Thanks for this. So far so awesome.

JakeGould:

FWIW, I can’t stop looking at the flashlight on that control console. The hands-on IT tech in me pictures a lot of “What the heck broke now?” moments with that hunk of plastic.

hey yo bros - sup?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Irene Trudel:

You know it, Jake! In every radio studio I've worked in there's a flashlight for those moments too.

What Monica said. (In truth, whatever Monica says.)

This is a more extensive tribute to Orrin Keepnews than the one that aired on WFMU a month ago. wfmu.org...

Thanks Irene! :)
Great show so far, Mongo Santamaria is a cool sound, and a cool name!

Was just listening to this on long drive Sunday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Irene Trudel:

Thanks Henry & Gaylord. And thanks Irwin for at least acknowledging Orrin on your program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Irwin:

"At least"? Peter wrote that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Irene Trudel:

No, I control the comments here! I didn't have the time to look at your playlist in depth. I'm kinda in the middle of something at the moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Irwin:

I must have 30 OK-produced CDs and LPs in my collection, but I figured that soon enough you and Peter would do a better retrospective. I was right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Gaylord Fields:

I played that very same Mongo 45 during a DJ gig at Teddy's Bar & Grill in Williamsburg just two weeks ago! (And that is the least I could do!)
  10:16pm
JakeGould:

Settle down jazzholes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

But of course! We'll barely get to a fraction of it all tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

Gaylord, are you on Facebook?

I remember Teddy's used to have some great wings...prolly still do.
GREAT show tonight Irene and Peter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

Those were my thoughts as well, Irwin, although I'll certainly keep featuring him as a regular aspect of my programming.

I heard Irwin's tribute at the time and enjoyed it. Moving stuff

@GaylordFields: I’m trying to think of a jazz joke with garlic in it, but drawing a blank. So at least you know what my retort might have been.

what a great group of commenters tonite. evening all.

JakeGould:

To be able to wrangle, deal with and produce the talent presented here… That takes a certain kind of mensch. Kudos to Orrin’s legacy!
Avatar 10:36pm

Well a "biography" by you guys would be fine, even if it's not "auto"! Go for it!

Hi, tuned in late... sounds great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

My condolences to you and your family. What a great thing to have so many points of reference to the man's life. Most of us just get family photos and anecdotes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Irene Trudel:

Yay Martha! Glad you're here. (Martha is Orrin's wife, listening in from California.)
Avatar 10:45pm

Hello Martha - glad you're enjoying the tribute!
  10:49pm

Will have to listen from the beginning <3
Avatar 10:50pm

I should refer my cousin to this episode, he loves Sonny Rollins and jazz of that era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Irwin:

Peter: Did the station at 89.9 do a tribute?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Irene Trudel:

As with all shows, they're archived so you can listen whenever you get the chance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Irene Trudel:

Irwin, I can answer that. We assume they did, but we didn't know for sure. We were in California with him when he passed and for the whole week following. I will mention that KCSM, the wonderful Bay Area Jazz station on 91.1 FM played tributes to Orrin throughout the week, which was very comforting to us. kcsm.org
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Irwin:

Bring Peter back next week and do Part 2.
Avatar 11:02pm

And Max Roach! What a trio.
Doug Schulkind has also played the "Freedom Suite" during sets with political and civil rights themes.

I just thought I'd mention that Dick Katz was a boyhood friend of my father's in Baltimore.

martha:

BTW, that photo of breakfast cracks me up because I know that Orrin was making his fake smile face!!! - and loved the Mark Murphy. Jimmy <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Irene Trudel:

Henry, that is so amazing, also considering that Dick's son Jamie and Peter both went to high school together. That's kind of how Orrin and Dick met.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Irene Trudel:

I know, Martha. You kind of said to Orrin, "can't you just smile for the camera?!"

Quite a show. Don't be shy about a follow-up show with more when you are up to it.

I'll add my vote for a Part II, if not next week, then soon. And thanks, Martha, for the tipoff on the fake smiley face...
