Listener comments!

rw:

Good morning Jeff Conklin!

Can't stick around much longer but wanted to let you know that I listened to the archive of last week's Avant Ghetto on crappy laptop speakers tucked in the corner of a giant mostly empty room (think airplane hangar). It sounded fucking awesome!
Avatar 3:17am
Jeff Conklin:

Not the ideal conditions, but thanks, rw!

P-90:

ARC! -and hello to you too, DJ JC.

Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Jeff, and good morning. Along for the ride thru the ghetto.
I'll just slump down over here in the shotgun seat and stay out of sight.
  3:20am
P-90:

He sounds so much like Plant there... "I wanna love ya, i wanna love ya..."
Avatar 3:21am
Jeff Conklin:

Hey, fellas.
  3:25am
rw:

No, it sounded really great. Big echo-y room. Okay, I gotta split. Will hear the remainder sometime soon in some sort of room, or maybe a car. Good night all!

Ken From Hyde Park:

Neil's birthday is November 12. He'll be 70 this year.
  3:29am
P-90:

And long may you run, Neil!
Avatar 3:30am
Jeff Conklin:

Can't promise I'll play them, but feel free to throw out Neil requests...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33am
barrie:

Cool Neil theme! I would have requested Arc but you already got to it. How about the version of Cowgirl in the Sand from the Fillmore live record that was released 9 or 10 years ago? It's smokin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35am
Sem Chumbo:

I'm hearing "Lola" in this melody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Do you have "Sample And Hold"? It was on the Trans album.
  3:41am
P-90:

I second the Filmore "Cowgirl" suggestion. Or: Any cowgirl would do.
[comment rendered obsolete before posted-not the first time]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43am
barrie:

Whoa, this "Cowgirl" version is blurry and sleepy. I like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44am
barrie:

And repeating the same song over and over never seemed to bother other freeform DJs... *cough*Ken*cough*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53am
barrie:

I can also second "Sample and Hold." That is a funky funky song. Is Trans maybe the best Neil record? It's lovely.
  3:53am
DL in LA:

They are killing it. I had no idea Neal Young's band was so good.
  3:54am
P-90:

I was about to second "Sample and Hold" too!
  3:56am
P-90:

"Trans": undeniably a keystone in the canon. Has only seemed more important with each passing decade.
  3:58am
P-90:

"Cortez the Killer" worth a shot?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01am
barrie:

When I was a kid my dad had a lot of Neil in his record collection (which was a great collection). Once I heard "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere," esp Down by the River and Cowgirl, I was hooked. That forever guitar, two chords going on across the plains. So evocative!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02am
Sem Chumbo:

What a fine Neil hour, Jeff. Counterpoint to the morning's reading, and dampening the despair of flurries(?!) outside.
Avatar 4:04am
pierre:

Bonjour Jeff ! Glad to be here.

Just find the "Times fade away" album original pressing with lyric poster in it.
Second time I buy a record that I feel might be worth something in terms of collection.
  4:05am
P-90:

Was he really this evolved as a soloist in 1970?! Endlessly amazing.

Wonderin' studio version by Neil and the Shocking Pinks in early 80s great video.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15am

And I guess there's the "Dead Man" soundtrack. Neil's soundtrack work has been pretty great usually.

The Ducks? Great tracks tonight, all sorts of stuff I never heard.
  5:16am
P-90:

"Silver and Gold" was indeed one of those that sorta slipped by and didn't get the attention it deserved, like "Hawks & Doves."
Effusive thanks, JC, in Neil Heaven here this morning, a very nice surprise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19am
Sem Chumbo:

Ditto what P-90 expressed. Thanks ever so, Jeff.
  5:20am
JoeRay:

Will this show be archived? I've noticed when WFMU DJ's devote an entire show to one artist, , the show ends up not being archived. Great show Jeff!
Avatar 5:22am
Jeff Conklin:

I think it should be archived, but I'm the new guy, so I'm not sure! I'm really happy you guys like it, I wasn't sure how it would be received. Neil is one of four artists/bands I'd do this for....
  5:26am

thanks Jeff for this great surprise Neil show and all previous regular shows I've been listening to your show cause its on in the AM here in Dublin since we moved from JC,NJ to here in Sept. I used to be asleep...

I would take a day off for an all Beefheart show!

P-90:

I guess we won't have time for Jeff's commentary on the Pono Player. This time.
Avatar 5:44am
Jeff Conklin:

PONO may not be so well thought out but if it gets people thinking about how shit mp3s really are, it has done a good job.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49am

What a life Neil has had, where 3 hours only barely scratches the surface of his and his band's output... thanks for the show!
Avatar 5:53am
Jeff Conklin:

Thanks for hanging out, everybody. Have a great week and be good to somebody...
  5:53am
P-90:

I was very, very impressed that Neil stepped up, all the way back at the dawn of the CD age, to advocate for lossless consumer digital formats, before there even were any. Viva Neil! And kudos again to DJ Jeff, great show.
Now: who's gonna step up and do a 3-hour ASTRID Young show? Hm? Freeform gauntlet thrown!
Mwah ha-ha-ha-haaaa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56am
Sem Chumbo:

See ya, Jeff. Been A+ start to finish.

Neil "Top Forty" Young. When I was a kid it sounded at first like the actor Bruce Dern was singing this.

Feeling ill today - but all this Neil is good medicine. Thanks, Jeff. Looking forward to your all-GD special (MOTM > DS please!)
