Turtles can live a heckuva long time. My old Brooklyn landlord died in his early 60s and the turtle he had as a pet since he was a young kid outlived him.

Growing up, I rooted for the nearby University of Maryland sports teams. Their mascot is a terrapin. When any of the schools teams is doing well, the student body holds up "Fear the Turtle" signs at games.
