	5:15am Mark: No need to apologize ever for playing the Dead (or anything else). You'll never please everybody all the time, so the best thing to do is just follow your muse wherever that takes you (and us). I was listening to another show last week and I commented that the record they were playing made me think the neighbors upstairs were vacuuming. The DJ responded that he was sawing the turntable in half with a table saw. That's how you handle hecklers.

	5:17am Jeff Conklin: I don't hold it against anybody for not liking the Dead if they've given them a fair shot. And I didn't mean to give the impression that I was sorry for alienating anybody by playing the Dead because I'm not ;)
	♥ 5:18am coelacanth: the dead would have been good for many years after their first few (good) albums, had bob weir never existed. ...but even with his vacuous,bland-at-best input they did make a patchwork of excellent music almost through the 70s.

	5:25am the Canterbury wood-elf: @pierre Yeah, the Dead have a very different meaning within US culture (and subcultures) than they do in the UK, where no one knows much about them, and liking them doesn't come with a raft of associations and assumptions about yourself!
	5:30am pierre: @the Canterbury wood-elf: yeah, that's what I find absolutely fascinating about popular culture in general. You've said it very well, and very clearly. And one of the (many) things that WFMU has taught me, is that there is no shame, or no problem with liking whatever you would like to like. I know it sounds stupid, but when you go to places and you're surrounded by poseurs, it a breath of fresh air.
	♥ 5:33am coelacanth: pierre, i'm no authority- even with 30+ years association with the band & "dead culture"...but i do think a lot of the negative feeling toward the band is an extention of negative feeling toward the "deadheads"....and i do think "deadheads" represent shallowness,apathy,mindlessness,etc....and generally assuming the role of puppet.
	♥ 5:36am Sem Chumbo: Never got the whole Deadhead subtext, likely because I never read reviews or any opinion pieces. Just followed along with the music's evolution and took it as it came.

It's much easier now... @coelacanth Yeah, if you read the comments left for GD shows on archive.org (the great majority from self-defining "Deadheads"), it's generally quite depressing. I can't relate, despite sharing a love of the music. The WFMU comments board, contrastingly, is one of the most nuanced, civilised and enlivening online forums I'm aware of.
	♥ 5:47am coelacanth: Sem, i think if one takes in the grateful dead as one would any other band, & not be influenced by the "culture", it would be perceived differently. they were good musicians,for the most part- especially while pig pen was around. i own many 'dead albums (by non-deadhead standards) but- would i follow them ("tour" with them,as it's laughably phrased) around the country? NO! i actually have a life!...and i think that regarding of grateful dead "culture" as a religion,as deadheads do, is what repels most people.

If the quality resonates with those who experience it, the experience is satisfying. The difficulty for early adopters is that the initial experience can never be repeated. Both the musician and the listener are always changing, and, I think, change is anathema to being part of something. Good to see you here, btw:-)
