"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Sean- this is possible. Just indicate that this is how you'd like to pay when you're bill. Joe McGasko can help you with the details on that.

I just realized they made it easier than it used to be to parcel out bits of your swag4life. Improvement much appreciated!

Listener Bryan (the Professor):

Now that I've parceled out my whole pledge for the year I'm in dangerous territory of being sucked in to pledge even more. I'm going to have to turn off the radio after this show.

If the dog is not showing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, taking it to the vet may not be absolutely vital. But to be on the safe side, you might want to give the dog lots of fiber (e.g. Metamucil) and vaseline with its food in order to help the fiberglass pass through the intestines more easily and safely. Alternatively, if the dog possibly ate the fiberglass just a little while ago, you could try to make the dog vomit using peroxide. I'd probably call the vet for advice, just to be sure.

If ppl are trying to make a decision about all the stuff in the prize warehouse, you can't do better than John Allen's Twisted Nerve 1977-1982 (2008). Seriously. Among the best of the best.

Woah, early 80s MTV flashback! I remember winning a copy of this album off a local radio station at the time. Not too impressed, but then saw a weird Planet P Project video and suspected Tony Carey was a bit more interesting than the album suggested.

I'm kind of confused about Nachum's role in WFMU. There's clearly a political agenda in his broadcasts (e.g. live from an extremist settlement in Hebron!) All other FMU output is non-political, but it's pretty obvious that Nachum's extreme-right Zionism isn't very compatible with the worldviews of most DJs and listeners. So why's he on the schedule? Presumably he brings in a lot of donations during this time - could the station survive without these? Is this a taboo subject here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22am
common:

Avatar 8:27am
Caryn:

@violet: there have been political talk-based shows on WFMU across the years. The idea seems to be that DJs are allowed to profess even extreme political views as long as they don't cross a line. Some DJs have crossed the line and been kicked off the schedule.
Avatar 8:32am
dk:

it seems to me that JM in the AM is on the schedule because he fits exactly in what seems like WFMU's mission: to provide a radio home for voices that aren't represented elsewhere, particularly when those voices can really ONLY work on radio. there's nothing else on radio like JM in the AM _anywhere_ in the world, and that's a statement you could make about pretty much everything on FMU. that, and the incredible diversity of those voices, is why FMU is so important.

if you don't get that, i don't actually see how you could get anything about FMU.
  8:33am
Ike:

For many yrs, JM in the AM raised over a third of each year's fundraising goal. Nobody wanted the 6-9 a.m. slot back in 1980. They figured why not let some Orthodox Jews try it?
  8:34am
Ike:

(Or at least that's my understanding of the schedule history.)
  8:34am
violet:

But would you be comfortable with a KKK advocate broadcasting 15 hours a week on your FM signal though? I'm guessing not.

I'm really not trying to stir up trouble here, just trying to understand how such extremist view can fit into this picture. He may get kids to sing on his show, but Nachum represents a racist pro-settlement agenda.

It's true I don't have to listen to JM in the AM because of your webstream, but when I hear a few seconds of the Israeli national anthem during the changeover I do feel confused and uncomfortable.

You guys couldn't have said it better. I have friends from both sides of political thought who love WFMU. Free form is apolitical and should remain so. Just play the music and stay creative!

violet, comparing JM in the AM to a hate group is extremely offensive. Nachum serves a huge community in the NY/NJ area and around the world which is lacking in other mass-media voices. the show might not align with your political views, but it's not preaching hate.

@violet: we had a DJ on evenings whose whole schtick involved insulting the listeners and ranting in an anti-Semitic manner, among other things. He was allowed to stay on the air until his behaviour became a bit too violent and troubling. WFMU's goal is to provide different types of shows and viewpoints the opportunity to express themselves. Nachum has every right to have Zionist views, Irwin has every right to be a free-market conservative, Ken has every right to talk about his visits to head shops. If I don't like a show, I don't listen to it.
  8:43am
violet:

@dk He support the colonisation of the West Bank, which is a racist agenda, however you look at it. He doesn't just vocally support it, he actually went and broadcast live from a settlement in Hebron. I assume you know what life is like for the Palestinian residents of that city and are familiar with the attitudes of the settlers there. If you aren't, check it out. I'll stop posting about this now, but no one's replies have convinced me that NS's pro-settlement propaganda fits WFMU's inclusive, freeform ethos.

- as a totally web-based listener, I'm not exposed to JM in the AM whatsoever. No problem there! If he's raising 1/3rd of the budget for the best music/culture/community station on earth - which is totally commercial-free, I'm grateful.
...I think most Americans are neither 100% pro nor anti-Israel - & altho' I don't know the JM program, I'd guess it's about a lot more than the settlement question or one view on it. My politics are pretty Leftist & I consider your point - but you just can't always get what you want. Also - no one is censoring you or even hating. That's good.
