The Marathon: WFMU's Annual on-air Fundraiser w/ MC Trouble!

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Greetings dear listeners! I hope you can pledge tonight to support WFMU!

If you pledge to my show as usual I've made a custom conceptual world music cd for everyone who pledges $75 or more.

This year's custom cd is "Groovy Globe - World Music 1960s" - the first time I've ever put together a compilation of 60s tracks!

Swinging international '60s sounds: Ska, boogaloo, Tropicalia; psych and soul-tinged gems from Bollywood, Cambodia, Turkey, Ethiopia, South Africa and beyond!

Including this Macedonian Rom 60s classic from Esma:

Of course, if my cd doesn't float your boat you can choose a different DJ's premium (cd or otherwise) instead!

We hope you'll also consider joining our Swag For Life club (what mainstream public radio stations may refer to as a "sustaining" pledge). This means you pledge a certain amount to be charged to your credit card every month, and the pledge is renewed every year unless you opt to change it. As a thank-you, you'll get to choose new swag every year just the same as if you had made a one-time pledge. Making a Swag for Life or sustaining pledge is a beautiful thing, because it provides an economic foundation for the station year after year. If you have questions about "Swag for Life" or other fundraiser-related questions, see http://wfmu.org/marathon/faq.shtml

gramophone

If you do pledge $75 or more (or allocate $75 of a larger pledge to my show you'll be in the running for our Grand Prize! We're giving away the fabulous 4-cd box set Opika Pende: Africa at 78 RPM - 100 recordings from 1909 through the 1960s available on CD for the first time, which comes with a beautiful and informative 112 page book - courtesy of the excellent archive-oriented label Dust to Digital. But you must pledge $75 or more to Transpacific Sound Paradise by the end of tonight's show to have a chance to win! Just use the pledge box at the top of this page or pledge right here. Thanks so much!

Glad I finally tuned in to WFMU on a Saturday. Really digging this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm fred:

Opika Pende is a wonderful box set. Maybe less than you'd expect from dust to digital as far as information is concerned. But the music, words fail me
  6:19pm katie:

Hi from Michigan. Listening under the table at the reception.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm MD:

SOUNDS GREAT!!! THANK YOU ROB!!!!

AND YOU TOO TROUBLE!!!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Caryn is day and night when the marathon is underway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm fred:

I'm afraid this came out wrong: there's a lot on info in the book that comes with the records. But it also gives you an idea of how much was lost. This is a great set, pledge and get a chance to get it

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Rob:

Hi everyone, thanks for listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

Hey Rob, I got to adopt you!
  6:55pm Crissy:

Thank you Rob for curating an amazing progam every week. I love hearing your selections and I always learn something about our world.
  6:58pm Robert:

Eddie Giacomin was Italian, wasn't he?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Trouble:

you tell it crissy! rob is an amazing resource!!! we are all soooo lucky to have him!
  7:01pm Robert:

Seemed there were only so many good goalies to go around, and when the NHL expanded, it was like every good goalie had to cover 2 goals, so scores skyrocketed. Giacomin was one of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Rob W:

Yes, Eddie wasn't a great Francophone example - he's from Sudbury, Ontario! His family or at least dad's family via Italy I suppose...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm SeanG:

Viva Colombia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Ike:

That's because Sinner's Crossroads is one hour, right? Only hour-long shows can do that?
  7:43pm Tim:

yo rob. moscow here. good luck with the marathon!
  7:44pm Robert:

There've been lots of prerecorded 1-hr. shows on WFMU, although if I discern a recent trend, it's running toward less of that. The Alan Watts lectures ran & reran for years (guess what--I listened to them over & over; they were mostly very good), Dave Emory had his tapes air (& even sometimes rerun, including internal reruns, i.e. segments quoting himself), and in the 21st C. the station experimented with stuff produced originally for podcast elsewhere, and a kind of variety summer-replacement series, "Soundcheck" which included reruns of Jean Shepherd among others.
  7:48pm Robert:

Some of Clay Pigeon's best stuff IMO are his highly produced & edited hours, more of which he did early in his time at WFMU. It's odd that he says he's been there for only about a decade when ISTR his material from the 20th C., so maybe I'm mixing him up with someone else who was rather Firesign-like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Rob W:

We're always on the lookout for interesting one-hour live show ideas! But not opposed to produced shows either (like Clay Pigeon's in one way, or Andrea Silenzi's in a very different way.)
  7:53pm Robert:

They say there's something about doing it live, and apparently was so even before the playlists & comments. I used to listen to a weekly 1-hr. comedy program ("Post Serial") on WCWP, Brookville, and when their creative people became unavailable for it, I asked why they couldn't just literally mail it in. I was told that even though you'd never know it as a listener, the rxns they got via telephone were important.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Trouble:

get in the running for this cd!!! there is no one eligible right now!!!! gasp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Trouble:

one person is in the running for this incredible bombay cd!!! pledge peeps!
Avatar 7:56pm Slugsadist:

I lament that I have no money to give to you guys atm
Avatar 7:57pm Slugsadist:

These Bombay cuts are intoxicating.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Bas NL:

Hi Rob! I have been playing a lot of Bollywood this week.. Still my favorite is Dhak Dhak Karne Laga ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Ike:

@Slugsadist, you don't have to pay now. All phone pledges are billed later. Or pledge online and choose "bill me later."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Trouble:

true ike! you pledge now and can pay later: perfect!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Ken:

It's very hard for a phoned-in program to work. We're lucky that we have a few. I dont allow three hour shows to be phoned in, only one hours. I have a bias towards live shows for a few reasons: 1) They tend to sound live, 2) they result in far fewer errors due to operator and technical errors, 3) live shows buold a better internal community at FMU 4) phoned-in shows require a dedicated board operator. An there are more reasons too. That said, we have lots of great shows that originate elsewhere and also lots of great shows that are pre-recorded / produced or partially pre-recorded / produced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Ike:

Thanks Ken. I find all this inside-baseball FMU stuff fascinating. Much more fascinating than actual baseball.
  8:22pm em2:

Here, here! on that note, will there be a state of the station, or did I miss that already?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Ken:

No, probably wont be one this year, maybe I could do a web-only one on Doug's stream or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Ike:

I'd tune in for that.
  8:32pm G. Jacobs:

Our favorite show is prerecorded and the two shows we completely dislike are live. Clay is a mix of both live and taped and he is an undisputed master as far as I am concerned. I feel like creative peolpe can make it work either way.

Thank you Rob for this wonderful program.
Avatar 🌍 8:33pm slugluv1313:

@ Slugsadist -- i am broke too BUT i am getting tax money back -- so i am pledging to WFMU/Rob's show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Ike:

Which are youse guys' fave Lebanese joints in Paterson? I used to like Kamil's until they were letting people smoke inside there one time. Turns out that's legal in NJ under certain weird conditions. Gross! So we switched to Al Raouche. Also excellent food.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Ike:

Also: Weird energy blobs on the Turnpike?! Whaaaaat? Plus, congrats to Caryn a.k.a. Jenna!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Caryn:

Thanks, Ike! It's nice to occasionally get something. (I didn't dare try for the Bombay Disco for a 4th time...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

Please Ken, I really want a State of the Station!
  8:52pm tomasz.:

yo this Noura Mint Seymali is crucial, definitely pledge for that. also totally agree with Ike on the inside information stuff
  8:52pm tomasz.:

wait. WAIT. Caryn is Jenna? my mind is blown
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Caryn:

@tomasz: I'm blowing your mind like a weird blob of energy on the NJ Turnpike!
  8:54pm tomasz.:

you are a marathon hero, my friend. salute!
