This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hi Melinda! Balimba for Melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
melinda:

Thanks! Now I have to google balimba...
Avatar 7:20pm
Flash Strap:

Well, let us know what you discover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
melinda:

It appears to be a surname.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Doug Schulkind:

Do they have surnames in Suriname? Sure!
Avatar 7:27pm
Flash Strap:

Oh, Douglas, you pun chand judy show, you
  7:31pm
Dean:

Is Nakara from Malawi? Google Translate identifies "balimba" as a Chichewa word (but translates it as "balimba" in English, thank you very much, Google Translate). A real Chichewa/English dictionary has no entry for the word, *but* it does include "limbalimba," which means "shake oneself free."

northguineahills:

It's where my voice activated app came from, but, I believe they speak pigeon Dutch in Paramaribo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
melinda:

Dean that last bit makes the most sense. It would be funny if they were singing a surname. But unlikely.
Avatar 7:34pm
Flash Strap:

I have no idea; that's a mysterious little record as far as I'm concerned, and I don't even know if it's properly "Library" to be honest
Avatar 7:36pm
northguineahills:

Why does Nino Nardini sound familiar?
  7:39pm
Dean:

Geez, and all this time I thought "library music" was supposed to be played extremely quietly.
Avatar 7:40pm
Walking Daydream:

Oh, life got busy and I actually forgot you owe me an email. You know, a good exotica mix name would be "Everybody Knows This Is Somewhere." Play on Neil Young.
Avatar 7:48pm
Flash Strap:

NGH: Nino Nardini, who often works with Roger Roger (notably on Jungle Obsession) is a frequently-encountered name in library circles and the subject of a recent Explorers Room, which may be why he sounds familiar
Avatar 7:50pm
Flash Strap:

Dean: You were right. You better be playing this show whisper-quiet, buddy.
Avatar 7:50pm
Flash Strap:

WD: thanks for forgetting, now it'll be a surprise when I finally remember
Avatar 7:52pm
northguineahills:

Thanks Flash, I swear I have a record by Nardini, but I'd have to do some sleuthing, as I suppose I didn't file it by his last name.
Avatar 7:53pm
Flash Strap:

ooh, I wonder which one!

Avatar 8:01pm
northguineahills:

I'm very meticulous in alphabeticalizing my recs (unlike everything else in my life), but comps, library recs, and artist collaborations throw a wrench in my air-tight system. The wife has forbidden me from buying recs for four years now (unless me move outside NYC) except for live shows. I think she'll also put a moratorium on books as well soon... no room.
Avatar 8:03pm
Flash Strap:

oh man, that's a bad place to be. that's a big reason why I stay out of restrictive-space areas. the downside being that I am in St. Louis, I guess
  8:04pm
Dean:

I'm a librarian, ngh, and I file my books alphabetically by size (meaning, they go where I can fit 'em). Records by genre, then artist name, title if a comp. Where the compilation features one artist/composer (say, Baroque stuff with mostly Bach), it goes under the name of the best represented artist/composer. And then there are the Miscellany sections...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
SeanG:

great tunes!
Avatar 8:08pm
hyde:

ooh, safari music and a discussion on where to file compilations. this must be heaven.
Avatar 8:10pm
northguineahills:

In college, I worked as a librarian until my senior year. I have all of my records in total alphabetical order, as I don't know how to discern genres. When I djed a lot, it did make picking out recs really time consuming, depending on the boundaries determined by the curator, except for the rare time I could play whatever.
Avatar 8:11pm
Flash Strap:

Hey Hyde and Sean G.!
Avatar 8:12pm
hyde:

for the record, i fall into the camp of filing them by title. but it does make them tough to find sometimes. my gf (even though we've been living together for 20+ years, we've never dared to interfile our dual voluminous lp collections) goes with keeping them all separate. it kind of philosophically bothers me (i too have an mls) but i can't deny that it enhances findability.
Avatar 8:16pm
Flash Strap:

I file them by genre, along emotion/history-based organizational principles. I seem to be the only one able to navigate it

Avatar 8:43pm
Flash Strap:

whatever feels right for you, man. You can also call me just Flash, if you're feeling pseudonymous but don't want to reach for the Strap. Most humans in the world just call me Evan, most people on the internet call me Flash, which is weird when I think about it. I'm... Flash?

What is a flash strap?
Avatar 8:47pm
Flash Strap:

I ask myself that every day WD.

How am I not myself?
Avatar 8:48pm

Maybe a flash strap is like the ammo of a toy cap gun. That roll of paper with little dots of magnesium or whatever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
coelacanth:

i just didn't want to be presumptuous!
so,i'll likely go back n forth-knowing me....but,of course what you say isn't so weird to one who's known by nearly everyone on the internet as "coelacanth"!

@melinda agreed! Libaek is very cool.

thanks for the show, Flash!
Avatar 9:13pm

thanks for listening, Hyde!

And Melinda: I look forward to playing some great Libaek for you. I'll do a Libaek show, then follow it up with a more general Australian jazz show
Avatar 9:16pm

This one almost sounds like an instrumental from Smile, but with an alien animal crying in the foreground. I keep waiting for it to segue into, I don't know, Child is the Father of the Man or something
