Mu Qian's Field Recordings: Music of Chinese Minorities

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Mu Qian is an ethnomusicologist, arts journalist, concert producer and all-around champion of roots music. He's a major player in China's small but growing multi-culti music scene: He curates China's first world music festival, World Music Shanghai. And he's director of Pentatonic Workshop, a Beijing-based non-profit that promotes and presents traditional and roots-inspired music from Asia and the Asian Diaspora to Chinese audiences. Mu Qian has traveled across China exploring the music of the country's ethnic minorities, and he'll share his musical discoveries on WFMU tonight.

What was the song just playing with the woman singing? Was that Luzmila Carpio? My mind is officially blown.
Avatar 6:52pm ifny:

I listened to the last set via my mobile and desktop simultaneously. There's a slightly greater micro lag on my mobile so they're syncopating quite nicely. It's quite the experience. I recommend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Rob W:

ifny, that was probably the Luzmila Carpio: remix track by El Remolon.
Avatar 7:13pm ifny:

@Rob W Thanks.

FASCINATING show, beautiful music -- thank you, Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Rob W:

Thanks slugluv
  7:52pm Hel:

Ditto Dave! Many thanks to Mr Mu QIan. Envisioning a musical collaboration with Wardruna in Norway, that would be excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Rob W:

Hel, you know there was a pretty amazing collaboration between Dong Chinese Singers and Norwegian musicians a few years ago - check out www.cdroots.com... .
  8:07pm Hel:

Thanks Rob. I did not know about that but not surprised as the Norwegian music, art and culture is extremely progressive. I'm not Norwegian- just half Danish and a huge fan of the Norwegian rock & metal music scene. Getting more into world & indigenous music thanks to you Rob.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Very interesting program tonight, Rob.
  8:20pm Hel:

Can't help but hear the ancient crossing of paths between these two cultures through this beautiful song. That was awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm KK:

I faved Mu Qian's recordings as much for the exposition as the songs themselves. It's weirdly validating to hear his perspectives on the commonalities of folk music, coming from a researcher. His description of the "Embroidering The Purse" tradition is really interesting to me - not just on a cultural level but it's also very pertinent to evolutionary biology; you can witness similar patterns of song variation in other musical animals and study how it affects survival and speciation. That's also interesting but not as fun. But anyway, really that whole segment was cool, great episode!
