In Pennsylvania, workers have to be given 30-minute breaks before they reach six consecutive hours. And the meals breaks are unpaid. For an 8-hour shift, I am actually "at work" for 8.5 hours. Every minute I am working, I am being timed so they can see if I am moving fast enough. Maybe it is THEY who are doing the anthropological experiment, not me.

@Cecile. Bukowski actually wrote about that in Ham and Rye, and he wrote about incongruous time contraints at the post office... so there is really nothing new there. I think the real difference today is that they treat employees like simple robots with no expectation of working effectively outside a tightly defined regiment. That's why they bring in 3 cashiers for 2 hours during the peak instead of having a couple full time employees that can be shifted between departments.

I have had gator gumbo a few times, and got some gator meat nad cooked it plain, just to taste the difference. My verdict concurs with Cecile's: Somewhere between a chicken and a fish. Maybe with a little bit of pork in there too.
