@Joe, other D' combos I've seen more recently have thrown me for a loop (e.g., D'Brickashaw), but D'Angelo is also on various garden centers, delis, etc., in this area, so I got a boost by hearing their employees pronounce it for me. And now I want a submarine sandwich. :D

We're all gonna die! Just kidding . Well technically at some point we all gotta go , but this has been a test of the EBS. Back to the regularly scheduled happy thoughts. This never happened
Avatar 10:29am Marcel M:

Cursing on records is never something I considered. Until I realized the ONLY song WFMU hasn't played on my last record was the one with the F Bomb. It also happens to be my personal favorite on the record. So now, I'm conflicted.. DO I CHANGE MY ART TO WORK WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE FCC SO I CAN BE PLAYED ON WFMU?!??! It's a real moral dilema..
Avatar 10:29am Claw!:

Joe, you da illest.
Avatar 10:30am Cheri Pi:

Marcel, the trick is to edit out the F-bomb with a bicycle bell sound and send the "clean" version to WFMU.
Avatar 10:31am Marcel M:

Ahhh... but, I'd have to press a *clean* vinyl, cuz the vinyl is what really tempts those DJs to spin baby spin..

Avatar 10:58am Cecile:

Also, from the Bruno Mars album that has the awful Lazy SOng on it, there is a song called Treasure that totally channels the Whispers and EWF. The video looks like it was made for nine bucks in 1981. Good stuff.
Avatar 10:58am Claw!:

Here's hoping "Uptown Funk" ushers in a revival of this kind of stuff. America is long overdue for a heavy dose of this type of fhonk.
Avatar 10:59am Cecile:

You know, the funny thing is that almost none of it, from the Gap Band to Funkadelic crossed over to the top 40! Atomic Dog was one of the Michigan national anthems of 1983, and it was 99 on the pop charts.

Avatar 11:10am GeesyCreesy:

@Cecile: yo, just read that article you linked, and was pleased to read that I wasn't the only one who heard The Time. Nice find!

Charlie D is the redneck Ted Nugent, as far as I'm concerned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Ken From Hyde Park:

I remember hearing RCB in the cafeteria in college.
  11:32am Santos L Halper:

Ged's gonna sick the Necromancer on him too, and Charlie's gonna think he's going bald!

Hi Joe. Rossington-Collins left over from your Souther rock fest? And the Dreams cover earlier...looking forward to the next one.

@Ged. E. Lee This will irk you no end (a US comedian's rewrite of the Guess Who's "American Woman"): www.youtube.com...
Avatar 11:33am Roberto:

This is one of those songs that surfaced from time to time on 90s classic radio but without my knowing who the artist was. Now I know. Hooray for da internets and WFMU!
Avatar 11:33am bobdoesthings:

@carmichael - I thought Ted Nugent was the redneck Ted Nugent... no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am cory:

i agree w/ Carmichael. dude is only one step above David Allen Coe
  11:34am carolyn:

hey there, its James McMurtry you're playing, not Larry.... Larry is James' father.
Avatar 11:35am Joe McG:

Oops, thanks, carolyn! Wrong picture show!
Avatar 11:35am Roberto:

Classic Rock radio, that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Mister Dobalina:

I miss Roy Buchanan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Bronwyn Bishop:

Good old Kinky
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Lewis:

lovin' this set - takes me back to working on motorcycles in the garage as a teenager...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am listener james from westwood:

Didn't know Kinky was an Oxford man, now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am MD:

  11:38am Ged. E. Lee:

Rest assured as we three traveler cross the river mississippi and southward journey on in search of mr Dan'ls , only our thirst for freedom gives us hunger for vengeance. We shall kick his ass and abscond with his shiny fiddle made of gold.
Avatar 11:39am Hot Mess:

What a prince.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Lewis:

This is a very cool comp! Thanks to Light in the Attic!
  11:42am Mark:

What about when Kinky ran for governor?
Avatar 11:44am Sem Chumbo:

@Mark: never forget. Fill your boots:www.cafepress.ca...
  11:44am Mark:

When Charlie did that Devil Went Down to Georgia thingy (I used to hear it a lot, because my mom's Dodge Dart only had an AM radio in it), I always thought when him and the devil had that fiddle-off that the devil's part was way cooler and more bad-ass.
  11:45am Mark:

Could Kinky have possibly been worse than Rick Perry?
Avatar 11:45am Cecile:

no, he couldn't. not at all.
  11:46am Mark:

Charlie Tweddle sounds like a made-up name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Bronwyn Bishop:

I agree vis a vis the devil's fiddle solo, Mark. There's also a kickass accordion version wherein the devil's accordion solo is WAY better.
  11:47am Mark:

If I was playing a wicked accordion solo, I'm make sure I made one of them scrunched up heavy metal guitar solo faces.
  11:48am Brendan:

Thanks for always managing to play music we like and even music we didn't know we would like before we heard it if that makes sense, Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am doctorjazz:

Wow, haven't heard this in ages, beautiful tune, thanks.
  11:48am Mark:

Oh, and now a completely UNironic song. Haven't ever heard this Cowboy song on the radio. Would have never heard it except it was on the Duane Allman Anthology.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am DCE:

yeah, cool tune!
Avatar 11:49am slugluv1313:

what doctorjazz said! yes, so lovely! thank you, Joe!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am DCE:

of course I'm only familiar with Clapton's version
Avatar 11:50am Joe McG:

You bet, guys. Nice dobro from Duane. Full circle, sort of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am doctorjazz:

That's right, that's where I heard it, the Duane Allman anthology, great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Bronwyn Bishop:

Yay! Cool country cover of my favorite solo George tune
Avatar 11:51am Joe McG:

I like the first two Cowboy LPs quite a bit, very mellow and sweet, but also funny in spots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Mike East:

I've been working on the "Awaitin on you All" riff for weeks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am steve:

whoa! what a cool cover
Avatar 11:52am slugluv1313:

@ Mark & doctorjazz -- i am not sure if i ever even heard this version! i know it through Eric Clapton's "461 Ocean Boulevard" LP, HUGE when i was a teenager in the 1970s :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Mike East:

yeah, what steve said...seriously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am steve:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am DCE:

I'd like to think that the aliens when they get close will hear a lot of Beatles music. Maybe they'll think twice before vaporizing us!

Great show Joe !! thanks !!!
  11:56am Mark:

"Them are pretty towels, Porter." "But you cain't buy 'em. You can only get 'em in boxes of Breeze."
Yes, they'd stuff a bath towel in a box of laundry detergent as a promotion. Then hire Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton to hawk them on TV.
This I can remember, but I can't remember that it's parent-teacher conference night.
Avatar 11:57am βrian:

Thanks, Joe. Over to Charlie:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am doctorjazz:

I heard both versions, through the Duane anthology
Great end to the show
(was a teen in the 70's as well)
