Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07am

Morning, Scott and listeners. @Scott: did you went to Argentina x Ecuador?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44am
Scott McDowell:

no I did not 2-1 I hear.
  6:48am

Yeah Ecuador played well against Argentina

Love the internet motherfucker!

the Canterbury wood-elf:

Hey everyone. Nice to hear that bit of Inherent Vice thrown in. Loved the book, loved the film, but didn't even realise that was Joanna Newsom until the credits rolled.

And thanks for playing the Go-Betweens too, Scott. Always welcome in these ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21am
Nasty Les:

@Canterbury - yeah, that track was great. Johnny Greenwood channeling Can. Also enjoyed the film a lot, although the person I saw it with (who hadn't read the book) said they were pretty baffled and basically didn't understand anything that had happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22am
Scott McDowell:

The film is totally disorienting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28am
Nasty Les:

@Scott - For sure. I did warn them not to expect any simple resolutions at the end. I wonder if anyone will try to make a film of 'Bleeding Edge'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

I have no idea what I'd have thought of Inherent Vice if I wasn't already a Pynchon freak. I might have enjoyed the disorientation. I suppose I'll never know (unless I suffer amnesia at some point in the future and see it again).

Bleeding Edge would be an interesting challenge for any filmmaker...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30am
Sem Chumbo:

Read Bleeding Age in February. A Pynchon fan on these boards, familiar with his entire output, found it the most accessible of all his work. Pretty dense going, I'd say.

Chris from DC:

Never heard Carsten Meinert. This is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33am
Scott McDowell:

I have read Lot 49 and started Gravity's Rainbow 12x. I did not read Inherent Vice but loved the movie, felt like a Pynchon book reads to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33am
Nasty Les:

@Sem - Yeah, I'd agree its probably his most accessible, but that doesn't say much in absolute terms about accessibility ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34am
Sem Chumbo:

@Nasty Les: yes, a relative thing, certainly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

I must admit, reading both Inherent Vice and Bleeding Edge after all his earlier works, I was initially disappointed at the accessibility levels (maybe just a kind of snobbish exclusionary instinct - just felt a bit lightweight), but before long was completely won over. TP has worked out how to achieve what he wants in a simpler, but no-less-effective way. Quite an achievement.

It sounds like you have a torn ACL, not an MCL. The ACL is on the inside and will need to be fixed. I tore both and know that pain on the inside, it sounds like it might be repairable - My needed replacement. Good luck+
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40am
Nasty Les:

@Canterbury - I agree. One thing I've always enjoyed about Pynchon, which came through as well in Bleeding Edge I think, is how well he understands and plays with scientific/mathematical/technical ideas - I don't think there's any writer who does that better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Absolutely. I've got a PhD in mathematics, so I can tell when an author is faking that kind of stuff. He can write about differential equations or the entropic aspects of number theory in a way which is both beautifully poetic and totally accurate! I can see why some people started to think "Thomas Pynchon" was the front for some kind of cabal of writers - no one person should be able to know all this stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02am
Nasty Les:

Yep, as a Particle Physicist I'd say the same thing. Not once have I read something and thought 'well, that's not quite right...'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

This Impulsive Machinations brings to mind Mike Ratledge's organ playing with Soft Machine (and, more recently, Toby McClaren's with Led Bib). Very cool, thanks Scott...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06am
Scott McDowell:

Great distorto organ sound, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06am
Mike East:

damn, I didn't even finish college. Hope I'm still welcome here. I did read Crying of Lot 49, which at the time, I thought I got, but in retrospect, I think I have no idea what that book was about. Looking forward to watching Inherent Vice, though I just dropped my netflix DVD plan, so it might be a while.
