William, do you remember this amazing episode of “All in the Family” where Archie and Meathead are stuck in the bar basement, and Archie talks about his childhood? “Well, I remember one winter during the Depression when we didn't have any money because my father lost his job, we was all bust. And I wore out a shoe. One shoe. So I couldn't go to school with only one shoe. But my mother found a boot, so I had a shoe on one foot there and a boot on the other. A shoe and a boot. So the kids call me 'Shoebootie'.” www.youtube.com...

I respectfully disagree about ultra-progressives not liking All in the Family etc...I consider myself pretty far left, and I like that show, and also am a big fan of Don Rickles. I think lots of lefties like All in the Family despite the display of racism and bigotry. I'm abhor racism but totally get the intent issue you guys were discussing.
  1:44am
Robert:

Didn't Jack E. Leonard do all the same jokes?
  1:46am
JakeGould:

@Jim: The people would like the show. The TV networks would never let the shows be made because they would be too afraid of pissing people off AND the sponsors wouldn’t sponsor it.
  1:46am
Jim:

ah, right, prob. wouldn't happen today...lots of great weird TV and movies in the 70s
  1:49am
JakeGould:

@Jim: And the thing in the 1970s, the amount of channels were so small so they would take chances. Yet we have a gajillion channels on TV now and nobody takes a risk because nobody wants to risk losing sponsorship. TV is market driven now, whereas before it was really just a bunch of folks saying, “Do you think this would work? Let’s try it out…” It’s like the record industry in a way…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51am
Ike:

A few channels still take a few chances here and there, like HBO letting John Oliver take hilarious potshots at various big corporations... but only because they DON'T HAVE ADS.
  1:53am
JakeGould:

Yeah, Ike. But the difference is you have to pay for HBO. Back before cable these shows existed and anyone anywhere could watch them. Far wider audience than John Oliver. And honestly I never found the morally outraged “liberal” behind the desk to be any better than the morally outraged “conservative” behind a desk. I watch those shows and wish back to the days of real variety talk shows; not just one talking head getting mad.

  2:08am
JakeGould:

@Jim: You are right to a point, but I have met some folks who bestow the concept of “racist” and “phobic” to so many things that are so relatively silly it’s a bit bast belief.

Good morning all!
I´m grumpy today, I did watch AMERICAN SNIPER tonight, I watched it without much expectations as I already had a low opinion of Eastwoods talents as a director, but this dreck totally went below the standards I expected: and I don´t have no problems with Eastwoods right-wing propaganda, as propaganda films have their own type of appeal. The problem here was the dumb way in wich everything was staged, like the hero and the villain, and the hero having trauma just until he shoots the bad guy and then gets better - AAARGHH!
So shit on him!

-Leia in her slave girl outfit
-the Emperor
-the (non-Special Edition) Sarlacc
-more Boba Fett
-let's face it, the Ewoks are nasty pieces of work with dead shark eyes (and Jar-Jar Binks makes the Ewoks look like Shaft, to quote Spaced)
