Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm common:

nice again vp! hey kurt, all!
Avatar 3:05pm Mary Wing:

I <3 this song; please to leave the 45 in the studio for me?
  3:11pm Brendan:

Apparently the four freshmen added a 5th member:
Avatar 3:13pm Mary Wing:

I don't see today's animation, for some reason, is it NSFW?
Avatar 3:13pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hi everyone! thanks for stopping by.
Avatar 3:13pm Kurt Gottschalk:

bit of trouble with the animation, i'll try to get it up.
Avatar 3:14pm Mary Wing:

The html for the image source is incorrect, methinks.
  3:15pm Dean:

A gif link appears to be anchored to the Note: This playlist... statement.
  3:16pm JakeGould:

Hello! The GIF should be this, right? imgflip.com...
Avatar 3:16pm V Priceless:

Greetings, Starry One and friends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - anywhere you click on playlist you get this: imgflip.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Stepchild:

This is nice
  3:17pm JakeGould:

And hello everyone!
  3:19pm Dean:

I know, it's a puzzle! It's all a gif! Pananimation!

[Apologies for this exhibition of profound disrespect toward Gubaidulina's depiction of crucifixion.]
Avatar 3:21pm Mary Wing:

May I fix it for you, Kurt?
  3:23pm JakeGould:

I say let Mary fix the GIF!
Avatar 3:23pm Kurt Gottschalk:

mary, you can you? i'll get it.
Avatar 3:24pm Mary Wing:

Avatar 3:24pm V Priceless:

ahhh...thanx Mary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Ken From Hyde Park:

It wouldn't be Friday afternoon without an animated GIF bouncing along. I feel much better now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm common:

there 'tis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I been thinking how I miss the Bethany 440 program for this sort of thing...
  3:30pm Dean:

Had to look up "Bethany 440," not realizing it's a reference to a former WFMU slot. What a series of playlists! I thought you might be referring to a live concert series, Rabbit, which made me recall LA's Green Umbrella series, which was spectacular.
Avatar 3:33pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

One of our students said/thought that the founder of Burger King just died. Had to clarify. B.B. King.
  3:38pm Dean:

In your student's defense, B.B. King did own a restaurant that serves burgers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm common:

this is quite nice
  3:44pm Thrill is Gone:

The Whopper Sr.
  3:46pm Beathaven:

I hope she is playing that with her forehead. At least, I imagine it that way.
  3:48pm Dean:

I wish Schroeder would take on Sorabji's works. Her Feldman stuff is gorgeous.
Avatar 3:53pm V Priceless:

@ Green Mountain Man Mark: I'd say that student needs to play some serious 'ketchup' with pop culture.
  3:54pm Dean:

Let 'em have it their way.
  4:02pm Remington Social Media Outreach:

Have you tried the new Lady Remington cordless electric razor? It's smooth, quiet operation makes it the choice of the active and appearance-aware. Isn't it time you made the switch to Lady Remington? 1-800-THE-LADY - Call Now!
Avatar 4:09pm Kurt Gottschalk:

sorry, hi everyone, been distracted in here. mary, thanks for the fix and sorry, that 45 is permanent collection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Sounds like someone's daring Kurt to call 1-800-THE-LADY and put the robo-voice on the air.
  4:13pm Dean:

Two words: misplaced apostrophe.
Avatar 4:18pm Mary Wing:

Call Lady Remington, she's SO LONELY.
  4:23pm Dean:

She should earn the confidence of Lady Speed's Dick.
Avatar 4:25pm TDK60:

I miss Bethany too, but Kurt is here to play the longhair sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm common:

great! this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Webhamster Henry:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Carmichael:

Yo, Friday peeps. Howzit, Kurt? Brendan, fine reference to the 5 Neat Guys. I have all their stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Webhamster Henry:

You know, my band Mamalama has a song about Sedna too.
Avatar 4:54pm Jeff:

I was trying to remember where I'd heard "Tundra Songs" - if maybe you'd played this before.

Had to go to the playlist search for the answer: Ken!
  4:57pm P-90:

Greetings Kurt and all, joining late. Looks like I missed a lot of cool shit.
Avatar 4:58pm Kurt Gottschalk:

there's always the archives, p-90. there's also always at least one other show on wfmu at the time you want to listen to the archives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Gonna go grab grub at Jones. Thanks for tunes, Kurt!
Avatar 5:01pm Kurt Gottschalk:

brilliant, i just got a prerecorded call here in the studio.
Avatar 5:03pm Jeff:

Good small-group string playing gets my blood going. It's irresistibly exciting.
  5:06pm P-90:

"Tundra Songs" kicks ass. Like Jeff above, I also know I've heard it before. Maybe it WAS on Ken's little programme...
  5:07pm P-90:

@ Jeff: Agreed! was just thinking the same thing about small-string-ensemble music.
  5:09pm Dean:

The cover of this album features the same photograph as Jim Hall & Bill Evans' Undercurrent.
Avatar 5:09pm Kurt Gottschalk:

ha! that's interesting.
  5:11pm Dean:

First time I've heard this piece. Did Beethoven and Samuel Barber co-write it?
Avatar 5:13pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar 5:14pm Video Booth:

I love kronus!
Avatar 5:16pm Kurt Gottschalk:

they're amazing. i just heard them play the other night.
  5:16pm Dean:

Amazing, because at no time in history were any of the three co-composers alive together. But then that simply reinforces how Laurence Sterne could have co-authored "Ulysses" with James Joyce.
  5:19pm Dean:

Really, Golijov is riffing on the Thanksgiving adagio from Beethoven's op. 132.

