anyone I don't happen to see tomorrow!
Avatar 7:07pm doca:

I love them too. Thanks, Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Doug Schulkind:

As always, my deepest pleasure!
Avatar 7:10pm Holly in NC:

Happy New Year all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Doug Schulkind:
