@Lewis
Yes, I did a marathon premium a few years back called Jazz Burns Ken which attempted to demolish, in 70 short minutes, Ken Burn's ridiculous jazz jingoism.

Thanks Doug! Aloha James

I haven't seen the Burns Jazz, but I hear all bad things from good people. What are a few of its worst crimes and ideological sins?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

@FS
Burns uses Branford Marsalis to attack Cecil Taylor. And he uses Wynton Marsalis, Albert Murray and Stanley Crouch to attack pretty much everyone else who made creative music after 1960.
Avatar 10:52am ndbob:

I never saw the Burns documentary - largely based on comments by Doug and others
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

@FS
Burns relied on Wynton Marsalis to define "jazz" as a uniquely and exclusively American art form. One that somehow mirrors the idea of "Democracy" in it's egalitarian, collective creation. All the while, Burns/Marsalis trash any type of exploration that tried to break out of traditional forms and structures. It was a most vile imposition of small-minded orthodoxy. Completely missing the spirit of "jazz's" boundary pushing and the seeking of originality.
Avatar 10:56am Flash Strap:

ugh. that's sort of the Marsalis party line. boy, that series ended up shaping a lot of people's conception of jazz, too.
  10:58am Dean:

Perversely, I'm kinda pleased that the brothers Marsalis hold such provincial views, with which I don't agree. It suggests there's something worth fighting for in the musical arts. Both Wynton and Branford have made recordings I really enjoy. Branford's trio live in Bloomington is super. Why they'd be so committed to dissing other talents, I don't know, but the polemics can be refreshing. Crouch, on the other hand, writes really lame liner notes.

I was once strolling through a historical area of Sacramento with friend early one morning. Two guys were walking toward us. When we passed them, I realized one of them was Wynton. He's really short.
Avatar 10:58am Flash Strap:

on a happy note, this is one of the most-loved, most-played tracks in my home
Avatar 10:59am Lewis:

@Doug - I would add that boundary pushing is also central to Democracy. I have argued that the health of a culture is indicated by the extent to which fringes are strong...
  10:59am Dean:

You're channeling Madison, @Lewis.
Avatar 11:00am Flash Strap:

@ Lewis: yes!
Avatar 11:00am Lewis:

@Dean - glad I am in good company!
Avatar 11:01am Flash Strap:

ahhhhhhhhh yeah
"Baia, beautiful Baia"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

For me, the very best moment in the Burns film occurs in the very first episode and it is merely the presentation of one extraordinary still photograph. In a sort of modern pietà, Frankie Trumbauer is shown solemnly holding his C-melody saxophone in the most moving embrace. The instrument is his child. Amazing.
Avatar 11:07am ndbob:

wow I never knew any live albums were recorded here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

Years ago, I worked for a book publisher who had signed a contract with Stanley Crouch. I was likely going to be its editor, but Crouch never delivered the manuscript.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:15am listener james from westwood:

Thank you, I wondered if it had been Viers for the first 30 sec! Also quite lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Uncle Michael:

I don't see Branford as provincial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James
I don't go more than a week without listening to Ms. Veirs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Uncle Michael:

To me, it seems Wynton defines jazz as not just American, but specifically...almost exclusively...African-American, in its development.
  11:24am Dean:

Agreed re: Branford. Could have picked a better word, but even then Branford seems more chill, less uptight than Wynton about enforcing imaginary boundaries.
Avatar 11:25am glenn:

*slowly backs away from jazz argument, hopes baseball argument will begin soon*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Uncle Michael:

Yeah, Branford's been all about playing anything with anyone...Buckethead...Grateful Dead...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
We could talk about Russell Nathan Jeanson Coltrane Martin, Jr!
  11:27am Dean:

Branford even played with the Mets.
Avatar 11:27am glenn:

that's not an argument!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Mike East:

Wynton comes in here sometimes. I like him cuz he sets an example of gettin' PAID as a jazz musician. Brings up the standard and gives other jazz musicians a chance to earn closer to what they're worth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Gary:

I go off for a quick shower and you make with the awesome Polish music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

  11:30am Mr C:

It's unfair to lump Wynton and Branford together. They definitely don't think or speak as one.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:31am Brian in UK:

@Hugo bit late been doing the Rufus Thomas. Seen Lonnie Holley, William Parker, Mike Cooper at Cafe Oto. Great gig. Audiences in London are so rude and chatter. In Oto total respect. During one Marc Ribot acoustic concert they turned off the 'fridge behind the bar because it was too noisy.

I don't know if it's the Polanie song, but one of them towards the end sounded much like Bill Withers' "Use Me Up." The guitar and bass parts more than the vocals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Wow are you right! It's the Andrzej Zaucha track that is referencing the Bill Withers tune. No doubt. I am still pulling my hair out over the song that Polanie appears to be covering, however.