  5:26pm cory:

loving today's show. thanks
  5:27pm Dean:

Correct non-use of the apostrophe. Bravo!
Avatar 5:28pm Marcel M:

There is a sport razor landscape?
  5:29pm Dean:

Let's hope the landscape is unpopulated. They're launching razors, after all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Carmichael:

I saw Kronos many years ago and thought they were great. And I just saw that small string quartet Ethyl, appearing with Todd R. Very eclectic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm common:

razors launchings? i think i had a dream about that this morn. not so pleasant.
Avatar 5:31pm V Priceless:

Four words: Great Balls O' Comfort!
  5:33pm Schick Media Outreach:

Schick acknowledges the apostrophe error committed earlier. That employee has been reprimanded and has been replaced with a younger, more efficient social media expert. Thanks for noticing and happy shaving. Learn how you can have your own Schick-sanctioned sport razor launch party by calling now ... 1-800-ILAUNCH.
Avatar 5:34pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hey, if ira glass says npr is ready to start taking commercials then i think the wfmu playlists can do the same!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm common:

i'd like to advertise for my new line of electronic underwear...if it's ok with you, kurt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I'm just now tuning in but I love that you started off with Dionne!
Avatar 5:36pm Kurt Gottschalk:

go for it, common. welcome, bronwyn - don't mind common.
  5:37pm Clay Schickley:

Anyone see Scharpling and Wurster on Seth Meyers last night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm common:

we're almost ready to launch and drop and move forward and all that shit...soon.
Avatar 5:38pm V Priceless:

I recall seeing Bowie employ the Kronos Quartet as the launch point to his show, a while back...
Avatar 5:39pm Kurt Gottschalk:

really? interesting. what did they do?
  5:39pm Dean:

I wonder how much PMD Peter Gabriel listened to before that second Genesis album...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm common:

bowie, eh...vp?
Avatar 5:41pm V Priceless:

(there's your daily shot of f-in' Bowie, common!)

I think they may have played "Purple Haze", actually.
Avatar 5:41pm V Priceless:

@ Dean: haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm common:

thank you vp! i was waiting.
Avatar 5:42pm V Priceless:

: )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Man this piece is really something.
Avatar 5:45pm V Priceless:

@ Dean: if someone utters "a flower?" in this PMD piece, I'm hanging up my cleats...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Carmichael:

Yes, I saw them play Purple Haze. Must be one of their concert standards. It was a crowd pleaser.
Avatar 5:47pm Marcel M:

Oh noooo!!!
  5:49pm Dean:

@VP: Next up, Peter Maxwell Davies' "Willow Farm."

KQ's "Purple Haze" is on their album with Sculthorpe et al. When I heard them back in the day, they'd encore with a medley of TV show theme songs ("I Love Lucy," etc.).
Avatar 5:50pm MikeY:

  5:50pm P-90:

oh, that wasn't part of the piece?
  5:51pm Dean:

Check that CD, Kurt. Ten-to-one it's a PDO disk from pre-1993 or so. Those Unicorn disks were among the ones defectively manufactured by PDO. They bronze to death. I replaced a huge number of PDO disks back in the '90s. I'd report the titles to PDO and they'd send a good replacement.
Avatar 5:51pm Mary Wing:

For one moment, I thought VPriceless said Kronos played Purple Rain, ha!
Avatar 5:51pm V Priceless:

Eight Songs for a Mad King and A Disgruntled CD Player
  5:52pm i k e:

Aw CRAP, I can't make it to Rev. Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Choir tonight at 7 at Monty Hall! I really wanted to go to that. :( it's free, everybody else GO! Go now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Carmichael:

Kurt would pay any amount of money for that recording, Mary. :)
  5:52pm Dean:

Er, maybe it is the player. Is there a Yasunao Tone in the house?

Avatar 5:53pm Jeff:

Probably delamination. Or aluminum oxidation allowed by delamination.

Or just the end of the world,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Carmichael:

It's the 4 Freshman muting circuit.
  5:54pm P-90:

I don't see planes falling, but my toes sure are tingling. Is that a sign?
  5:55pm Dr. X:

Scoff taught me that reversing the polarity is the solution to all problems.
Avatar 5:55pm V Priceless:

reverse coriolis effect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Carmichael:

Is that what your gif is displaying, V?
  5:57pm Dean:

@Jeff: Right, it's oxidation (probably). Philips & Dupont Optical were the culprits. They pressed a crapload of Hyperion disks during that time, too. Lost a bunch of them. But props to them for making good on replacements!
Avatar 5:58pm V Priceless:

something along those lines, Carm...I think!
Avatar 5:59pm V Priceless:

thanks, KG!
