So does Hampton Grease band sound like Beefheart or is it the other way around?
  12:48am
rw:

Never mind. Just looked it up. Beefheart was first. I did like that Hampton Grease band thing though.
  12:49am
rw:

And... Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51am
jj.:

hi, yeah, beefheart came first & probably influenced bruce hampton (who later became col. bruce hampton), and the grease band appear in the background on a zappa album around then (lumpy gravy, i think?). but bruce and the grease band had their own thing, too.

that Outsiders song was way cool.
  1:02am
rw:

Thanks jj. I'm guessing it's "We're Only in it for the Money". That's the one that looks like an inverted Sgt. Pepper.
  1:03am
dickscumrok:

Which country are they from? Theres like four different bands coming up on the web search thingamajigger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05am
jj.:

the outcasts? the country of kentucky, i believe. www.discogs.com...
  1:07am
dichardscumrok:

thank you sir
  1:09am
P-90:

I wouldn't call Hampton Grease descendants of Beefheart, they're more like contemporaries (whoever strictly "came first") but there's also a Bebop Jazz thing in there, and the vocals on "Halifax" do strikingly pre-incarnate Dave Thomas's Pere Ubu style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am
jj.:

yeah, descendants is the wrong word, but i think there's definitely some audible influence/inspiration/kinship there. funny you should mention ubu. when i put halifax on as dave hill was heading out, he asked if it was pere ubu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12am

in other news, col. bruce is apparently in a recent video by run the jewels. haven't watched/seen.

This is pretty much exactly what I was hoping to hear now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am
Tome:

this is nice
  1:22am
P-90:

Yeah, descendants was wrong, I was just saying it can be a mistake to conclude that an artist or band is strongly influenced by another artist or band just because they came a tad later and sound similar. In this case I think it's more like common influences among folks from the same generation. Dave H. said that? Huh.
