Favoriting March 10, 2015: Under Pressure Marathon Show w/MC Jim the Poet

Open "See You Next Tuesday!" in your browser.
Tonight: Under Pressure
WFMU's Fundraising Marathon is here and so is my first Marathon 2015 Show! Thanks to everyone who pledged pre-Marathon and thanks in advance to all of you who will call or go online to pledge during Aerial View. Your money will guarantee that WFMU remain the shining cultural resource it's been for more than fifty years. That's right, WFMU went on the air while Buddy Holly was still alive, April 24,1958. It wasn't always the freeform mecca you've come to know and love - that took ten years. But when 1967 rolled around so did the iconoclasts, led by Vin Scelsa and armed with LPs reeking of patchouli and skunk weed (for more, check out A Brief History of Freeform Radio from WFMU's now-defunct program guide Lowest Common Denominator and the accompanying Freeform Timeline). I'm proud to be part of what has become a tradition of freeform at WFMU, documented in the new film Sex & Broadcasting.

Jim the Poet of Sportsy Talk joins me tonight and he's bringing his balls (see below). What will we do with those, you're wondering?! Think Idiocracy and then tune in to find out!
If you've been enjoying this newsletter and the kickass radio show that accompanies it, please pledge by calling 800-989-WFMU or going to wfmu.org. And remember: you can also adopt me!
The Aerial View Premium this year - yours for a pledge of just $75 or more - is the 4th edition of the Aerial View lighter. This one has a beautiful goldtone finish and features the Chris T. "Ace Face" illustration by Two-Fisted Titan of Gusto Jack "Hot Wahini" Taylor. It'll look even better than this:
2015 Aerial View Lighter
I also have prizes to give away, including signed copies of two books from former Aerial View guests, Brad Tolinski's Light & Shade: Conversations With Jimmy Page and Tony Rettman's NYHC: New York Hardcore 1980 - 1990. (Click on either title, below, for more info.)
Tonight only you can also win the Krzysztof Kieslowski "Three Colors Trilogy" of films Blue, White & Red in a DVD Box set. But you can't be in the running if you don't pledge to Aerial View!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Fri. Mar. 13 the tables turn when I MC with Billy Jam on Put The Needle On The Record and with Rex on Fool's Paradise Sat., March 14.

On St. Patrick's Day, Tue., Mar. 17, Pseu Braun of Pseu's Thing With A Hook and the Pseu Braun Show will be my MC for my second Marathon 2015 show.

Last Week: Uncomfortably Numb
Last week's show was my favorite kind of Aerial View: a meaningful discussion of the way things are. We talked about happiness, numbness, the endless winter, popularity and much more. Admittedly, all of it was coming from my skewed vision. But it's my show, so a personal approach is to be expected.

Here are some playlist comments:
  • The pursuit of happiness merely for the sake of happiness is an empty and pointless enterprise. Also, Chris, you do have an underlying enthusiasm in your show. An enthusiasm to NOT PANDER!.
  • @Chris - I think you're doing a great job with the show as it is. Correct me if I'm wrong, or if its too personal, but didn't you recently have a death in your immediate family? After my father died, I was numb for years. It wasn't until pretty recently that I could make myself feel again.
  • I'm gonna call my autobiography "Upbeat and miserable"....
  • Marge tried to tell Lisa to do that, but then she realized it was wrong and told her to be her skeptical and negative self. A heartwarming moment.

Reasons to Support Aerial View
  1. Aerial View was the first regularly-scheduled phone-in talk show on WFMU. When it went on the air in 1989, calls came in from landlines or pay phones. Almost no one had a cellphone. Support Pioneering.
  2. Aerial View is live radio. It's happening in the moment, here and now. Support Spontaneity.
  3. Aerial View is a "Gateway Program". Every week new listeners find WFMU via Chris T. They hear an interesting topic and call in, usually asking, "What IS this?!" Support Discovery.
  4. Aerial View features a new intro every week. Chris T. puts a lot of work into how the show sounds and is always looking for new bytes and content. Support Innovation.
  5. Your voice gets heard on Aerial View. No one can hear you when you're just leaving comments online. All the emotion and information your voice can carry is heard here. Support Humanity.
  6. Aerial View is pure Talk Radio. WFMU is a music-centric place and pure talk radio is its illicit stepchild. Anyone who does talk radio here is swimming against the tide. Support Rebellion.
  7. Chris T. works without a net. Going on the air with an idea and spinning it into an hour of entertaining, informative and relevant radio is not easy. It's a high-wire act. Support Daring.
  8. Aerial View gets deeply strange at times. You never know when it might go down a rabbit hole. The odder, the better. Support Absurdity.
  9. Chris T. is experienced. He's been at this talk radio game long enough that he can handle anything that comes his way. Support Expertise.
  10. Aerial View is not a closed system. Though regular listeners are welcome, you don't have to be one to "get it". There's no "inside baseball" talk. Support Openness.
  11. Chris T. welcomes all viewpoints and opinions. Talk about whatever you'd like. Support Diversity.
  12. Aerial View removes stubborn stains. Just soak your clothes for one hour while listening to Aerial View and VOILA! Those stains are history. Support Cleanliness.
  13. Aerial View tackles an amazing range of topics. From light to heavy, in the last year alone, the show considered: weltschmerz, schadenfreude, hate and discontent, my DNA test, long-lost friend reunions, punk rock, Led Zeppelin karaoke AND I brought you special "Man on the Scene" shows from Times Square and Hollywood – to name just a few. Support Curiosity.

p-90 -- in the past i pledged over the course of the two weeks based on whether i wanted to win a prize. it was nerve wracking, that's why i just decide to do the whole thing at once. navasink is up along the delaware river and he listens on 90.1 no doubt.

P-90:

Why have they not allowed Mike judge to release a "director's cut" of Idiocracy? He famously disowned the movie because the studio insisted on cutting it to pieces. Its rep has become so huge even in that form, the "original" must be really something...
